Growing awareness of the unintended impacts associated with some agricultural production practices has led to heightened societal expectations for improved environmental, community, labor, and animal welfare standards in agriculture. Toward Sustainable Agricultural Systems in the 21st Century assesses the scientific evidence for the strengths and weaknesses of different production, marketing, and policy approaches for improving and reducing the costs and unintended consequences of agricultural production. In 1999, a national workshop was held at Ballina, NSW Australia, to discuss EMS implementation on Australian farms (Carruthers and Tinning 1999). Since then, the on-going development of EMS in Australian agriculture has gained international attention, with Australia recognised by many as a world leader. However, for many people, both in Australia and overseas, the concept of applying a management process to natural resources on-farm is foreign; scepticism of improved environmental outcomes is common, and uncertainty regarding the benefits of EMS use remains one of the major barriers to support and adoption of this management tool. Application of EMS processes, typically within the secondary industry sector, has led to a perception by some in agricultural industries that use of EMS on farms is \U+2018\beyond farmers', \U+2018\too hard', \U+2018\too complex' and \U+2018\too expensive'. Much of the uncertainty regrading benefits and costs of EMS implementation comes from a lack of information regarding its use in agriculture. Many of the methods of evaluation and measurement of EMS use and success may not be appropriate. This report aimed to assess the usefulness of applying a process of managment more usually associated with secondary industry within an agricultural context."--Executive summary.

The project has supported establishment of a National CSA at Yezin Agriculture University in Myanmar. One of the key activities of the National CSA Center is to organize annual workshop/conference to share ideas, opportunities and challenges with regards to CSA and SLM and to discuss on the way forwards. Such workshops will focus on different themes of CSA and SLM every year. Accordingly, the first workshop was organized by the CSA Center at YAU on 14th Sep 2018 and the theme of this workshop was “Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture in Myanmar”. This proceeding presents the background of the project and workshop and compiles all the papers presented during the workshop.

Book excerpt: In this study, an overview is presented of agricultural policies on manure and minerals, relating to the Nitrate Directive to remedy excessive surface- and groundwater contamination from intensive agricultural practices. Six countries belonging to the European Union were studied: the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. The policies and their legal incorporation were related to agricultural and environmental conditions in each country. In addition, an inventory was made of agricultural mineral poli cies in the United States and Canada. Conditions for livestock farming in North America differ considerably from those in Europe, but their solutions shed a different light on European policies. Research has shown that there are still very considerable mineral surpluses in many countries and regions. In both the Netherlands and in the Flemish part of Belgium, existing problems due to very high levels of manure production are structural rather than local and cannot easily be solved by transport of manure to other regions. To a lesser extent. Germany, Denmark and relatively small parts of France (Brittany) and the United Kingdom, still exceed the norms for an equilibrium fertilization. In Denmark, existing problems can probably be solved within the existing legislative framework.
