Book Challenges to American National Security in the 1990s

Download or read book Challenges to American National Security in the 1990s written by M. Nacht and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decade of the 1990s offers a chance to build a new and better international order. What policy choices will this decade pose for the United States? This wide-ranging volume of essays imaginatively addresses these crucial issues. The peaceful revolutions of 1989-1990 in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe have swept away the foundations of the Cold War. The Eastern European nations are free; Europe is no longer divided; Germany is united. The Soviet threat to Western Europe is ending with the collapse of the Warsaw Pact and the withdrawals and asymmetrical cuts of Soviet forces. And U.S.-Soviet rivalry in the Third World is giving way to cooperation in handling conflicts, as in Iraq and elsewhere. Much, of course, remains uncertain and unsettled. What sort of Soviet Union will emerge from the ongoing turmoil, with what political and economic system and what state structure? How far and how soon will the Eastern Euro pean states succeed in developing pluralist democracies and market economies? Are the changes irreversible? Certainly there will be turmoil, backsliding, and failures, but a return to the Cold War hardly seems likely.

Book National Security in the 1990s

Download or read book National Security in the 1990s written by Michael D. Rich and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is the text of a speech given at a luncheon co-sponsored by Town Hall of California and the Los Angeles Council of Engineers and Scientists, in Los Angeles, on February 19, 1991. The author describes the possible future geopolitical environment, the outlook for defense spending, and their implications for the defense industry. He identifies some characteristics of the post-Cold War era: (1) an increase in the likelihood of non-superpower crises; (2) more far-reaching destructive effects of disputes that were once limited in scope, as modern weapons are used; (3) an increased need for collective action--whether under the aegis of international organizations, multinational alliances, or ad hoc affiliations--to meet international problems; (4) the need for the United States to take a leading role in the creation of a new world security order; and (5) cooperation with more than the United States' traditional international partners. Finally, deliberations about longer-term security requirements should be dominated by two critical considerations: the formulation of a new national security strategy, and a strengthening of the industrial capability that supports our global military reach and influence.

Book Can America Remain Committed

Download or read book Can America Remain Committed written by David G. Haglund and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelve months that spanned the period between the early springtimes of 1991 and 1992 may well turn out to constitute the most important year for American foreign and security policy in half a century. Encasing the dawning of a new and different security era, like macabre parentheses, were two columns of black smoke-that of 1991 over the newly liberated Kuwait, and that of 1992 over the embattled district of South-Central Los Angeles. Within these acrid temporal brackets unfolded a set of developments of utmost significance for American foreign and security policy and for the very meaning of the country's external commitments.

Book Security Studies for the 1990s

Download or read book Security Studies for the 1990s written by Richard H. Shultz and published by Potomac Books. This book was released on 1993 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United States is grappling with a new security framework to replace the structure of the Cold War era. American policymakers face a host of challenges, including regional conflicts, ethnic tensions, and weapons proliferation, that commanded little attention in the past. And tomorrow is likely to bring new concerns barely on today's horizon." "Despite these changes, the study of national security remains largely a creature of the Cold War. The security studies discipline needs to be overhauled. But how should it be revised so that tomorrow's citizens and experts are equipped to understand and help manage new challenges?" "One option is to downgrade security studies and divert educational resources elsewhere. Another is to redefine the subject to include the study of an all encompassing list of international problems. The third choice is to retain basic definitions, concepts, and subjects, while also making significant adjustments. Security Studies for the 1990s addresses all three options." "This book is the first to reexamine security studies in the post-Cold War era. Scholars and directors from leading security studies programs representing a cross section of viewpoints on foreign affairs discuss what new material needs to be taught and which courses and concepts should be recast. Each chapter provides an indepth review of a major security studies course, proposing needed changes and a model syllabus. Subjects include intelligence policy, global environmental problems, the causes and termination of wars, and collective security. A chapter on the teaching of ethics, a subject often neglected in the past, is also featured."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book The Culture of National Security

Download or read book The Culture of National Security written by Peter J. Katzenstein and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The political transformations of the 1980s and 1990s have dramatically affected models of national and international security. Particularly since the end of the Cold War, scholars have been uncertain about how to interpret the effects of major shifts in the balance of power. Are we living today in a unipolar, bipolar, or multipolar world? Are we moving toward an international order that makes the recurrence of major war in Europe or Asia highly unlikely or virtually inevitable? Is ideological conflict between states diminishing or increasing?

Book National Security for a New Era

Download or read book National Security for a New Era written by Donald M. Snow and published by Longman Publishing Group. This book was released on 2004 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible and stimulating new book from renowned security scholar Donald Snow examines the United States' national security situation today and what policies the U.S. should adopt to confront it. National Security for a New Era is the first comprehensive examination of American national security policy since the events of 9/11 galvanized change. It starts from the premise that there have been two fundamental fault lines in national security policy over the past 15 years, the end of the Cold War and the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Each transformed security policy: the end of the Cold War ushered in the era of globalization for the 1990s, and 9/11 initiated a shift to a more traditional geopolitical view of the world for the early 2000s. The text attempts to place these traumatic events into the context of the prior American experience of the Cold War, traditional concerns over American interests, politics, and military problems, and to extend that experience into the future. Asymmetrical warfare, the Iraq war precedent, the neo-conservative challenge, state building, and the future reconciliation of globalization and geopolitics are all examined.

Book Is History Relevant Ideas for National Security Strategy in the 1990 s

Download or read book Is History Relevant Ideas for National Security Strategy in the 1990 s written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the unexpected byproducts of the United States' "victory" in the Cold War is a certain nostalgia for the old world order that crumbled so quickly. At least the nation knew where it stood in the post-World War II bipolar world. Today, the familiar guideposts are gone, and the national quest for new ones range as far back as the early 1900s. Is there a previous era that can tell us what to do now? While the answer to that question is "no," there are lessons and ideas from various segments of the United States' past that will stand the country in good stead as it develops a national security strategy for the 1990s. The first question to ask is as follows: What is the international environment in which this strategy will operate? The world power structure appears to be shifting to a more diffuse, multipolar configuration. The situation is still in flux, however, and at present the United States stands alone as the state with superpower status in all spheres. The USSR retains very substantial military power, but it is rapidly shedding its empire and is clearly not an economic power. Germany and Japan are struggling with the question of whether superpower status can be based on economic power along. The emergence of a unified Europe would change the equation again. If one narrows the focus to regional problems, various other states, including China, become necessary players. Despite its superpower status, the relative power of the United States globally has declined in the past 20 years. Conflict appears inevitable in the current environment, although much more likely on a regional rather than global scale. Whether it is good for the national character is arguable. Part of the reason conflict exists is that power remains the dominant factor in relations between states. But while the environment has changed, basic U.S. interests have not. Overall, the author believes the United States should follow a modified balance of power approach.
