Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Vol. 63: National Industries and the Federal Government; January, 1916 Unfair competition has long been a familiar term in the law, while unfair methods of competition are yet to be catalogued and described. The legal problems relating to unfair methods of competition are measurably new in the law. They are intricate and complex. Whether or not a code of business ethics will develop from the working out of section five of this law remains for the future. Book The Government Industrial Complex

Download or read book The Government Industrial Complex written by Paul C. Light and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his 1961 Farewell Address, President Eisenhower famously referred to the emergence of a "military-industrial complex" so powerful that it threatened to warp America's political institutions and economy. However, the military was not the only part of a blended government workforce that was growing by leaps and bounds. Over the next half century, the true size of the federal government expanded in almost every department and agency as it came to depend on 7-9 million federal, contract, and grant employees to faithfully execute the laws. In The Government-Industrial Complex, public management expert Paul Light not only traces the expansion of the federal government's workforce over the past few decades, but also explains why it has taken the shape that it has. In marked contrast to governments in other wealthy countries, America's relies heavily on contract and grant employees to deliver goods and services even as the number of federal employees has held steady for seventy years. Light traces the rise of this government-industrial complex and asks whether and how the nation can be sure that the right people are in the right jobs to assure maximum performance for the public good. To do this, he offers short histories of the roles of various presidents and the impacts of war and economic crisis on the changing size of government. He also highlights the Trump administration's early strategies on downsizing and deconstructing government. Light emphasizes that achieving the right balance between public and private responsibilities is the key to making government both more efficient and more responsive. Comprehensive and pointed, this is a landmark account of the true nature and scope of national governance in the United States.

Book excerpt: The United States already has an Industrial Policy, says Otis Graham in this timely, well-written book. It is composed of many sector-specific policies of the federal government (such as airline deregulation and tariffs on Asian textiles), along with similar policies adopted in numerous states. These amount to a national Industrial Policy, but one which is uncoordinated and often harmful.

Download or read book Forged Consensus written by David M. Hart and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thought-provoking book, David Hart challenges the creation myth of post--World War II federal science and technology policy. According to this myth, the postwar policy sprang full-blown from the mind of Vannevar Bush in the form of Science, the Endless Frontier (1945). Hart puts Bush's efforts in a larger historical and political context, demonstrating in the process that Bush was but one of many contributors to this complex policy and not necessarily the most successful one. Herbert Hoover, Karl Compton, Thurman Arnold, Henry Wallace, Robert Taft, and Curtis LeMay--along with more familiar figures like Bush--are among those whose endeavors he traces. Hart places these policy entrepreneurs in the broad scheme of American political development, connecting each one's vision of the state in this apparently esoteric policy area to the central issues, events, and figures of mid-century America and to key theoretical debates. Hart's work reveals the wide range of ideas, often in conflict with one another, that underlay what later observers interpreted as a "postwar consensus." In Hart's view, these visions--and the interests and institutions that shape their translation into public policy--form the enduring basis of American politics in this important area. Policymakers today are still grappling with the legacies of the forged consensus.
