Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Indian Orchard MA 00722 Connecticut River Basin Springfield Ludlow Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam is generally comprised of a 401-foot long, 10 to 28 foot high main spillway, a head gate building, an overflow canal spillway and a canal leading to two 8 foot diameter penstocks used in electrical power generation. There are two inoperable gates located in the main dam. The dam is normally operated with two feet of flashboards above the spillway crest. The visual inspection did not disclose any findings that indicate an immediate unsafe condition. The 1 /2 PMF test flood used will produce an inflow/outflow of 70,830 cfs. The dam is a run-of-the-river type and the spillway crest would be overtopped by about 14 feet. The spillway has a capacity of 29,500 cfs (42 percent of 1/2 PMF outlfow) at elevation 166.6, top of non-overflow section. The non-overflow section is overtopped by about six feet. This flow would not overtop the upstream training walls which are at elevation 174.0. The overall condition of the dam is considered fair due to the lack of adequate draw down capacity. Remedial measures consist of removing vegetation from the downstream face of the dam, further observation of seepage at the right abutment, repair the wooden crest cover, and develop a formal warning system to warn downstream areas in case of an emergency.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam is a 700 foot, 35 foot high earthfill embankment and a 920 foot long, 15 foot high earth-fill dike a gatehouse with outlet controls and a 10 foot wide concrete arch emergency spillway. With the water lever assumed to spillway crest at time of test flood, spilway discharge of about 30 cfs woudl occur. The reservoir woudl be surcharged to elevation 433, four feet above the spillway crest and two feet below the dam crest. The dam will not be overtopped. The dam is generally in fair condition. Remedial measures consist of removal of all brush and trees from the downstream slope of the main dam and spillway channel and repair of spalled and deteriorated concrete on the emergency spillway.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Hill Reservoir Dam MA 00064 Connecticut River Basin Pelham Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Hill Reservoir Dam MA 00064 Connecticut River Basin Pelham Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hill Reservoir Dam is a 47-year old earth embankment dam with a concrete core wall which impounds water for the Town of Amherst. Its crest is approximately 14 feet wide and 410 feet long. Both the upstream and downstream faces of the dam are sloped at 2H:1V. The entire dam is grass-covered, except for the upstream face, which is protected with random size loose riprap. The dam appears to be in fair overall condition. No signs of settlement, structural movement, or seepage through the dam or at any of the abutment ares were apparent at the time of the inspection. The most serious deficiencies concern the condition of the intake tower, the questionable operability of the presumed low level outlet, and the inaccessibility of the intake tower. The spillway appears to be in good condition. The test flood peak inflow to Hill Reservoir was computed to be 3,350 cfs. The test flood peak outflow was also computed to be 3,350 cfs and would result in a depth of flow over the dam of approximately 1.4 feet. The spillway, with the flashboards in place, has a discharge capacity of 810 cfs (24 percent of the routed test flood outflow) with the reservoir pool at the top of the dam. Assuming the flashboards are removed or fail prior to overtopping of the dam. Assuming the flashboards are removed of fail prior to overtopping of the dam, the spillway capacity is approximately 1,200 cfs, or 36 percent of the routed test flood outflow.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Provin Mountain Reservoir MA 00528 Connecticut River Basin Agawam Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Provin Mountain Reservoir MA 00528 Connecticut River Basin Agawam Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provin Mountain Reservoir is a series of four concrete storage reservoirs, averaging 30 feet deep, constructed on the ridge of Provin Mountain in Agawam, Massachusetts. Two of the concrete reservoirs are rectangular in shape and were constructed in 1910 and 1932, respectively. The first reservoir is 288 feet by 320 feet with a maximum height of 30 feet while the second reservoir is 288 feet by 224 feet with a maximum centerline depth of 38 feet. The two other concrete structures are circular and were added to the facility in 1958. These tanks are 29.5 feet in height and 320 feet in diameter. The total storage capacity of the four reservoirs is approximately 60 million gallons or 184 Acre-Feet. The structures are covered with earth and have stone paved side slopes. The following deficiencies were observed at the site: areas of localized sloughing in the rock slope of the east and west sides of Reservoir No. 1; minor creep with a tendency towards bulging in the lower half of the rock slopes of Reservoir No. 1; and seepage at the toe of the slope, northeast of Reservoir No. 2.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Ware Industries Main Upper Dam MA 00594 Connecticut River Basin Ware Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Ware Industries Main Upper Dam MA 00594 Connecticut River Basin Ware Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ware Industries Man (Upper) Dam consists of a main spillway 115 ft. long and approximately 34 ft. high, a spillway extension 50 ft. long and 4 ft. high, a concrete emergency spillway, a gate house with control works to a canal, and a 115 ft. long overflow weir from the canal. Based on a visual examination of the structure, the project is in good to fair condition. There was no evidence of structural failure or other conditions which would warrant urgent remedial action. The PMF outflow of 109,200 cfs would overtop the dam by 11.25 ft. With the water level at the top of dam, the spillway system can pass 7980 cfs which is 7.3 percent of the test flood.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Congamond Lakes North Dike MA 00072 Connecticut River Basin Southwick Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Congamond Lakes North Dike MA 00072 Connecticut River Basin Southwick Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congamond Lakes North Dike impounds North Pond which is one of the three ponds which make up the Congamond Lakes. All of the three ponds, North Pond, South Pond and Middle Pond are interconnected by culverts or bridges. Together the three ponds are approximately three miles long and up to one-third mile wide with a total surface area of about 465 acres. The North Dike was constructed to replace an earlier dike (which plugged an old canal) and which failed in 1955. The North Dike is approximately 80 feet long with a maximum height of 29 feet. The present condition of the dike is fair. There is no spillway nor regulating gates at North Dike. The present outlet for the lakes is at Middle Pond where Berkshire Avenue crosses Great Brook about 2 miles to the south of North Dike. During annual floods, the direction of flow in Great Brook reverses itself and flows back towards Congamond Lakes. The outlet structure at Berkshire Avenue has stoplogs which are inserted to prevent Great Brook from flooding back into the lakes. While the stoplogs are in place, Congamond Lakes has no outlet. After the flood stage of Great Brook recedes, the stoplogs are removed and Congamond Lakes are allowed to drain. The PMF inflow into Congamond Lakes, assuming that the stoplogs are in place at Berkshire Avenue would cause the lake level to rise to approximate elevation 232 MSL which is about 2 feet below the top of the dike.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Lower Roberts Meadow Reservoir Dam MA 00753 Connecticut River Basin Northampton Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Lower Roberts Meadow Reservoir Dam MA 00753 Connecticut River Basin Northampton Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lower Roberts Meadow Reservoir Dam is an earthfill embankment with a maximum height of 22.7 feet and a greatly curved crest, 550 feet long and 10 feet wide. A concrete and stone masonry spillway about 50 feet long, 14 feet high, and a freeboard of 9.3 feet is located near the northeast end of the embankment. Concrete and stone masonry training walls flank the spillay. A concrete low level intake structure with a manully controled slide gate is located about 180 feet west of the spillway. Phase I inspection and evaluation of the Lower Roberts Meadow Reservoir Dam does not indicate conditions which would constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. Based on engineering judgment and the performance of the earth embankment and the outlet works, the project is considered to be in good condition. The project has a number of deficiencies which, if not remedied, have the potential for developing into hazardous conditions. It is estimated that 23% of the PMF over the combined drainage area could be processed by the combined Middle and Lower Reservoir storage and spillway capacities without overtooping the Lower Dam.

It is small in size and has a high hazard potential classification.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Chicopee Reservoir MA 00720 Connecticut River Basin Chicopee Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Chicopee Reservoir MA 00720 Connecticut River Basin Chicopee Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicopee Reservoir Dam is a 545-foot long, 47-foot high earth embankment dam constructed circa 1926. The spillway is a 44-foot long ogee crest which si located at the right abutment of the dam and has a crest elevation (El) 168.0. The outlet conduits are a 24-inch cast-iron former water supply line and a 30-inch cast-iron blowoff. The following deficiencies were observed at the site: high degree of erosion of the principal spillway chute structure and outlet training walls; erosion gullies on the right abutment above the dam crest; brush growth on the downstream slope of the embankment; and seepage from the left abutment downstream of the dam. Generally, the dam is in fiar condition. The adopted spillway Test Flood is equal to the Probable Maximum Flood which yields a peak test flood inflow of 7565 cfs. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the spillway, without flashboards, with the water surface at the top of the dam can discharge 3,950 cfs which is less than the total routed test flood outflow of 6,450 cfs. Thus, the spillway can discharge 60% of the routed test flood outflow.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Northampton Reservoir Upper Dam MA 00521 Connecticut River Basin Whately Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Northampton Reservoir Upper Dam MA 00521 Connecticut River Basin Whately Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dam is a 940 foot long earth embankment dam with a concrete spillway. It is recommended that the areas of erosion both on the upstream and downstream faces where the abutments and embankment interface be repaired. Surface water in these areas should be redirected to prevent future erosion. The riprap on the upstream face should be extended to the dam's crest. The water exiting from the toe and core wall drains should be directed to a control channel and weir where the flow can be periodically measured. The 20-in capped pipe running beneath the dam to the downstream toe should be uncapped and extended to the lower reservoir. This will prevent the potential of a pressurized pipe (should the outlet gate be left open) from bursting and undermining the dam. Although the spillway can not discharge the test flood without overtopping the dam, the spillway capacity is comparatively large. Because of the hydrologic and safety relationships between this dam and the lower reservoir, it is necessary that future hydrologic studies concerning spillway capacities at either project should simultaneously encompass studies for both projects.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Leverett Pond MA 00525 Connecticut River Basin Leverett Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Leverett Pond MA 00525 Connecticut River Basin Leverett Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam is about 15 ft. wide, 6 to 8 ft. high by 15 ft. long earthfill structure having a 2 ft. wide concrete spillway chute passing through the approximate center. It is considered to be in poor condition. The spillway chute was observed to be blocked with debris and the embankment showed indications of continual erosion at the concrete fill interface. The dam in effect acts as a full width spillway. (Author).
