The essay examines the cost sharing of the program by member nations in an effort to determine whether the US percentage share is disproportionate to that of the other members. It concludes that the rapid economic growth of the Western European nations has enabled them to assume a greater portion of the defense burden with a subsequent lessening of US defense expenditures and an improved balance of payments position.
