Book excerpt: The main objective of this thesis is to investigate nationalism as the main source of instability and ethnic conflict in the sub-region of Southern Balkans -Albania, Bulgaria, Greece and Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). It starts with a brief history of the Balkan Peninsula and the birth of nationalism in the region during the 19th century with the Wars for Independence from the Ottoman Empire. Then, it discusses the current developments in the area and the rebirth of nationalism after the end of the Cold War. Next, it discusses two proposed solutions, which are a) To support the status quo (Multi- Ethnic States) and b) To redraw the borders (Creation of Nation- States) in order to reduce nationalism and ethnic conflict in the Balkans, There are two proposed solutions that can reduce nationalism and provide stability and accordingly economic and democratic development in the area. Finally, it examines the role of some other interrelated factors, like the Euro-Atlantic institutions -EU and NATO- and the international institution -the UN- as well as the role of Greece, which can help in developing stability in the Southern Balkans.

The rise of nationalism in the region is viewed as part of a world-historical process of globalization over the last five centuries. With the growing contacts between the Ottoman Empire and the Western European system, the Eastern Orthodox of the Balkans abandoned the enthoconfessional system of social organization in favor of secular national identities. Prior to 1820, local nationalism was influenced by the Enlightenment, though later it came to be developed on an ethnonational basis. In the post-1830 Balkans, citizenship rights were subordinated to ethnic nationalism, according to which membership to a nation is accorded on the basis of church affiliation and ethnicity. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the discourse of nationhood was institutionalized by the native intelligentsia of the Balkan states. In the first half of the 20th century, the efforts of Balkan states to achieve national homogenization produced interstate rivalry, forced population exchanges, and discrimination against minority groups. While the Cold War helped contain some of these problems, the post-1989 period has seen a return of these issues to the forefront of the Balkan political agenda.

These concepts include not only images of the nation itself, but also images of other peoples. Although the construction of ethnic stereotypes during the "long" nineteenth century initially had other functions than simply the homogenization of the particular culture and the exclusion of "others" from the public sphere, the evaluation of peoples according to criteria that included "level of civilization" yielded "rankings" of ethnic groups within the Habsburg Monarchy. Book excerpt: In this comparative study of Muslim nation-building and the so-called 'ethnic conflicts' the author reveals stunning parallels between the collapse of Tito's Yugoslavia and the ethno-national separation of colonial India. In both cases Muslims ended up in a nation state of their own without the majority of them wanting one. There were no mass movements that demanded a new 'homeland', which contradicts modernisation-theory approaches of nationalism. Wieland digs below the surface and sketches historic developments that triggered the construction and instrumentalisation of 'ethnic groups' in both cases. He concludes that the term ethnicity has lost its academic value because it suffers from inconsistencies and strong political implications. 'Ethnicity' is not an existing group of people but a concept of action and political resource detached from any historic context. The 'ethnocentre' varies. In both the Yugoslavian and the Indian case it was religion around which secondary features were added as contrast boosters. Bosnia and Pakistan were founded under the strong influence of political elites and external political actors, like the colonial power or the international community, who themselves through within the ethno-national paradigm and acted accordingly. This helped to create Muslim nation states despite considerable contradictions between the political action group and the 'ethnic group' they claimed to represent. While delivering convincing facts and new perspectives, this book is a passionate appeal for the deconstruction of 'ethnic' camps.
