This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Regeneration in Ponderosa Pine Forests of Western Montana Following harvest cutting, natural regeneration of ponderosa pine (pinus ponderosa Laws.) in western Montana usually is uncertain. Therefore, forest managers frequently rely on planting to promptly regenerate ponderosa pine and prevent future gaps in volume production. When the forester decides to restock an area by natural regeneration, he must effectively manipulate the factors under his control that influence seedling establishment. Good ponderosa pine seed crops occur at irregular intervals (usda Forest Service thus, timing of site preparation to coincide with seed production is a critical requirement for successful natural regeneration. Once cones are initiated, it is important to understand the factors influencing their survival. In addition, stimula tion of cone production by girdling or release of seed trees would be a useful tool if ponderosa pine responds to either of these treatments. Even when a sufficient seed crop is produced, the success of natural regeneration is further influenced by: (l) dissemination to a favorable seedbed; (2) seed loss to biotic agents; (3) germination of the remaining seed; and (4) survival of germinated seedlings. Book Management of Ponderosa Pine in the Southwest as Developed by Research and Experimental Practice Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Management of Ponderosa Pine in the Southwest as Developed by Research and Experimental Practice Ponderosa pine, from the very beginning of the conservation movement, has figured as a leading timber species. In 1908 G. A. Pearson, a year out of forest school, was sent to Arizona to study natural regeneration of this tree, then called Western yellow pine. Commercial logging was in full swing on both private and public lands. In the national forests, despite measures that seemed adequate for natural reforestation, seedlings started sparingly after cutting. To provide information on natural regeneration as well as on other phases of ponderosa pine management, the Forest Service established the Fort Valley Forest Experiment Station in 1909. The research field covered Arizona and New Mexico, but work was concentrated largely in what is now the Fort Valley Experimental Forest, a branch of the Southwestern Forest and Range Experiment Station. Download or read book Predicting Regeneration Establishment with the Prognosis Model Classic Reprint written by Dennis E Ferguson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Predicting Regeneration Establishment With the Prognosis Model Forests of Idaho and Montana are quite diverse. Environmental conditions support forest types ranging from dry ponderosa pine (pinus ponderosa) for ests, to near-rain forests dominated by western redcedar (thuja plicata) and western hemlock (tsuga heterophylla), to high-elevation subalpine fir (abies lasiocarpa) and Whitebark pine (pinus albicaulis) forests where the gron season is short. These forests are highly valued for timber, wildlife, water, grazing, recreation, biological diversity, and esthetics. Management often involves the manipulation of conifers through timber harvests, natural and artificial regeneration, site preparation, weedings, and thinnings; control of competing vegetation such as shrubs, forbs, and grasses; and control of insects, diseases, and wildfires. Manipulation of for ests changes the course of secondary succession which, in turn, affects the future of these ecosystems. Land managers need to know how their actions affect the course of second ary succession. One particularly important effect is the regeneration of coni fers following timber harvest. Can cutover areas be regenerated in a timely manner to desirable species having acceptable growth rates? Which of sev eral alternative silvicultural prescriptions should be used to reach desired future conditions? Land managers compare alternative silvicultural prescriptions to determine which one best meets management objectives. These comparisons need to be quantified in a biologically meaningful and statistically sound manner. Fortunately, the necessary information is available to quantify the regener ation process in much of the Western United States.
