Book Anatomy of Spirituality Portrait of the Soul

Download or read book Anatomy of Spirituality Portrait of the Soul written by Chander Behl and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-04-27 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The domain of spirituality, separated from its theological overburden, believes in the existence of a spiritual self, presumed to be distinctly separate from the psychological self. The spiritual eternal self, also known as the soul or spirit (sometimes supported by an overarching Spirit), is asserted to be operating behind the ephemeral self. This book takes a contrarian stance; it argues that the premise of the soul concept is obtained through the magic of language, maintained through the marvel of the brain’s biochemistry, and sustained through the mirage of the psychological juggernauts of the brain. The magic, the marvel and the mirage, together, bring about subtle shifts as the linguistic brain suppresses many psychological details, habitually applies mental templates such as inversions and dichotomies, and enhances its language by coining religious and spiritual metaphors. The consequence of these changes is that the usual flickering self begins to be impressed by itself, believing it is buttressed by something transcendental and eternal within: the soul or the spirit. The self, although indoctrinated during its formative years, also begins to assimilate and accept the opinion that the overwhelming weight of religious doctrines and dogmas, the overburden, signifies as the legitimate proof for the eternal soul.

Driven by moral imperatives and pressing environmental realities, Bekoff offers six compelling reasons for changing the way we treat animals — whether they’re in factory farms, labs, circuses, or our vanishing wilderness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although spare, sweeping landscapes may appear "empty," plains and prairies afford a rich, unique aesthetic experience--one of quiet sunrises and dramatic storms, hidden treasures and abundant wildlife, infinite horizons and omnipresent wind, all worthy of contemplation and celebration. In this series of narratives, photographs, and hand-drawn maps, Tyra Olstad blends scholarly research with first-hand observation to explore topics such as wildness and wilderness, travel and tourism, preservation and conservation, expectations and acceptance, and even dreams and reality in the context of parks, prairies, and wild, open places. In so doing, she invites readers to reconsider the meaning of "emptiness" and ask larger, deeper questions such as: how do people experience the world? How do we shape places and how do places shape us? Above all, what does it mean to experience that exhilarating effect known as Zen of the plains?

Book Under a Black Cloud

Download or read book Under a Black Cloud written by Frank Spalding and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2009-01-15 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The defining challenge of the twenty-first century for the entire world may very well be the health of our atmosphere, both the delicate balance of gases in its upper reaches and the air we breathe at ground level. Increases in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases appear to be resulting in rapid and possibly catastrophic global warming and climate change. Pollution at lower altitudes—caused by such things as car exhaust and industrial emissions—is causing the destruction of flora and fauna as well as health problems in humans. The invisible element that we draw deeply into our lungs about 17,000 times a day may be poisoning us now that we have poisoned it. The future of life on earth may be in real peril. This hard-hitting book spells out exactly the state we're in, where we're headed, and what can be done to insure that conditions do not worsen for future generations.

This textbook tackles timely topics such as gender and inequality issues; organised religion; the economic krizis; and Russia's place in the international community. It uses numerous examples to place this powerful and richly-endowed country in context, with a focus on the place of ordinary people which shows how policy is translated to Russians' everyday lives.
