Book National Integration in Indonesia

Download or read book National Integration in Indonesia written by Christine Drake and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2019-03-31 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia's great size and diversity and its history of regional dissension have made its struggle for national integration particularly complex. Christine Drake presents an informed and balanced picture of past and present developments in this struggle, offering readers a realistic assessment of the current status and future prospects of national integration in Indonesia. By addressing historical, political, social, and economic issues in conjunction with statistical analysis, Professor Drake argues that the spatial pattern of integration is far more complex than the commonly accepted core-periphery model of Indonesian integration and development. The author examines the effectiveness of Indonesian government policies in promoting national integration and concludes that in general they have led to greater national unity, although many serious problems remain.

Download or read book Black Identities written by Mary C. WATERS and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of West Indian immigrants to the United States is generally considered to be a great success. Mary Waters, however, tells a very different story. She finds that the values that gain first-generation immigrants initial success--a willingness to work hard, a lack of attention to racism, a desire for education, an incentive to save--are undermined by the realities of life and race relations in the United States. Contrary to long-held beliefs, Waters finds, those who resist Americanization are most likely to succeed economically, especially in the second generation.

Book Nationalism Democracy and National Integration in China

Download or read book Nationalism Democracy and National Integration in China written by Leong H. Liew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the changing role of nationalism in China in the light of the immense political and economic changes there during the 1990s. It analyses recent debates between the nationalists (New Left) and liberals in China and examines the roles played by state-sponsored and populist nationalism in China's foreign relations with the West in general and the USA in particular. The issues of Taiwanese nationalism and Tibet and Xinjiang separatism are discussed, with a focus on the questions of the impact of globalisation on national integration or fragmentation and the relationship between democracy and national integration - should democracy precede national integration or could democracy be realised only after national integration, or are democracy and national integration mutually exclusive objectives? The book also examines the roles played by the People's Liberation Army and fiscal system in China in promoting Chinese nationalism and national integration.

Book Regional Balance and National Integration in Cameroon

Download or read book Regional Balance and National Integration in Cameroon written by Paul Nchoji Nkwi and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a series of reflections by Cameroon scholars on a variety of topics associated with regional balance and national integration. The different reflections look for answers to some burning questions of the day such as: Where are we coming from? Where are we going? How are we going where we are going? Have the different state ideologies offered appropriate solutions to the quest for a strong, united, stable and prosperous nation-state? If not, what has gone wrong and why? What can be done to shape the future and accommodate the aspirations of the men and women of Cameroon and of their progeny? The book addresses the issue of national unity and national integration within the context of different political perceptions and visions. It examines the merits and demerits of the policy of regional balance of the Ahmadou Ahidjo years (1960-1982). Focus is also on the underlying flaws of this doctrine and philosophy. The debate also addresses some critical questions of the national integration policy and practices of Paul Biya, President since November 1982. The policy has failed to achieve its stated goals and has ended up in the ethnicisation and polarisation of national life. The future of the Cameroon nation-state, with its rich ethnic and cultural diversity, seems to be in jeopardy as internal forces question the management of civil society by leaders who have lost the sense of justice and equity. Why are there several voices singing the song of destitution and disappointment with the state? Have regionalism and the rhetoric of national integration and balance emerged as untenable polities within a nation-state in search of an identity and responsible leadership? These are some of the questions and issues Cameroonian and Cameroonist scholars have tried to address in this collection of 28 well-researched and outstandingly argued essays.

Book National Integration and Violent Conflict in Post Soviet Societies

Download or read book National Integration and Violent Conflict in Post Soviet Societies written by Pål Kolstø and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2002 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory presented in this work's predecessor, Nation-Building and Ethnic Integration in Post-Soviet Societies: An Investigation of Latvia and Kazakhstan (1999), fails to explain why the Dniester war of 1992 broke out in Moldova while Estonia remained free of large- scale violence. Kolsto (Russian and East European area studies, U. of Oslo, Norway) presents six contributions that revisit the question of when ethnic strife is likely to break out after the removal of authoritarian government. After reviewing candidates for explanatory theories, four country studies explore the evidence and one contribution discusses the international setting. The final chapter compares theory to evidence and concludes that theories of resources and opportunities available to various groups are better predictors of violence than theories of grievances and relative discriminations. Book Pakistan

Download or read book Pakistan written by Rounaq Jahan and published by University Press. This book was released on 1995-05-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study was widely acclaimed as the first definitive analysis of the disintegration of Pakistan and the birth of Bangladesh. It presents a scholarly explanation of why the policies of the Pakistani ruling elites, especially the policies and institutional innovations of the Ayub regime (1958 - 1968), which often seemed so promising to observers abroad, were in fact the prelude to the break up of Pakistan. The study shows that by emphasizing state building and economic growth and de-emphasizing nation building and development of political institutions, the Ayub regime created a crisis in political management. The Pakistani ruling elites' persistent refusal to allow democratic political institutions to function resulted in the exclusion of Bengalis from the national decision making process. The denial of their just claims led Bengalis to fight for autonomy initially and ultimately for independence." "The book, first published in 1972 by Columbia University Press, is being reprinted as part of UPL's Road to Bangladesh series. It will be of use to the new generation of readers to refresh memories about the failed policies and politics of the Pakistani ruling elites and the vision of democratic and secular politics for which the nationalist struggle was waged in Bangladesh."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
