Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Elementary Geography This book develops the subject upon a definite and natural plan, and in harmony with approved principles of teaching. Each lesson, while complete in itself, paves the way to the following lesson. The pupil is led from that which is perfectly familiar and within easy range Of his Observation, to form correct ideas of things that are remote and strange; and not until such notions have been formed are these things named or defined. Generalizations are demanded only after the materials for their formation have been studied. The pupil's own country is presented early in the treatment, and then all other countries are studied in their relations to it. The subject is treated simply and sensibly. The book keeps well within the range Of the pupil's comprehension, but never descends to baby talk or other artificial means to hold his attention. The pupil is required to work rather than the teacher, and at the same time the book excites the interest Of both pupil and teacher and stimulates them University College, Toronto. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Geography: A Text-Book for Children Children naturally prefer types to generalities; there fore a lesson is devoted to a typical mountain, river, coast-line, and valley, in place of general descriptions of such natural objects. Children are also fond of the personal element and the story form; for this reason a real teacher and real classes are employed in the text. For the same reason the style in Part IV, or in the journeys, is that of the traveller telling his experiences. This method of presentation will be found to help the memory wonderfully, because inter est is enlisted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Morton s Elementary Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Morton s Elementary Geography Classic Reprint written by Eliza H. Morton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morton's Elementary Geography Geography naturally resolves itself into a description of that part of the earth's surface which is within one's field of observation and of that part which is beyond the home surroundings. The child should begin to study geography as soon as he is old enough to notice to any extent the objects about him. The instruction at first must of necessity be entirely oral. It should gradually enlarge the pupil's mental horizon and lead to conceptions of things far away. The oral work should be continued until the child is prepared to consider the earth as a unit. At this stage of progress a primary book may be placed in his hands. Each lesson, however, should be preceded by oral explanations. The language of the book should be Simple, concise, and accurate. It should begin with and constantly refer to the child's experience and environment. It Should introduce, naturally and in logical order, the various topics pertaining to the earth as a whole. It Should recognize the fact that the relation of the part to the whole is an elementary principle. When the earth is first considered part by part, the parts are with great difficulty, if ever, put into a harmonious whole. While it is true that the immense Size of the earth, its movements, and their relation to' other phenomena, are facts pertaining to a phase of geography which cannot be fully grasped by. Immature minds, yet distinct ideas of the elements which together form the world may be early imparted. It is impossible for children to study their own country intelligently as a whole, or in sections, Without this preparatory world study. Book Elementary Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Geography Classic Reprint written by Henry Justin Roddy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Geography From the title-page of this book may be gathered an idea of its design, scope, and method. Prepared in accordance with the views of advanced teachers, it is believed to embody the most natural and philosophical system. It treats the subject objectively, makes knowledge precede definitions, and presents facts in their logical connections, taking gradual steps from the known to the unknown. It is offered to the public in the hope that it will lay a substantial foundation for the subjective development of this branch of study in the Human book. In this volume the aim has been, not to teach much, but to teach what beginners can understand and digest. It has been sought to lay no unnecessary burden on the young learner; to sift out the useful from the unimportant; and so to link geographical facts with striking facts of history, of natural history, and of social life, that they may be permanently im pressed on the mind. Special attention is asked to the system of reviews, to the written exercises interspersed, to the para graphs in heavy-faced type summing up from time to time what is most necessary to be remembered, and to the occa sional references introduced for the encouragement of more extended reading on interesting points. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physical Geography The educational progress of recent years has resulted in two profitable advances for the venerable subject of Geography. A strong feeling has been developed in favor of treating the subject as a whole more rationally than heretofore, and a wholesome desire has arisen in favor of introducing some of its scientific aspects more generally into the school course. A natural accompaniment of this progress has been a demand for text-books that shall present Physical Geography in its modern scientific development as well as in an elementary form. The present book, reduced from the author's Physical Geography, has been prepared to meet this demand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Teaching of Geography in Elementary Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of Geography in Elementary Schools Classic Reprint written by Richard Lawrence Archer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Geography in Elementary Schools This little book is an attempt to apply the newer conceptions of Geography to teaching in elementary schools. It in no way aims at being original in its treatment of the subject itself: for these we are indebted to the body of geographers who have during the last few years revolutionized the con ception of the subject, in particular to Mr. H. J. Mackinder and Dr. A. J. Herbertson, to Whose works frequent reference is made in the following pages. We felt, however, that in regard to the teaching of Geography in elementary schools, the central idea for which they are struggling - that Geography is, above all things, the examination of the effect of natural agencies on human affairs - is not yet sufficiently recognized and acted upon, and our alm IS to throw out some suggestions as to changes in the teaching which we believe would help the better realization of this idea. In the case of branches of the subject which have only recently come into prominence, we have given some outline of the subject-matter to serve as an introduction of them to readers to whom they may be unfamiliar, and have added information as to sources from which information may be obtained. In the Index the pages where subjects are treated most fully have been printed in black type. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Natural Elementary Geography

Download or read book Natural Elementary Geography written by Jacques W. Redway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Elementary Geography It demands work from the pupil, rather than from the teacher, while it stimulates independent thought and excites the interest of both. The body of the text abounds in questions that inspire thought, and, at the end of the treatment of each grand division, carefully prepared exercises lead to the correlation and comparison of the parts of the subject already studied, and form a cumulative review and synthesis of the pupil's work. It provides material for the concentration, or "correlation," of studies. The text exemplifies the fundamental laws of composition, and may be used in language work. The topics at the end of each lesson outline a few paragraphs in which the pupil can reproduce in his own words the main thought of the lesson. It recognizes the value of map drawing and sand modeling in elementary geography, and introduces them in such manner that they shall be properly used as means to an end, and not as ends in themselves. The relief maps contain the names of the features represented, and require no "key maps" or other accessories to adapt them for practical use. The maps of coordinate divisions of the land are drawn on the same scale, so that relative areas are accurately depicted and may be directly compared. Thus, a single scale serves for all the maps of the grand divisions; a single, but larger, scale for the maps of the United States and Europe; and a single, but still larger, scale for the sectional maps of the United States, with the exception of that of the Northeastern States, which is drawn on twice the scale of the others. The pictures, most of which have been reproduced from photographs, are of simple subjects within the comprehension of young pupils, and they have been arranged upon the pages in such manner and in such numbers that they serve a really useful purpose in illustrating the text. The author takes pleasure in acknowledging his indebtedness to Miss Louise Connolly of the Washington (D.C.) public schools, for the active assistance she has rendered in perfecting and adapting his manuscript. Her intimate acquaintance with the work of the schoolroom, as well as with geographical literature, has been of the utmost value; and to her untiring efforts the merits of the book are due in no slight degree. Acknowledgments are also due to Miss Mathilde Coffin of Detroit and Miss Carl L. Garrison of Washington, for assistance in the revision of manuscript and proof, and to Colonel Francis W. Parker of the Chicago Normal School, and Mr. Frank O. Payne of Glen Cove, N.Y., for valuable suggestions and advice. Book Elementary Geography

Download or read book Elementary Geography written by Charlotte Mason and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This little book is confined to very simple “reading lessons upon the Form and Motions of the Earth, the Points of the Compass, the Meaning of a Map: Definitions.” The shape and motions of the earth are fundamental ideas—however difficult to grasp. Geography should be learned chiefly from maps, and the child should begin the study by learning “the meaning of map,” and how to use it. These subjects are well fitted to form an attractive introduction to the study of Geography: some of them should awaken the delightful interest which attaches in a child’s mind to that which is wonderful—incomprehensible. The Map lessons should lead to mechanical efforts, equally delightful. It is only when presented to the child for the first time in the form of stale knowledge and foregone conclusions that the facts taught in these lessons appear dry and repulsive to him. An effort is made in the following pages to treat the subject with the sort of sympathetic interest and freshness which attracts children to a new study. A short summary of the chief points in each reading lesson is given in the form of questions and answers. Easy verses, illustrative of the various subjects, are introduced, in order that the children may connect pleasant poetic fancies with the phenomena upon which “Geography” so much depends. It is hoped that these reading lessons may afford intelligent teaching, even in the hands of a young teacher. The first ideas of Geography—the lessons on “Place”—which should make the child observant of local geography, of the features of his own neighbourhood, its heights and hollows and level lands, its streams and ponds—should be conveyed viva voce. At this stage, a class-book cannot take the place of an intelligent teacher. Children should go through the book twice, and should, after the second reading, be able to answer any of the questions from memory. Charlotte M. Mason

Book First Book of Physical Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Book of Physical Geography Classic Reprint written by Ralph S. Tarr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear.
