Book Women School Superintendents

Download or read book Women School Superintendents written by Susan J. Katz and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In U.S. public schools a limited number of women have attained the position of superintendent. Consequently, there has been limited research focusing on understanding the position from a woman?s perspective. The purpose of this study was to add to the small body of literature focusing on women?s ideas and beliefs about leading schools. A survey consisting of a measure of perceived leadership practices and questions of demographics was sent to women public school superintendents practicing in four Midwestern states during the academic year, 2000-2001. In addition to the survey, face-to-face interviews were conducted with a small sample of women in the study. The study's framework was based on a model of leadership developed by Kouzes & Posner (1995) and incorporated into The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) they developed and used in this study. The research questions asked if there were differences in how the women superintendents perceived their leadership practices based on age, years of administrative experience, and size and structure of their districts. Data analysis revealed that there were significant differences in perceived leadership practices according to size of school district. The study also revealed that women have ways to talk about how they have succeeded in their roles as superintendents. Also women in this study viewed relational leadership as a key component of their leadership style. New findings indicated that the women superintendents believed good hiring practices and specific qualities of a leader were essential elements to effective leadership.

Book Perceived Leadership Practices of Female Superintendents in North Carolina

Download or read book Perceived Leadership Practices of Female Superintendents in North Carolina written by Deardre J. Gibson and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the perceived leadership practices of North Carolina women school superintendents during the 2008-2009 school year. The study surveyed the female superintendents who were listed on the roster of N.C. superintendents published by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction for the 2008-2009 school year. Using the Leadership Practices Inventory Self Survey (Kouzes and Posner 1995) and a demographic questionnaire to gather descriptive statistics, the researcher used analysis of variance to assess the perceived leadership practices of female superintendents based on age, administrative experience, and size and structure of their districts. The findings indicated that neither age nor years of administrative experience had any impact on how North Carolina female superintendents perceived their leadership practices. All of the respondents were aged 50 or older and 77% were 55 or older. The respondents' average number of years of administrative experience was eight. The structure of the school district was found to be significant in regards to perceived leadership practices for N.C. female superintendents. District structure was defined as the ratio of central office personnel to the number of school buildings within the district. When the district structure was 1.59 or less, superintendents perceived themselves to utilize the leadership practice of Enabling Others to Act most often. The findings also indicated that the majority of N.C. female superintendents described effective leadership practices as having a shared vision and mission, setting goals, communication and having high expectations. The results of this study were compared to a similar study of female superintendents in four midwestern states conducted by Susan Katz in 2004. The female superintendents in both studies perceived themselves to utilize the leadership practice of Enabling Others to Act most often.

Book excerpt: A mixed method study using surveys and in-depth interviews was conducted with women school superintendents in four Midwestern states during the 1999-2000 school year to understand how they perceive their leadership skills, their uses of power in their positions, and how they generally talk about the job. Results of how the women perceived their leadership practices (Katz, 2004) and uses of power (Katz, in press) have been reported elsewhere. The purpose of this paper is to reveal analysis of unexplored data from the interviews of nine women superintendents who gave rich descriptions of the various aspects of their work lives particularly in the context of offering up advice to those women aspiring to the superintendency. Book The Gendering of Educational Leadership Styles

Download or read book The Gendering of Educational Leadership Styles written by Tiffany A. Perkins and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At the onset of this research, approximately 24.1% of superintendents in the United States and 15.7% of superintendents in North Carolina were women. These statistics indicate a national gap of 51.9 percentage points and a 68.6 percentage point gap in North Carolina for gender representation in the superintendency. To better understand the under representation of women in the superintendency, I studied the experiences of how female superintendents in North Carolina were/are being mentored, as well as how they have/are mentoring others. This study explored the mentoring experiences of seven female superintendents in North Carolina to determine the impact such experiences play in reproducing the gendering of leadership roles. The impact of mentoring experiences on subjectivity, agency, and women's access to the superintendency was also explored. Poststructural feminism served as the theoretical lens to inquire about practices that reinforce socially constructed beliefs which associate leadership styles with gender and the extent to which these may impact access for women to the superintendency. The results of the study not only contribute to recommendations for improving mentoring experiences and opportunities for women aspiring to the superintendency, but also identify ways that mentoring can support the work of both men and women in creating a more equitable system. The findings of the research suggest that current superintendents have immense power in women's access to the superintendency. As mentors, they can provide proteges with authentic job opportunities, model a variety of effective leadership practices and provide reflective and supportive discourse with and about proteges. Using these strategies positively impact the proteges subjectivity within educational leadership. The results also indicate that socially constructed patriarchal assumptions about leadership and gender are still deeply embedded and more work is needed to deconstruct these assumptions as they complicate women's access to and work within the superintendency."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book The American Superintendent 2020 Decennial Study

Download or read book The American Superintendent 2020 Decennial Study written by Christopher H. Tienken and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2020 AASA Decennial Study of the Superintendent is an extension of national decennial studies of the American school superintendent that began in 1923. The research was conducted in late 2019 and early 2020. The results are presented in various ways throughout the study, ranging from aggregate findings to two and three level crosstabs that disaggregate data by eight different enrollment categories. Just as findings from previous decennial studies suggested, the various job-related happenings of superintendents are not always homogeneous. They can be influenced by a multitude of factors such as district enrollment, demographic characteristics of the superintendents, and characteristics of the students and communities they serve.

Book Voices of Women Aspiring to the Superintendency

Download or read book Voices of Women Aspiring to the Superintendency written by Margaret Grogan and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1996-04-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The superintendency offers the most powerful and prestigious positions in K–12 public school systems. Few superintendents of these systems in the United States are women, although the majority of teachers are women and many women have leadership positions in schools. There are also increasing numbers of women in administrative preparation programs at institutions of higher education. This study of 27 highly qualified women in top-level administrative positions in public education was designed to find out what it is like to be a woman aspiring to the executive leadership position. Research questions included: Why are there so few women superintendents when so many are qualified? What are the routes to the superintendency? What is the context of educational administration in the public school? What kinds of leaders are women who aspire to the superintendency? The research was also informed by a femininst advocacy of social change to discover how and under what conditions a more equitable distribution of superintendencies is likely to occur. A feminist poststructural framework provided the theoretical basis for the analysis of the data.

A qualitative, multi-case study provided opportunity to determine the instructional leadership practices as viewed through the lens of instructional leadership research by Waters and Marzano (2006). Four overarching themes emerged: Professional development, focus of resources toward instruction, comprehensive knowledge of quality instruction, collaboration and communication. Findings indicated that the participating superintendent's practices were aligned to findings within current research. The instructional leadership characteristics identified within this study will serve as a model for superintendents and in establishing competencies for professional development activities surrounding instructional leadership.
