Download or read book The Sutherland Inquiry written by Stewart R. Sutherland and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sutherland Inquiry, (HCP 62, session 2008-09, ISBN 9780102958393), is an independent inquiry remitted by the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) and the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, into the delivery of the National Curriculum tests in 2008. In July 2008, 1.2 million pupils heard that their National Curriculum test results would be delayed. The test delivery service represented a failure in customer delivery service, to the pupils, schools and also the markers upon whom the National Curriculum testing regime relies. The primary responsibility must therefore rest with the American organisation, ETS Global BV (ETS), which won the public contract to deliver the tests and failed its customers. This report examines how this organisation secured the contract, what its plans were, and why its systems and process as a whole were not properly tested. The report will also describe how ETS's systems failed during the test delivery process. There was also a failure on the part of the Government's Non-Departmental Public Body, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority to deliver its remit. The report also sets out the procurement process that QCA used to select its delivery supplier, ETS, and how it managed the contract. The report sets out a number of recommendations on how test delivery can improve in future years, and has set out a number of key priorities, including: that the delivery process of the National Curriculum tests should be modernised and improved, in consultation with the marking community, including piloting online marking; that whatever process is used should be thoroughly piloted and project managed to ensure schools and pupils get their results on time; that the customer service provided to markers must be vastly improved to ensure that they are properly supported and are able to access up-to-date information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge, Values and Educational Policy focuses on what schools are for and what should be taught in them, how learning is possible across boundaries, and issues of diversity and equity. Policies and practices relating to schools are also considered. Within this volume, internationally renowned contributors address a number of fundamental questions designed to take the reader to the heart of current debates around curriculum, knowledge transfer, equity and social justice, and system reform, such as: What are schools and what are they for? What knowledge should schools teach? How are learners different from each other and how are groups of learners different from one another, in terms of social class, gender, ethnicity, and disability? What influence does educational policy have on improving schools? What influence does research have on our understanding of education and schooling? To encourage reflection, many of the chapters also include questions for debate and a guide to further reading. Read alongside its companion volume, Educational Theories, Cultures and Learning, readers will be encouraged to consider and think about on some of the key issues facing education and educationists today.
Download or read book Assessment In Secondary Schools written by Val Brooks and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2002-01-16 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a very important book. Assessment is one of the most technically and professionally challenging of topics for new teachers. Val Brooks has brought her own impressive technical expertise to bear, and sets out the key professional demands in a thorough, logical and clear way. The book draws extensively on practical examples which exemplify and develop the argument. New teachers will find it an invaluable guide; experienced teachers will find that it widens their understanding of assessment as a tool for learning" - Chris Husbands, University of Warwick "Mentors will find much to aid their sessions with student teachers, while senior staff responsible for professional development will have a sound, easily read source of material. Highly recommended" - British Journal of Educational Studies How can new teachers use assessment to enhance their teaching? How can assessment help pupils to learn? What are the arrangements for testing and examinations and the statutory assessment requirements at secondary school level? This book is aimed at students who are preparing to teach in secondary schools, and newly qualified teachers in their induction year. The entire text is devoted to assessment and therefore it is able to offer an in-depth consideration of aspects of assessment which exercise teachers at the beginning of their career, for example the relationship between assessment and learning, how assessment contributes to planning, ways of marking pupils' work, writing reports for parents and meetings with parents. Although it is informed by theory and research, the text has a practical orientation. It provides practical examples for readers to consider in developing their own practices and makes suggestions for activities intended to help beginning teachers to develop their own ideas and insights into assessment. The text is written for a graduate and undergraduate audience and aims to promote a thoughtful, well-informed approach to assessment and critical awareness of issues which arise out of practice.

Are they better or worse at numeracy than their neighbours? Does the English education system measure up to the challenge from its competitors? This text shows what pupils in England and France are doing in the classroom and what standards they achieve. The voices of the pupils themselves articulate numerous perceptions.
