Book Evaluating the National HIV Counseling and Testing CT Program of St Lucia

Download or read book Evaluating the National HIV Counseling and Testing CT Program of St Lucia written by Anjabebu S. Asrat and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents findings from an evaluation of the national HIV counseling and testing program of St. Lucia. The research methods used include: semi-structured interviews, written document analysis, record reviews, and participant observations. Findings from the study will support decision making to assist in the improvement and expansion of CT service provision in the country. The findings from this research provide evidence that there are many gaps in the national program. The major gaps include: 1) the lack of a full time coordinator to manage the CT program, 2) inadequate CT data collection, analysis, and use for decision making, 3) the absence of accurate denominator data (total tests conducted) from all sites providing CT services, 4) incomplete antenatal testing data, 5) absence of a training needs assessment or training plan, 6) shortages of personnel at all levels, 7) inadequate referral networks and linkages to support services for People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), 8) insufficient prioritization of the labs in all areas of planning, budgeting, personnel, renovations/refurbishments, training, and storage needs, 9) lack of adherence to national, regional, and international guidelines in rapid test use, 10) lack of evaluation of testing promotions and campaigns to determine reach, 11) inadequate space and infrastructure for CT service provision, and 12) insufficient inclusion of the private sector into all areas of the national program including dissemination of protocols, data collection forms, reporting structures, and training. Detailed and specific recommends are made to address each of the identified gaps. In summary, these recommendations are that: 1) a full time coordinator is recruited for the national level for oversight and coordination, 2) new data collection instruments and processes for recording and reporting CT are developed, 3) all facilities conducting testing are required and supported to report to the national level, 4) systems are put in place to capture pregnant women and ensure that they are tested, receive their results, and that these are reported accordingly, 5) training needs and a training plan are developed and used to identify and train relevant staff, 6) additional personnel are hired to meet all needs including lab personnel, 7) referral networks are strengthened to ensure a continuum of care for patients in need, 8) labs are included during planning processes, 9) national guidelines are disseminated, 10) promotional efforts are evaluated, 11) infrastructure for CT service provision are improved, and 12) the private sector is included into all areas of the national program.

Book Guide for Monitoring and Evaluating National HIV Testing and Counselling HTC Programmes

Download or read book Guide for Monitoring and Evaluating National HIV Testing and Counselling HTC Programmes written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding HTC services is a key activity for national programmes in order to achieving universal access to prevention, treatment and care. As services are scaled up and more resources are invested in HTC, national programmes must be able to establish standards, and ensure the quality of and coverage with HTC services among populations with the greatest need. An effective HTC programme will result in a larger number of people with HIV receiving an early diagnosis of, and care and treatment for, HIV. Focusing HTC services on those who are most vulnerable to acquiring HIV also presents an important opportunity for prevention counselling and referral to prevention services. As in any programme, achieving these objectives requires a minimum, reliable set of data to guide the efficiency and effectiveness of service implementation. The purpose of this guide is to describe a set of indicators that can be used by national AIDS programmes to monitor and evaluate their HTC services. The guide aims to be as comprehensive as possible including HTC indicators that are relevant to other areas of work where HTC is a key intervention, such as services for prevention of mother to child transmission and TB. Several of the indicators are new and require field testing, this is why the guide has been presented as a field test version and it will be revised following field testing of new indicators.

Book HIV Counseling and Testing Among Antenatal Clients in the Tropics

Download or read book HIV Counseling and Testing Among Antenatal Clients in the Tropics written by Elizabeth Ogboli-Nwasor and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on HIV counseling and testing (HCT) is an important resource for HIV prevention and care. The knowledge and acceptance of serostatus can facilitate behavioural change; enable access to strategies to reduce the risk of mother to child transmission of HIV, enable early access to care for HIV-related conditions; and help in making informed decisions about future pregnancies. This study was designed to find out the factors influencing uptake of Human Immuno-deficiency (HIV) counselling and testing (HCT) among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic in Sabon-Gari Comprehensive Health Centre, Zaria, Nigeria. A descriptive cross sectional survey was done. The fear of stigmatization is a factor militating against uptake of HCT. To improve the uptake of HCT services more innovative ethical and practical models of delivery should be developed and adopted. Improved awareness and education will reduce stigmatization of PLWHAS. This book is a must-read for all public health practitioners and maternal health care providers interested in working in Africa and in the tropics. It is also recommended for medical students and nurses who are seeking to broaden their knowledge on HCT.

Book HIV AIDS in South Africa 25 Years On

Download or read book HIV AIDS in South Africa 25 Years On written by Poul Rohleder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has happened since the first appearance of AIDS in 1981: it has been identified, studied, and occasionally denied. The virus has shifted host populations and spread globally. Medicine, the social sciences, and world governments have joined forces to combat and prevent the disease. And South Africa has emerged as ground zero for the pandemic. The editors of HIV/AIDS in South Africa 25 Years On present the South African crisis as a template for addressing the myriad issues surrounding the epidemic worldwide, as the book brings together a widely scattered body of literature, analyzes psychosocial and sexual aspects contributing to HIV transmission and prevention, and delves into complex intersections of race, gender, class, and politics. Including largely overlooked populations and issues (e.g., prisoners, persons with disabilities, stigma), as well as challenges shaping future research and policy, the contributors approach their topics with rare depth, meticulous research, carefully drawn conclusions, and profound compassion. Among the topics covered: The relationship between HIV and poverty, starting from the question, "Which is the determinant and which is the consequence?" Epidemiology of HIV among women and men: concepts of femininity and masculinity, and gender inequities as they affect HIV risk; gender-specific prevention and intervention strategies. The impact of AIDS on infants and young children: risk and protective factors; care of children by HIV-positive mothers; HIV-infected children. Current prevention and treatment projects, including local-level responses, community-based work, and VCT (voluntary counseling and testing) programs. New directions: promoting circumcision, vaccine trials, "positive prevention." South Africa’s history of AIDS denialism. The urgent lessons in this book apply both globally and locally, making HIV/AIDS in South Africa 25 Years On uniquely instructive and useful for professionals working in HIV/AIDS and global public health.

Book HIV Screening and Access to Care

Download or read book HIV Screening and Access to Care written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased HIV screening may help identify more people with the disease, but there may not be enough resources to provide them with the care they need. The Institute of Medicine's Committee on HIV Screening and Access to Care concludes that more practitioners must be trained in HIV/AIDS care and treatment and their hospitals, clinics, and health departments must receive sufficient funding to meet a growing demand for care.

Book Biomedical Advances in HIV Prevention

Download or read book Biomedical Advances in HIV Prevention written by Lisa A. Eaton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomedical Advances in HIV Prevention: Social and Behavioral Perspectives Lisa A. Eaton and Seth C. Kalichman, editors Three decades into the epidemic, a great deal is known about HIV and its transmission, more people are living with the disease, and the virus is no longer seen as a death sentence. But new people continue to be infected with HIV each year, making prevention strategies that are medically effective and behaviorally engaging as urgent a priority as ever. Biomedical Advances in HIV Prevention: Social and Behavioral Perspectives assembles the latest improvements, barriers to implementation, and possibilities for--and challenges to--future progress. Innovations such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (antiretroviral regimens for the high-risk uninfected) and treatment as prevention (early use of ART to reduce infectiousness of new patients) are examined, as are current findings on ongoing prevention and treatment concerns. Contributors illuminate the complex realities entailing adherence, pointing out technological, behavioral, and cultural roadblocks as well as opportunities to significantly reduce infection rates. Detailed up-to-the-minute coverage includes: Prevention services for persons living with HIV Adherence to HIV treatment as prevention and pre-exposure prophylaxis Advocating for rectal microbicides and safe lubricants Mental health and substance use in the scale-up of HIV prevention Risk compensation in response to HIV prevention Implementing biomedical HIV prevention advances: reports from South Africa, Uganda, Australia, Thailand, United States, Ecuador, and Peru Researchers, practitioners, and policy makers working in the fields of HIV/AIDS and public health will look toward Biomedical Advances in HIV Prevention: Social and Behavioral Perspectives as both a means for developing and assessing current programs and a blueprint for the next generation of prevention efforts.
