Book Augustine on the Nature of Virtue and Sin

Download or read book Augustine on the Nature of Virtue and Sin written by Katherine Chambers and published by . This book was released on 2024-01-10 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine of Hippo is a key figure in the history of Christianity and has had a profound impact on the course of western moral and political thought. Katherine Chambers here explores a neglected topic in Augustinian studies by offering a systematic account of the meaning that Augustine gave to the notions of virtue, vice and sin. Countering the view that he broke with classical eudaimonism, she demonstrates that Augustine's moral thought builds on the dominant approach to ethics in classical 'pagan' antiquity. A critical appraisal of this tradition reveals that Augustine remained faithful to the eudaimonist approach to ethics. Chambers also refutes the view that Augustine was a political pessimist or realist, showing that it is based upon a misunderstanding of Augustine's ideas about the virtue of justice. Providing a coherent account of key features in Augustine's ethics, her study invites a new and fresh evaluation of his influence on western moral and political thought.

Book Sin Forgiveness and Righteousness

Download or read book Sin Forgiveness and Righteousness written by Dr. Ashwin Drummond and published by Ladder To Heaven. This book was released on 2023-08-20 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Present book delves into the aspects of moving away from God and making a full circle of coming back to Him and enjoying eternal life. In order to understand the gravity of sin, an attempt has been made to form an idea of the eternity, Holiness and Aseity of God. This obviously refers to the self-sufficiency and the non-dependability of the Great God. The Uncreated Creator God, is life and everything that exists is created by Him and is dependent on Him. He is also the epitome of Holiness. Once we understand this great aspect of the Great Uncreated Creator God, can we understand how abhorrent sin is to the Most Holy and how sin comes between God and Human Beings. The great efforts made on the part of God to reconcile man to this abhorrent situation through the forgiveness of sin through the death of His son Jesus Christ has been explained in layman’s language. Finally, how we are made right with God with the imputed righteousness of Jesus has been touched upon for a finer understanding of the matter. Once reconciled with God we have the golden opportunity to become once again immortal and spend the rest of our life with our lord in eternity.

In this second volume, a new journey begins with Anselm of Canterbury and leads to the Council of Trent. While the themes of sin, grace and free will are familiar to any Christian, Knell provides a comprehensive overview of the thought on such matters of crucial Christian thinkers and reformers. In doing so, the second volume explores not only the Catholic way of dealing with these central topics, but also Martin Luther, Huldrych Zwingli, and John Calvin’s views and different approaches. Book excerpt: The first rule of combat is: know your enemy. We don’t talk a lot about sin these days. But maybe we should. The Puritans sure did—because they understood sin’s deceptive power and wanted to root it out of their lives. Shouldn’t we want the same? Though many books have been written on the “doctrine of sin,” few are as practical and applicable as this one. In Knowing Sin, Mark Jones puts his expertise in the Puritans to work by distilling the vast wisdom of our Christian forebears into a single volume that summarizes their thought on this vital subject. The result isn’t a theological tome to sit on your shelf and gather dust, but a surprisingly relevant book to keep by your bedside and refer to again and again. You’ll come to understand topics like: Sin’s Origin Sin’s Grief Sin’s Thoughts Sin’s Temptations Sin’s Misery Sin’s Secrecy and of course . . . Sin’s Defeat! None of us is free from the struggle with sin. The question isn’t whether we’re sinful, it’s what we’re doing about it. Thanks be to God, there is a path to overcoming sin. And the first step on that path to victory is knowing what we’re up against. Start Knowing Sin today!

Book Grace Predestination and the Permission of Sin

Download or read book Grace Predestination and the Permission of Sin written by O'Neil and published by Catholic University of America Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace, Predestination, and the Permission of Sin seeks to analyze a revisionist movement within Thomism in the 20th century over and against the traditional or classical Thomistic commentatorial treatment of physical premotion, grace, and the permission of sin, especially as these relate to the mysteries of predestination and reprobation. The over-arching critique leveled by the revisionists against the classic treatment is that Bañezian scholasticism had disregarded the dissymmetry between the line of good (God's causation of salutary acts) and the line of evil (God's permission of defect and sin). The teaching of St. Thomas is explored via intimate consideration of his texts. The thought of St. Thomas is then compared with the work of Domingo Bañez and the foremost 'Bañezian' of the 20th century, Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange. The work then shifts to a consideration of the major players of the revisionist treatment, including Francisco Marín-Sola, Jacques Maritain, and Bernard Lonergan. Jean-Herve Nicolas is also taken up as one who had held both accounts during his lifetime. The work analyzes and critiques the revisionist theories according to the fundamental tenets of the classical account. Upon final analysis, it seeks to show that the classical account sufficiently distances God's causal role in regard to free salutary acts and His non-causal role in regard to free sinful acts. Moreover, the revisionist account presents significant metaphysical problems and challenges major tenets of classical theism, such as the divine omnipotence, simplicity, and the exhaustive nature of divine providence. Finally, the implications of the traditional view are considered in light of the spiritual life. It is argued that the classical account is the only one which provides an adequate theological foundation for the Church's robust mystical and spiritual tradition, and in particular, the abandonment to divine providence.
