Book Air Pollution and Its Impacts on U S National Parks

Download or read book Air Pollution and Its Impacts on U S National Parks written by Timothy J. Sullivan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A variety of air pollutants are emitted into the atmosphere from human-caused and natural emissions sources throughout the United States and elsewhere. These contaminants impact sensitive natural resources in wilderness, including the national parks. The system of national parks in the United States is among our greatest assets. This book provides a compilation and synthesis of current scientific understanding regarding the causes and effects of these pollutants within national park lands. It describes pollutant emissions, deposition, and exposures; it identifies the critical (tipping point) loads of pollutant deposition at which adverse impacts are manifested.

Book Protecting Visibility in National Parks and Wilderness Areas

Download or read book Protecting Visibility in National Parks and Wilderness Areas written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scenic vistas in most U.S. parklands are diminished by haze that reduces contrast, washes out colors, and renders distant landscape features indistinct or invisible. Protecting Visibility in National Parks and Wilderness Areas describes the current understanding of the nature and extent of haze in various regions of the United States. The book addresses the scientific and legal framework of efforts to protect and improve visibility, as well as methods for assessing the relative importance of anthropogenic emission sources that contribute to haze in national parks and for considering various alternative source control measures. The volume provides guidance on how to make progress toward the national goal of correcting and preventing visibility impairment due to human activities affecting large national parks and wilderness areas.

Book Air Quality Monitoring in the Northern Colorado Plateau Network

Download or read book Air Quality Monitoring in the Northern Colorado Plateau Network written by National Park Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Park Service Organic Act and the Clean Air Act protect air resources in national parks, and in 2005, the National Park Service's Northern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN) selected ozone, wet and dry deposition, and visibility as vital signs for long-term natural resources monitor-ing. Information relative to these three vital signs supports evaluation of compliance with legisla-tive requirements of the Clean Air Act's Regional Haze Guidelines and facilitates interpretation of plot-based vegetation and water-quality measurements. In 2010, the National Park Service's Air Resources Division published a nationwide report on air quality in national park units. This report expands on that information to provide a more comprehensive look at air quality in NCPN parks. Highlights from this report appear below.

The National Park Service mgmt. plan identifies threats to air quality and visibility -- incl. air pollution from the possible development of coal-fired power plants in the region. In 2004 and 2006, two companies each initiated the process to build new coal-fired power plants about 55 miles northwest of Great Basin National Park. These new power plants could adversely affect air quality and visibility in and around the park.
