Book APPALACHIAN LEAGUE BASEBALL

Download or read book APPALACHIAN LEAGUE BASEBALL written by Allen LaMountain and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baseball. The very word brings to mind summer days, a feeling of youthful exuberance, and rebirth. Baseball is nostalgic in its essence, and I hope that I have captured that feeling in this book. The stories of the rise of many young hopeful ballplayers who had the talent and drive to make it to the big leagues and in some cases rise to the very pinnacle of success is what prompted me to write their stories. Over the years of my stint covering the Appalachian League, I witnessed a great many players make it to “The Show.” If you are a fan of baseball, as I am, you will enjoy discovering the history of this talent-rich league as well as the biographies of the players and managers who passed through the Appy League on their way up the ladder. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I did writing it.

Book Rookies Rated

Download or read book Rookies Rated written by Warren N. Wilbert and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curt Davis is relatively unknown in today's baseball circles, but it should be remembered that he broke in with the Phillies in 1934 and put together, as this work proclaims, the greatest rookie season in the game's history. This unique book ranks and analyzes the 74 best freshman seasons in the history of organized baseball, from Davis's 1934 campaign to Nomar Garciaparra's 1997 season. The players are ranked according to a sabermetric analysis called Total Player Rating (TPR), which puts a numerical value on a player's overall contribution to his team's success in a given season. More precisely, the TPR represents the number of wins a player might have contributed beyond that of an average player in a given season. But rookies with high TPRs do not always win the Rookie of the Year Award; for example, in 1953 Jim Gilliam of the Dodgers did not make as valuable a contribution to Brooklyn's success as did Harvey Haddix to his St. Louis club, but Haddix finished a distant second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting.

Book The Cultural Encyclopedia of Baseball 2d ed

Download or read book The Cultural Encyclopedia of Baseball 2d ed written by Jonathan Fraser Light and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-03-25 with total page 1112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other sport, baseball has developed its own niche in America’s culture and psyche. Some researchers spend years on detailed statistical analyses of minute parts of the game, while others wax poetic about its players and plays. Many trace the beginnings of the civil rights movement in part to the Major Leagues’ decision to integrate, and the words and phrases of the game (for example, pinch-hitter and out in left field) have become common in our everyday language. From AARON, HENRY onward, this book covers all of what might be called the cultural aspects of baseball (as opposed to the number-rich statistical information so widely available elsewhere). Biographical sketches of all Hall of Fame players, owners, executives and umpires, as well as many of the sportswriters and broadcasters who have won the Spink and Frick awards, join entries for teams, owners, commissioners and league presidents. Advertising, agents, drafts, illegal substances, minor leagues, oldest players, perfect games, retired uniform numbers, superstitions, tripleheaders, and youngest players are among the thousands of entries herein. Most entries open with a topical quote and conclude with a brief bibliography of sources for further research. The whole work is exhaustively indexed and includes 119 photographs.
