Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Administration and Warfare: Some General Principles; With Other Essays As the common proverb has it, the wood often can not be seen for the trees. Few persons, probably, have escaped the de spairing sense of inability to find on a map some particular place, because of the thicket of names spread over the surface, like the tanglewood of a forest. Fewer still have been happy enough to look at a map intelligently constructed for the special purpose of showing no more than is needed for the understanding of the subject Which the map is intended to illustrate; but those Who have had this experience Will recognize that the advan tage is not only that of finding readily a feature, the position of Which is approximately known, but also the ease With Which can be appreciated the relations of the several parts to one another, and to the Whole. The composite effect, When thus obtained for the first time, is illuminative almost to the point of revelation. Book Mahan Corbett and the Foundations of Naval Strategic Thought

Download or read book Mahan Corbett and the Foundations of Naval Strategic Thought written by Kevin D McCranie and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the twentieth century, Alfred Thayer Mahan and Julian Stafford Corbett emerged as foundational thinkers on naval strategy and maritime power. Important in their lifetimes, their writings remain relevant in the contemporary environment. The significance of Corbett and Mahan to modern naval strategy seems beyond question, but too often their theories are simplified or used without a real understanding of their fundamental bases.Labeling a strategy, operation, or even a navy “Mahanian” or “Corbettian” tells very little. Mahan, Corbett, and the Foundations of Naval Strategic Thought provides an in-depth introduction and a means to stimulate discussion about the theories of Mahan and Corbett. Although there is no substitute for opening the actual writings of Mahan and Corbett, this requires time, not just to read but most importantly to understand how states exploit the sea in the strategic sense. Mahan, Corbett, and the Foundations of Naval Strategic Thought takes the reader from their grand strategic foundations of sea power and maritime strategy, through their ideas about naval warfare and strategy, to how Mahan and Corbett thought a navy should integrate with other instruments of national power, and finally, to how they thought states with powerful navies win wars. This window into naval strategy provides twenty-first-century readers an understanding of what navies can and perhaps more importantly cannot do in the international environment.

Download or read book Militarism in a Global Age written by Dirk Bönker and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the twentieth century, the United States and Germany emerged as the two most rapidly developing industrial nation-states of the Atlantic world. The elites and intelligentsias of both countries staked out claims to dominance in the twentieth century. In Militarism in a Global Age, Dirk Bonker explores the far-reaching ambitions of naval officers before World War I as they advanced navalism, a particular brand of modern militarism that stressed the paramount importance of sea power as a historical determinant. Aspiring to make their own countries into self-reliant world powers in an age of global empire and commerce, officers viewed the causes of the industrial nation, global influence, elite rule, and naval power as inseparable. Characterized by both transnational exchanges and national competition, the new maritime militarism was technocratic in its impulses; its makers cast themselves as members of a professional elite that served the nation with its expert knowledge of maritime and global affairs. American and German navalist projects differed less in their principal features than in their eventual trajectories. Over time, the pursuits of these projects channeled the two naval elites in different directions as they developed contrasting outlooks on their bids for world power and maritime force. Combining comparative history with transnational and global history, Militarism in a Global Age challenges traditional, exceptionalist assumptions about militarism and national identity in Germany and the United States in its exploration of empire and geopolitics, warfare and military-operational imaginations, state formation and national governance, and expertise and professionalism.

Download or read book The Atlantic Realists written by Matthew Specter and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Atlantic Realists, intellectual historian Matthew Specter offers a boldly revisionist interpretation of "realism," a prevalent stance in post-WWII US foreign policy and public discourse and the dominant international relations theory during the Cold War. Challenging the common view of realism as a set of universally binding truths about international affairs, Specter argues that its major features emerged from a century-long dialogue between American and German intellectuals beginning in the late nineteenth century. Specter uncovers an "Atlantic realist" tradition of reflection on the prerogatives of empire and the nature of power politics conditioned by fin de siècle imperial competition, two world wars, the Holocaust, and the Cold War. Focusing on key figures in the evolution of realist thought, including Carl Schmitt, Hans Morgenthau, and Wilhelm Grewe, this book traces the development of the realist worldview over a century, dismantling myths about the national interest, Realpolitik, and the "art" of statesmanship.

Book The Monroe Doctrine and United States National Security in the Early Twentieth Century

Download or read book The Monroe Doctrine and United States National Security in the Early Twentieth Century written by Alex Bryne and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates that during the early twentieth century, the Monroe Doctrine served the role of a national security framework that justified new directions in United States foreign relations when the nation emerged as one of the world’s leading imperial powers. As the United States’ overseas empire expanded in the wake of the Spanish-American War, the nation’s decision-makers engaged in a protracted debate over the meaning and application of the doctrine, aligning it to two antithetical core values simultaneously: regional hegemony in the Western Hemisphere on the one hand, and Pan-Americanism on the other. The doctrine’s fractured meaning reflected the divisions that existed among domestic perceptions of the nation’s new role on the world stage and directed the nation’s approach to key historical events such as the acquisition of the Philippines, the Mexican Revolution, the construction of the Panama Canal, the First World War, and the debate over the League of Nations.
