Book Seismic Assessment and Rehabilitation of Existing Buildings

Download or read book Seismic Assessment and Rehabilitation of Existing Buildings written by S. Tanvir Wasti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains a total of 23 papers centred on the research area of Seismic Assessment and Rehabilitation of Existing Buildings. This subject also forms the core of Project SfP977231, sponsored by the NATO Science for Peace Office and supported by the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey [ TUBIT AK ]. Most of these papers were presented by the authors at a NATO Science for Peace Workshop held in Izmir on 13 - 14 May, 2003 and reflect a part of their latest work conducted within the general confines of the title of the NATO Project. Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey serves as the hub of Project SfP977231 and coordinates research under the project with universities within Turkey, e. g. Istanbul Technical University and Kocaeli University, and with partner institutions in Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia: A few articles have also been contributed by invited experts, who are all noted researchers in the field. Altogether, the contents of the volume deal with a vast array of problems in Seismic Assessment and Rehabilitation and cover a wide range of possible solutions, techniques and proposals. It is intended to touch upon many of these aspects separately below. Earthquakes constitute possibly the most widely spread and also the most feared of natural hazards. Recent earthquakes within the first six months of 2003, such as the Bingol Earthquake in Turkey and the Algerian earthquake, have caused both loss of life and severe damage to property.

Book Building s Vulnerability Assessment Against Natural Hazards by Using Modern Computational Techniques

Download or read book Building s Vulnerability Assessment Against Natural Hazards by Using Modern Computational Techniques written by Tom Lahmer and published by . This book was released on 2024-03-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent global events have underscored the critical need for advancing research on buildings and fortifying their resilience against the escalating threat of natural hazards. One paramount task in this pursuit is the rapid and precise assessment of existing buildings' vulnerability to natural hazard activities-a crucial endeavor that demands simplicity, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. The dispersion of big data and the complexity of conducting a detailed construction analysis can hinder the expeditious identification of vulnerable structures, especially in the face of a large-scale mitigation campaign. This Special Issue focuses on the development and application of modern computational techniques in the assessment of a building's vulnerability to natural hazards. This collection explores innovative methods, such as artificial neural networks and fuzzy logicmachine learning, which have demonstrated unparalleled efficiency in dealing with big data and capturing non-linear relationships among various parameters affecting a building's resilience against earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters. The articles within this Special Issue delved into the practical implementation of these soft computational techniques, offering insights into their reliability and applicability. By bridging the gap between traditional construction analysis and the urgency of identifying vulnerable buildings, this Special Issue aims to pave the way for a fast and reliable methodology that aligns with the demands of our dynamic urban landscapes.

Book Damage Assessment and Reconstruction after War or Natural Disaster

Download or read book Damage Assessment and Reconstruction after War or Natural Disaster written by Adnan Ibrahimbegovic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-14 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1. SAFETY OF CIVIL STRUCTURES Society expects that the failure of civil structures is extremely rare and relies on the care and expertise of the professionals involved in the design, construction and maintenance of structures. This is in particular true for public technical systems such as transportation or energy supply systems and structures such as bridges. Structural safety may be defined as follows: “Adequate safety with respect to a hazard is ensured provided that the hazard is kept under control by appropriate measures or the risk is limited to an acceptable value. Absolute safety is not achievable.” It is thus not the structure as such that is designated safe but rather the people, goods and the environment in its surroundings. The continued use of existing structures is of great importance because the built environment is a huge economic and political asset, growing larger every year. Nowadays evaluation of the safety of existing structures is a major engineering task, and structural engineers are increasingly called upon to devise ways for extending the life of structures whilst observing tight cost constraints. Also, existing structures are expected to resist against accidental actions although they were not designed for. Engineers may apply specific methods for evaluation in order to preserve structures and to reduce a client’s expenditure. The ultimate goal is to limit construction intervention to a minimum, a goal that is clearly in agreement with the principles of sustainable development.

Book Protection of Built Environment Against Earthquakes

Download or read book Protection of Built Environment Against Earthquakes written by Matjaž Dolšek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-16 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current knowledge and state-of-the-art developments in topics related to the seismic performance and risk assessment of different types of structures and building stock are addressed in the book, with emphasis on probabilistic methods. The first part addresses the global risk components, as well as seismic hazard and ground motions, whereas the second, more extensive part presents recent advances in methods and tools for the seismic performance and risk assessment of structures. The book contains examples of steel, masonry and reinforced concrete buildings, as well as some examples related to various types of infrastructure, such as bridges and concrete gravity dams. The book's aim is to make a contribution towards the mitigation of seismic risk by presenting advanced methods and tools which can be used to achieve well-informed decision-making, this being the key element for the future protection of the built environment against earthquakes. Audience: This book will be of interest to researchers, postgraduate students and practicing engineers working in the fields of natural hazards, earthquake, structural and geotechnical engineering, and computational mechanics, but it may also be attractive to other experts working in the fields related to social and economic impact of earthquakes.
