Book Nature Study and Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nature Study and Agriculture Classic Reprint written by Charles C. Schmidt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Study and Agriculture The chapters are not all designed for use in the same grade. While most of the book is suited to young and old alike, such subjects as plant diseases, soils, and farm management are of interest only to the maturer pupils, and they are therefore treated somewhat more technically. It has long been the belief of the author that the beginning in the study of Agriculture should be made in Nature Study, in which is trained the power to see things in our physical environment as they actually are and to draw proper conclusions from them, and in which the learner acquires a good store of first-hand knowledge of plants and animals and other natural phenomena. In this book we make no attempt to draw an arbitrary dividing line between Nature Study and Agriculture. We shun the sentimental and essentially urban type of Nature Study that we have so often seen, and View Nature from the practical stand point oi those who live in actual contact with it. The aim has been to treat chiefly the topics whose study may yield knowledge of economic value. These may all be considered as belonging to a course in Agri culture. On the other hand, of the more technical subjects generally included in the comprehensive texts on general Agriculture designed for use in high schools, we present only those more essential ones usually prescribed in the modern courses of study for our common schools. Book Nature Study Agriculture

Download or read book Nature Study Agriculture written by William Thompson Skilling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature-Study Agriculture: A Textbook for Beginners The teaching of agriculture in grades below the high school has become well established in our schools, but opinions still difier as to the aims of the course and as to how the subject should be approached. The aim of an' elementary course in agriculture is well stated in a late report of the Iowa State Teachers' Association: to increase powers of appreciation, to promote general intelligence, to give a basis for the formation of educa tional ideals and the making of vocational choice, and to develop an appreciation of the possible applications of science to the useful arts. The most logical ap proach to the subject is through nature study, for the nature-study phase of agriculture, far more than the economic phases, deals with simple realities in the lives of boys and girls. Indeed, it is difficult if not impossible to dissociate the study of agriculture from the study of nature. This book was released on 2017-05-20 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Relative Values of Nature-Study and Specific Instruction in Agriculture With the recent tendency to make the nature - study work of the grades more narrowly economic and directly agricultural, the question arises as to whether in our tendency toward the utili tarian, we are giving the child the same Opportunities for develop ment which the broader field of nature-study offers. Is there here an equal opportunity for him to become more observing, as we believe he does become in the pursuit of the many problems in nature-study; will he be able to attack and work out problems as well after a series of strictly agricultural lessons as he would have been had these been more varied and general? It almost amounts to the quest are we justified in giving our work an industrial trend rather than considering it purely cultural? Book The Natural History of the Farm

Download or read book The Natural History of the Farm written by James G. Needham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of the Farm: A Guide to the Practical Study of the Sources of Our Living in Wild Nature This is a book on the sources of agriculture. Some there may be who, deeply immersed in the technicalities of modern agricultural theory and practice, have forgotten what the sources are; but they are very plain. Food and shelter and clothing are obtained now, in the main, as in the days of the patriarchs. Few materials of livelihood have been either added or eliminated. The same great groups of animals furnish us flesh and milk and wool; the same plant groups furnish us cereals, fruits and roots, cordage and fibres and staves. The beasts browsed and bred and played, the plants sprang up and flowered and fruited, then as now. We have destroyed many to make room for a chosen few. We have selected the best of these, and by tillage and care of them we have enlarged their product and greatly increased our sustenance, but we have not changed the nature or the sources of it. To see, as well as we may, what these things were like as they came to us from the hand of nature is the chief object of this course. Book Practical Nature Study and Elementary Agriculture

Download or read book Practical Nature Study and Elementary Agriculture written by John M. Coulter and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Nature Study and Elementary Agriculture: A Manual for the Use of Teachers and Normal Students Books about nature study have become numerous, perhaps more numerous than good teachers of it. These books deal with principles and methods and somewhat with material, so that the student or the teacher need be at no loss for suggestions. But the subject is so new and nature so extensive and the suggestions as to use of material often so general that the books seem to differ confusingly, and the honest seeker for help often becomes more mystified the more he reads. In fact, nature study is still in the period of suggestion, a period which may be trying to the experienced teacher, but which is a necessary antecedent to the period of experiment. The time has come for extensive experiment by trained teachers, putting to rigorous test the suggestions that seem hopeful. Teachers will always have the last word. It is not with the hope that this confusion of suggestions will be cleared up that these pages are written. Their purpose is simply to state the situation in such a way that the teacher may become more independent in his work and thought and thereby better able to eliminate confusion from his own particular problem. We shall never reach general agreement in this matter until many good teachers have conducted careful experiments and their results have been sifted. Even when this is done, teachers themselves are such variable factors that no hard-and-fast schemes of nature study can be or ought to be constructed, but rather an approved body of principles, the details of whose application must be left to the individual teacher. Every university should serve not only its resident student body, but also the entire community. This is true in a peculiar sense of a state university; supported as it is by the taxes of all the people, it is under business obligation to render back service to each? Citizen and to the commonwealth. In a general sense a university fulfills this obligation by sending edu cated young men and women back into their home communities to carry with them the culture of a broader outlook; the skill ao quired through professional training as lawyers, teachers, doctors, nurses, home-makers, business men; and especially the inspiration of unselfish service as citizens that is the intangible and priceless asset of university life. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teachers Course 100 Elements of Agriculture, Nature Study and School Gardens, Vol. 1 1. Seeing Things: - "The more I think of it. I find this conclusion more impressed upon me, that the greatest thing a human soul ever does in this world is to see something. Hundreds of people can talk for one who can think, but thousands can think for one who can see. To see clearly is poetry, prophecy and religion- all in one." Ruskin. 2. Learning Things: - "Learning those things in nature that are best worth knowing, to the end of doing those things that make life most worth living." Hodge. 3. Doing Things: - "The daily doing cf needful things with regularity andefficiency is in itself highlyeducative. It constitutes a good and necessary part of a liberal education, and without it no system of education is safe. It teaches, first of all, personal responsibility for things to be accomplished, whereby the child learns the useful lesson that things do not 'just happen', neither do they 'do themselves' - " Davenport. Place of Nature Study in a System of Education. 1. We are not, neither shall we be, free from the need of and interest in the three fundamental human requisites, viz. food, clothing, and shelter. The poet and the philosopher cannot prosper on rhyme and speculation alone. They, as well as the scientist and the laborer, must have life before they have their own peculiar lives; they, too, must be fed, clothed and sheltered. we have here a center in which the interests of all humanity, converge. Book Educational Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Educational Agriculture Classic Reprint written by Josiah Main and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Agriculture Ordinarily, in the development Of a subject it is necessary to have regard for a linear sequence only, though the work may be cumulative and the later stages assume a knowledge of all that has preceded, or at most the change of attitude is gradual. In this subject it seems necessary for the delimitation of the different phases that these changes of aspect be abrupt and at right angles. While it is possible to develop either of these subjects without regard to either of the others, the ideal of an agri cultural Or scientific education which has regard for a child as a future citizen rather than as a poet, money-maker or scientist must consider the necessity of all three factors. And the educator who is presenting any phase of the subject cannot deal justly with his pupils if he have not an instinctive regard for the previous aspects of his pupils toward the materials with which he is working. Graphic representation of three dimensions - When a product is made from three factors it may be graphically represented by a rectangular solid, the three dimensions of the solid standing for the three factors. In the nature group the common mass of subject matter may be represented by the solid, its three dimensions being the cultural, the economic and the scientific factors. This figure implies the essential relationship of the three subjects, nature study, agriculture and science, namely, that they are aspects at right angles to each other of a common mass of materials, that taking them in a fixed sequence does not relieve the student or teacher from the necessity of carrying all three factors in mind, or such of them as have been previous Objects of study (an Obligation that the teacher especially should regard), and that proficiency in one does not imply any degree of proficiency in the others.
