Book The Spanish American War Historical Overview and Select Bibliography

Download or read book The Spanish American War Historical Overview and Select Bibliography written by Michael Crawford and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 1998-08-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this publication is to encourage understanding and further study of the naval aspects of the Spanish-American War. Study of the sea services in this conflict is especially important because of the central role the Navy played in nearly every aspect of the war from logistics to diplomacy. American planners and leaders anticipated that the fight with Spain would be primarily a naval war. The U.S. Navy's victories at Manila Bay and Santiago de Cuba were pivotal events that turned the course of the war and America's future. Joint Army-Navy operations at Santiago, Puerto Rico, and Manila sealed the success won by the U.S. Navy's command of the seas. Naval History Bibliographies, No. 5., Naval Historical Center.

Book The Spanish American War

Download or read book The Spanish American War written by Pascual Cervera y Topete and published by . This book was released on 1899 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Cortes at Madrid, on the 30th day of October, 1899, the minister of war was requested by the Count de Las Almenas and Senators González and Dávila to transmit to the senate chamber as early as possible the proceedings held in the supreme council of war and navy, from August 1, 1899, to date, relative to the wars in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. The minister of war, replying, said in part: "I do not know whether the Count de las Almenas and the worthy companions whom he represents have sufficiently considered the grave step of bringing into a political chamber and submitting to parliamentary discussion adjudged causes of the extreme gravity of those referred to. I repeat that, while I greatly respect such right, I believe that there may be serious objections to a debate of this nature, because perhaps the high tribunal of the army and navy, which has adjudged these causes in accordance with law and its own conscience, and to whose functions and importance great respect is due, might suffer, though only apparently, in its prestige. For that reason I consider it neither expedient nor prudent to transmit to the chamber the documents asked for." It is not, therefore, probable that the proceedings of the courts in the cases of Admirals Cervera and Montojo will be made public. Admiral Cervera, having in view the vindication of himself, had obtained from the Queen in August permission to publish certain documents, given in this number of the War Notes, which make a most interesting and connected history of the naval operations of Spain during the war, and show without need of argument the causes of her weakness. Richardson Clover, Commander, U.S.N., Chief of Intelligence Officer, Navy Department, December 6, 1899.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish-American War of 1898 is often passed over by scholars and history buffs, but the approach of the centennial has generated a renewed interest in this conflict - its causes, consequences, and conduct - an area surprisingly lacking in study until now. This collection of essays by some of the nation's top naval and military historians - David F. Trask, Graham A. Cosmas, Harold D. Langley, and Jack Shulimson, to name a few - examines for the first time the actions of America's naval, military, and diplomatic communities during the war, actions that led to victory against Spain, the U.S. domination of the Philippines, and transformation of the United States into a world power. Drawing from primary sources, this book sheds new perspectives on the negotiations and diplomatic maneuvers preceding the war, and explores the boom in intelligence gathering by the United States. It explains how this new intelligence influenced the formation of military strategy and how the joint operations between the Army and Navy were carried out - and how effective they were. It examines the impact of the Marine Corps on the war and how this conflict changed the Corps itself. Crucible of Empire takes a fresh look at the controversial Battle of Santiago from the points of view of Commodores Sampson and Schley, and discusses numerous command problems and disagreements. Also considered are the expansionist designs of President McKinley, the taking of the Philippine Islands, and the resulting impact on the strategic planning, naval service, and defense responsibility of the United States beyond the Western Hemisphere. This volume contributes to the ongoing re-interpretation of this pivotal era of Americanhistory. Together the essays trace not only the impact of the armed forces on America's rise to world prominence, but also the transformation of the Navy, Army, and Marines as they entered the modern era.

Download or read book Manila and Santiago written by Jim Leeke and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2013-07-10 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Navy's first two-ocean war was the Spanish-American War of 1898. A war that was global in scope, with the decisive naval battles of war at Manila Bay and Santiago de Cuba separated by two months and over ten thousand miles. During these battles in this quick, modern war, America s New Steel Navy came of age. While the American commanders sailed to war with a technologically advanced fleet, it was the lessons they had learned from Adm. David Farragut in the Civil War that prepared them for victory over the Spaniards. This history of the U.S. Navy s operations in the war provides some memorable portraits of the colorful officers who decided the outcome of these battles: Shang Dewey in the Philippines and Fighting Bob Evans off southern Cuba; Jack Philip conning the Texas and Constructor Hobson scuttling the Merrimac; Clark of the Oregon pushing his battleship around South America; and Adm. William Sampson and Commodore Scott Schley ending their careers in controversy. These officers sailed into battle with a navy of middle-aged lieutenants and overworked bluejackets, along with green naval militiamen. They were accompanied by numerous onboard correspondents, who documented the war.In addition to descriptions of the men who fought or witnessed the pivotal battles on the American side, the book offers sympathetic portraits of several Spanish officers, the Dons for whom American sailors held little personal enmity. Admirals Patricio Montojo and Pasqual Cervera, doomed to sacrifice their forces for the pride of a dying empire, receive particular attention. The first study of the Spanish-American War to be published in many years, this book takes a journalistic approach to the subject, making the conflict and the people involved relevant to today s readers. This work details a war in which victory was determined as much by leadership as by the technology of the American Steel Navy.
