This book was released on 2010-03-19 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Forest project was established in 1995 with the aim of creating a new English forest across a 200 square mile area, embracing parts of Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire. The National Forest's purpose is to increase woodland cover to a third of The National Forest area, whilst demonstrating sustainable, multi-purpose land use, including growing timber, providing leisure and tourism facilities and developing natural habitats. Key features of The National Forest are its linkage of previously isolated ancient woodlands and the establishment of new nature reserves, as well as the provision of a framework for farm diversification and the regeneration of former coalfields. It is delivering tangible environmental, economic and social benefits to an area of the Midlands - much of which was suffering economic and environmental decline - through planting trees to create new woods and forests. Its achievement is not so much in trebling the proportion of land with tree cover to 18 per cent, but that, in so doing, it has helped to regenerate the local economy, open up the Forest to greater public use and improve the natural environment. The success has been built on the commitment and skills of all the partner organisations, and The National Forest Company has played a crucial leadership role to enable the project to deliver effectively the multiple benefits of forestry. There needs to be a systematic approach to disseminating the company's experiences so that lessons learned can be exploited across England.

Book Financial management report 2011

Download or read book Financial management report 2011 written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-11-25 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has made improvements in its financial management, the NAO cannot yet conclude that the Department is achieving value for money in its financial management activity. This is because the spending watchdog expected faster progress in improving performance since it last reported in 2008 and a higher level of financial maturity, given the resources spent and the focus on financial management. The Department has undertaken a number of projects designed to strengthen its financial management. These have had some positive results, such as revised management reporting and improved forecasting, although the Department has not fully assessed all the benefits of these projects. Despite increasing the number of permanent, qualified finance staff and also offering financial skills training courses for non-financial staff, there are still weaknesses in financial capability. Financial skills could also be better integrated across the Department. The Department should also focus on improving its commercial skills, such as contract management. It should also develop a strategic model for engagement with its arm's-length bodies, to understand the risks that they face and opportunities open to them. Since 2002, Defra has consistently underspent against its Parliamentary estimate. The underspend in 2010-11 was £530 million (10 per cent). The Department has, however, improved its management of expenditure against its departmental expenditure limit, reducing its underspend in 2010-11 to £34 million (one per cent of expenditure).

Book Forestry in the U S South

Download or read book Forestry in the U S South written by Mason C. Carter and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the second half of the twentieth century, the forest industry removed more than 300 billion cubic feet of timber from southern forests. Yet at the same time, partnerships between public and private entities improved the inventory, health, and productivity of this vast and resilient resource. A comprehensive and multilayered history, Forestry in the U.S. South explores the remarkable commercial and environmental gains made possible through the collaboration of industry, universities, and other agencies. This authoritative assessment starts by discussing the motives and practices of early lumber companies, which, having exhausted the forests of the Northeast by the turn of the twentieth century, aggressively began to harvest the virgin pine of the South, with production peaking by 1909. The rapidly declining supply of old-growth southern pine triggered a threat of timber famine and inspired efforts to regulate the industry. By mid-century, however, industrial forestry had its own profit incentive to replenish harvested timber. This set the stage for a unique alliance between public and private sectors, which conducted cooperative research on tree improvement, fertilization, seedling production, and other practices germane to sustainable forest management. By the close of the 1990s, concerns about an inadequate timber supply gave way to questions about how to utilize millions of acres of pine plantations approaching maturity. No longer concerned with the future supply of raw material and facing mounting global competition the U.S. pulp and paper industry consolidated, restructured, and sold nearly 20 million acres of forests to Timber Investment Management Organizations (TIMOs) and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), resulting in an entirely new dynamic for private forestry in the South. Incomparable in scope, Forestry in the U.S. South spotlights the people and organizations responsible for empowering individual forest owners across the region, tripling the production of pine stands and bolstering the livelihoods of thousands of men and women across the South.

Book Business in Post Communist Russia

Download or read book Business in Post Communist Russia written by Mikhail Glazunov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a widely held idea that Russia has completed its revolution which brought down the Soviet economy, and that many companies after privatisation work as typical western companies. Another belief is that Russia has adopted a market economy but then reverted to authoritarianism. With these two ideas in mind, this book discusses the suggestion that the key element of post-Soviet economic and political reforms in the last two decades was the redistribution of assets from the state to oligarchs and the new elite. It looks at why most Russian companies could not achieve strong long–run corporate performance by analysing in detail a range of different Russian companies. The book is a useful tool for understanding the future prospects for Russian business.
