Download or read book Natural Reason and Natural Law written by James Carey and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural law, according to Thomas Aquinas, has its foundation in the evidence and operation of natural, human reason. Its primary precepts are self-evident. Awareness of these precepts does not presuppose knowledge of, or even belief in, the existence of God. The most interesting criticisms of Thomas Aquinas’s natural-law teaching in modern times have been advanced by the political philosopher Leo Strauss and his followers. The purpose of this book is to show that these criticisms are based on misunderstandings and that they are inconclusive at best. Thomas Aquinas’s natural-law teaching is fully rational. It is accessible to man as man.
Download or read book Acts Amid Precepts written by Kevin L. SJ Flannery and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2001-09-06 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although most natural law ethical theories recognize moral absolutes, there is not much agreement even among natural law theorists about how to identify them. The author argues that in order to understand and determine the morality (or immorality) of a human action, it must be considered in relation to the organized system of human practices within which it is performed. In order to depict this structure and to explain how it bears upon the analysis of action, the author investigates a number of issues that have attracted the attention of Thomistic and Aristotelian scholarship. He examines the nature of practical reason, its relationship with theoretical reason, the derivation of lower from higher ethical principles, the incommensurability of human goods, the relationship between will and intellect, and the principle of double effect.

Book excerpt: Bridging the Gap: Biblical Strategies for Dealing with Loneliness explores the multifaceted nature of loneliness, offering scriptural insights and practical strategies to help individuals overcome feelings of isolation. In today's world of constant connectivity, many people still experience profound loneliness despite being surrounded by friends, classmates, coworkers, and fellow churchgoers. This book delves into the causes of loneliness, examining social, personal, cultural, and spiritual factors, and contrasts the illusion of connection with genuine, meaningful relationships. Drawing on biblical wisdom, the book highlights the struggles of figures like Elijah and David, offering readers a deeper understanding of emotional and social isolation. Through the lenses of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Biblical Counseling, it addresses personal barriers to connection and provides actionable steps to build confidence, overcome shyness, and improve conversation skills. In addition, Bridging the Gap offers guidance on strengthening family bonds, nurturing friendships, and using technology wisely to foster genuine connections. With a focus on practical, church-based initiatives, it encourages readers to live out the second greatest commandment—loving their neighbors as themselves—and to actively participate in building a supportive, connected community. Whether you're seeking to understand your own loneliness or to support others in their journey, this book provides a comprehensive, faith-based approach to creating and maintaining meaningful, life-giving relationships.
Download or read book Precepts Ordinations and Practice in Medieval Japanese Tendai written by Paul Groner and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2022-07-31 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Japanese Buddhist monks of all denominations differ from those in other Asian countries because they frequently marry, drink alcohol, and eat meat. This has caused Buddhist scholars and practitioners generally to assume that early Japanese monastics had little interest in precepts and ordinations. Some medieval Japanese exegetes, however, were obsessively concerned with these topics as they strove to understand what it meant to be a Buddhist. This landmark collection of essays by Paul Groner, one of the leading authorities on Tendai Buddhism, examines the medieval Tendai School, which dominated Japanese Buddhism at that time, to uncover the differences in understanding and interpreting monastic precepts and ordinations. Rather than provide an unbroken narrative account—made virtually impossible due to the number of undated apocryphal texts and those lost in the numerous fires and warfare that beset Tendai temples as well as the difficulties of tracing how texts were used—Groner employs a multifaceted approach, focusing on individual monks, texts, ceremonies, exegetical problems, and institutional issues. Early chapters look at a major source of Tendai precepts, the apocryphal Brahma’s Net Sutra; the Tendai scholar Annen’s (b. 841) interpretations of the universal bodhisattva precept ordination and the historical background of his commentary on the subject; Tendai perfect-sudden precepts and the Vinaya; and the role of confession in the bodhisattva ordination. Groner goes on to discuss the Lotus Sutra, another key text for Tendai precepts, and the monk Kōen (1262–1317) and his role in developing the consecrated ordination, which is still performed today. Later essays introduce Jitsudō Ninkū’s (1307–1388) system of training by doctrinal debate and his commentary on ordinations; doctrinal discussions of killing; and Tendai discussions among several lineages on whether the precepts can be lost or violated. Many of the issues discussed in the volume—particularly how to distinguish various types of Buddhist practitioners and how to conduct ordinations—continue to preoccupy Tendai monks centuries later. The book concludes with an examination of the effects of early Tendai precepts on modern practice.
Download or read book Successes and Limitations of Targeted Cancer Therapy written by S. Peters and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The treatment of patients with advanced malignancies has undergone remarkable change in the last few years. While in the past decisions about systemic therapy were largely based on the performance status of a patient, oncologists today also take into account the pathological and molecular characteristics of the patient’s tumor. Targeting specific molecular pathways important for tumorigenesis has become the preferred way of treatment for many types of malignancies. With these advances come new challenges including the optimization of therapy, recognizing and dealing with side effects and, importantly, the development of resistance. This book provides an up-to-date overview of the advances and limitations of targeted therapy for several tumor entities including breast cancer, colon cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, lung cancer, melanoma, ovarian cancer and renal cell carcinoma. Written by over a dozen internationally renowned scientists, the book is suitable for advanced students, postdoctoral researchers, scientists and clinicians who wish to update their knowledge of the latest approaches to targeted cancer therapies.

Download or read book Art in Three Dimensions written by Noël Carroll and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art in Three Dimensions is a collection of essays by one of the most eminent figures in philosophy of art. The animating idea behind Noël Carroll's work is that philosophers of art should eschew the sort of aestheticism that often implicitly — but sometimes explicitly, as in the case of aesthetic theories of art and of their commitments to the notion of the autonomy of art — governs their methodology. Instead, Carroll argues that philosophers of art need to refocus their attention on the ways in which art enters the life of culture and the lives of individual audience members. The reference to "three dimensions" in the title refers to Carroll's view that philosophers of art should look at art from multiple angles and treat it as a substantial participant not only in society, but also as a significant influence upon the moral and emotional experiences of audiences.
