Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Fernwood Lake East Dam MA 01336 Fernwood Lake West Dam MA 01337 Massachusetts Coastal Basin Glouchester Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Fernwood Lake East Dam MA 01336 Fernwood Lake West Dam MA 01337 Massachusetts Coastal Basin Glouchester Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fernwood Lake is impounded by three separate earth embankment dams believed to have been built in 1877. (There is also a 325 ft. long South Dike separating a portion of the south end of the lake; however, it has a low hazard potential and thus was excluded from inspection.) East Dam is approximately 100 ft. long and has a maximum height of 5 ft. Its 8-in diameter outlet pipe has been blocked. West Dam is approximately 400 ft. in length and a maximum of 11 ft. in height. It has a 14-in. diameter low-level outlet. The main dam at the north end of the lake is 450 ft. in length, 19 ft. in height and has a 19 ft. long spillway crest. The main Fernwood Lake (North) Dam - MA 00184 was the subject of a previous Phase I Inspection Report dated April 1979. The East and West dams are both in poor condition, based on visual examination of the structures. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the test flood outflow of 370 cfs (inflow 475 cfs or 913 csm) would overtop East Dam by 0.5 ft. and that a freeboard of 1.5 ft. would remain at West Dam. (A freeboard of 1.6 ft. would remain at North Dam and South Dike would be overtopped by 0.3 ft.) With the water level at the top of East Dam, the spillway capacity at North Dam with flashboards in place is about 80 cfs or 22 percent of the peak test flood outflow.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams West Pond Outlet MA 00186 Massachusetts Coastal Basin Gloucester Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams West Pond Outlet MA 00186 Massachusetts Coastal Basin Gloucester Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impounding structure at West Pond is a 123-foot long, 12-foot high earthfill dam with an overflow spillway at the east abutment. The spillway is located at the east abutment of the dam and consists of a notched ungated concrete weir with an overall length of 16 feet. The low point on the top of the dam is lower than the unnotched portion of the spillway. Based on the visual inspection of the site and a review of the limited data available on the dam, the dam is considered to be in poor condition and is in need of extensive repair work. The following deficiencies were observed at the site: moderate seepage below the toe of the dam; severe erosion of the upstream slope exposing the core wall; erosion of the top and downstream slope of the dam, localized buldging along the downstream slope; lack of a low level outlet; separation of the training walls from the spillway; seepage around and beneath the spillway; brush, timber, and debris in the discharge channel; and trees and vegetation growing on the slopes of the dam. The peak test flood outflow of 107 cfs will overtop the dam by a maximum of 1.3 feet. The spillway can discharge only 1.1 percent of the test flood before the dam is overtopped.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Lake Mirimichi Dam MA 00168 Taunton River Basin Foxborough Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Lake Mirimichi Dam MA 00168 Taunton River Basin Foxborough Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Mirimichi Dam is a 620-foot long, 14-foot high earthfill dam including a ogee spillway. The 36.5-foot long, concrete spillway essentially bisects the dam. The outlet conduit is a 24-inch pipe located between the spillway and the right abutment of the dam. Flow through the conduit is controlled by two slide gates housed in a concrete chamber located in the embankment. The dam is in fair condition. The following are visible signs of distress: seepage just beyond the downstream toe of the dam and dike, growth of brush and trees on the dam and dike, erosion at several locations on the embankment, lack of adequate riprap protection on the upstream face of the dam and dike, corrosion of stems on the slide gates and spalled and cracked concrete on the weir and training walls of the spillway. The test flood would overtop the dike by about 2.2 feet, the dam by 0.8 foot, and a swale at the south end of the lake by 1.3 feet. The spillway can discharge only 17.5 percent of the test flood before the dike is overtopped.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Lee Pond Dam MA 00891 Massachusetts Coastal Basin Uxbridge Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Program

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Lee Pond Dam MA 00891 Massachusetts Coastal Basin Uxbridge Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Program written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lee Pond Dam consists of an earthen embankment with a natural spillway and a vertical stone masonry wall along two short sections of the downstream face. The embankment has a minimum top width of 15 ft. and a maximum height of 25 ft. The overall length of the dam is 870 ft., including the natural spillway at the right end of the dam which is about 15 ft. wide at normal pool elevation. The outlet works consist of an inoperable sluice gate located about 250 ft. from the left end of the dam. The dam impounds Lee Pond, which is used for recreational purposes. Maximum storage capacity at the top of dam is 220 acre-feet. Based on visual inspection and a review of all available pertinent data, the dam is considered to be in poor condition. Features that could effect the structural integrity of the dam are seepage at the downstream toe of the dam, erosion and slumping of dam slopes, extensive tree growth on the dam slopes and animal burrows on the crest and downstream face. The calculated test flood inflow of about 660 cfs results in a routed outflow of about 650 cfs. The spillway passes 100% of the test flood outflow with a freeboard of about 3 ft.

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Lake Whittemore Dam MA 00699 Connecticut River Basin Spencer Massachusetts Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Whittemore Dam is approximately 300 ft. long. It consists of a small earth embankment approximately 15 ft. high and an ungated concrete ogee spillway weir. The dam is generally in fair to good condition. There are no obvious signs of failure or conditions which would warrant urgent remedial treatment. Hydraulic analyses indicated that the spillway will pass the spillway design flood without overtopping the dam. The spillway design flood selected for this structure was the probable maximum flood. Recommendations for remedial work include clearing of trees and brush, repair of the downstream fieldstone wall and dry-laid stone wall adjacent to the gate valve, and minor earthwork and rip-rap repairs.
