Book The Bluejacket s Manual

  • Publisher : Naval Institute Press
  • Release : 2017-11-15

  • Pages : 563 pages

Download or read book The Bluejacket s Manual written by Thomas J. Cutler and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the days of oars and coal-fired engines to the computerized era of the 21st century, The Bluejacket’s Manual has been an essential part of the American Sailor’s sea bag for over one hundred years, serving as an introduction to the Navy for new recruits and as a reference book for Sailors of all ranks. Written by a Sailor whose decades of naval service included sea duty in patrol craft, destroyers, cruisers, and aircraft carriers as both an officer and a “white hat,” this newest edition has been overhauled to reflect the current state of the ever-evolving United States Navy and includes chapters on ships and aircraft, uniforms, weapons, damage control, communications, naval customs and ceremonies, security, leadership, pay and benefits, naval missions, military fundamentals, and seamanship. Since Lieutenant Ridley McLean wrote the first edition of this perennial classic, the Navy has grown from fledgling sea power to master of the world’s oceans, and both technology and American culture have changed in ways probably unimaginable in his day. Although The Bluejacket’s Manual has necessarily evolved (through more than twenty revisions) to reflect those changes, its original purpose has remained steadfastly on course. Like its predecessors, this new edition makes no attempt to be a comprehensive textbook on all things naval—to do so today would require a multivolume set that would defy practicality—but it continues to serve two very important purposes. First, it serves as a primer that introduces new recruits to their Navy and helps them make the transition from civilian to Sailor. Second, it serves as a handy reference that Sailors can rely on as a ready source of basic information as they continue their service, whether for only one “hitch” or for an entire career. To that end, this 25th edition has been reorganized to more efficiently reflect those dual purposes, with the first part of the book consisting of “Chapters” that provide introductions and basic explanations that Sailors new to the Navy will find most helpful, and the second part consisting of “Tabs” that deal with specifics—often mere tables—that seasoned Sailors will find useful for reference purposes. Also unique to this latest edition has been the creation of an accompanying website that will serve to keep the book current and provide valuable supplementary material. In total, this latest edition of a recognized Navy classic continues to serve today’s “Bluejackets” and “Old Salts” in the traditional manner while providing a fresh approach that will be welcomed by potential recruits, Navy buffs, and a growing number of Bluejacket Manual collectors.

Book Shiphandling Fundamentals for Littoral Combat Ships and the New Frigates

Download or read book Shiphandling Fundamentals for Littoral Combat Ships and the New Frigates written by Joseph A. Gagliano and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shiphandling Fundamentals for Littoral Combat Ships and the New Frigates is the first authoritative book on the theory and practice of driving U.S. Navy waterjet ships, originally known as "Littoral Combat Ships" (LCS). Authored by a career shipdriver who was part of the first generation of LCS commanding officers, every method presented within these pages has been validated through the successful development of experienced LCS shiphandlers, including ensigns, department heads, and even commanding officers. Though it is based on shiphandling theory, this book is meant to be a practical guide for both novice shiphandlers and those already experienced on propeller-driven ships. Gagliano's work serves as a book of best practices, offering advice to maximize training opportunities in the simulator and to exercise complete control over the ship with waterjets. This book is the definitive guide for any shiphandler assigned to one of the Navy's new frigates.

Book NavCivGuide

  • Author : Thomas J Cutler
  • Publisher : Naval Institute Press
  • Release : 2008-09-01
  • ISBN : 1612510191
  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book NavCivGuide written by Thomas J Cutler and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of the U.S. Navy in its more than two centuries of existence is due not only to the essential contributions of Sailors on active duty and in the reserve, but to the civilians who have worked as part of the Navy since its earliest days. But active and reserve Sailors go to boot camp or officer candidate school to prepare them for their new (unique) occupation. And the Navy has long provided The Bluejacket’s Manual to incoming Sailors to serve as an introduction and as a continuing reference so that they will feel more comfortable in a new and otherwise alien world, where floors suddenly become decks, where 1337 is a time in the here-and-now instead of a date from ancient history, and where uniforms are anything but! While it is impractical to send all civilian workers to a centralized indoctrination course, it is possible to provide a common reference, specially designed to acquaint civilians with this very special world they have entered. This book is that common reference guide designed specifically for those civilians, who like the Sailors in the Fleet, serve the nation and the Navy, and who need help in understanding where they are and what it is all about. All organizations and occupations have their own idiosyncrasies, and a big step toward “fitting in” has always been learning how to “talk the talk and walk the walk.” Like The Bluejacket’s Manual, this guide provides the words and steps needed to serve as an introduction for new employees and as a ready reference for veteran workers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing popularity of water jet-propelled vessels both in the civilian and military sectors of the maritime industry has outpaced the commonly available and approachable books on these ships. Many mariners who operate these styles of vessels have received training in their operation from vessel-specific instruction. This has left a knowledge gap between the various different vessel types in what works and what does not. Inside are descriptions and pictures of the various parts of water jet propulsion and control systems. Also included are explanations and suggestions on how to make full use of the remarkable maneuvering potential that water jet propulsion offers, followed by an explanation of how to efficiently and safely make use of the higher speeds that water jet vessels can obtain. Last, there is an extensive glossary of terms typically used in the community of high-speed water jets.

Book The Citizen s Guide to the U S Navy

Download or read book The Citizen s Guide to the U S Navy written by Thomas J Cutler and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2012-04-15 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s Navy is a massive and complex organization, with hundreds of ships, thousands of aircraft, hundreds of thousands of people, and an annual budget in the billions of dollars that make the U.S. Navy a powerful and important component of the American defense establishment, playing a vital role in maintaining our national security, protecting us against our enemies in time of war, and guarding our economic lifelines and supporting our foreign policy in peacetime. Despite its obvious importance, most Americans know very little about their Navy, and learning about it has been a daunting task. Until now. Derived from another Naval Institute Press book by the same author, NavCivGuide: A Handbook for Civilians in the United States Navy (which is used by civilians who work for the Department of the Navy), this informative book is a highly accessible guide that explains the strange ways of the Navy in terms that non-Sailors can understand. In ten short chapters, the author reveals such things as the many titles that military people have, the various alphanumeric designations that military personnel use to identify and distinguish themselves, the organization of the Navy and the Department of Defense, the origins and practices of such things as saluting, flag etiquette, side boys, and odd language (such as “aye-aye”), and an explanation of the many missions of the Navy. Also included is an introduction to the Navy’s colorful history, a primer on the various ships and aircraft that make up today’s fleet, a guide to “reading” a uniform, and the demystification of such things as the phonetic alphabet and military time. Designed to be an easy read for those who want the whole story, The Citizen’s Guide to the Navy is also a useful reference work. Each chapter ends with a section called “QuickRefs,” which are lists of the essential facts presented in the chapter itself. While not everyone need be an expert on the Navy, there is a middle ground that this book serves by providing a readable, edifying, and often entertaining explanation of this important but sometimes mysterious branch of the U.S. armed forces.
