Book The National Cyclopedia of the Colored Race Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Cyclopedia of the Colored Race, Vol. 1 For the past 20 yearn Negroes have been coming to the front so rapidly that to list all whose names should appear in a work of this kind would, I know, be impossible. As it is true of names and biographies, so is it true of the general data concerning the Negro race. Almost daily something happens or some new development in the race records itself as monumental and historical. All of this, I know the Editors cannot record; yet I am thoroughly convinced, from what I have seen of the Cyclopedia of the Colored Race, that this book will be of inestimable good to both the white people and the black people of America. It will be of service to the white people because it is the one work which gives a comprehensive knowledge of the Negro race, past and present. It will be of great service to the Negro for two reasons. In the first place it will be an advocate pleading his cause by setting forth his achievements under the most trying circumstances. It will show to the world that the American Negro is worthy not only of what he has achieved, but of an open door to much greater achievements and much kindlier treatment. In the second place it will teach the Negro more about himself. No Race, white or black, can get very far as a race or as individuals without a goodly amount of self-respect and race pride. Every biography, the story of every kind of property ownership, of a bank or store, owned and operated properly, will be a source of great inspiration to Negroes old and young. Were there no other reason, this one of valuable racial inspiration would more than justify the hard labor and careful thought that the publishers and editors have put into this work. Finally the public can rely upon the honesty and integrity of the men whose names appear as editors of the Cyclopedia. Here and there these men may err in fact, but in principle I do not believe there is a man on the list who can be doubted. I know all of them personally, a good many of them intimately. The editor in chief, Mr. Clement Richardson, his chief advisor Mr. E. J. Scott, Mr. J. R. E. Lee, Mr. N. B. Young, are all men who have rendered years of most valuable services on the staff at Tuskegee Institute. I commend this book highly to all Americans, with the hope that a perusal of it will bring a better understanding and a warmer spirit of friendship and inspiration, to both races. Over the next 400 years, as slavery spread and became entrenched in the Western Hemisphere, free blacks built communities throughout North and South America, playing a critical role in every region, colony, and country. From Canada to the Caribbean to Chile, they established vital economic and social institutions, championed the cause of abolition, and formed a bridge between the worlds of free whites and enslaved blacks. They worked as artisans, farmers, journalists, ministers, merchants, and shipbuilders. Never before and never since has such a group existed in large numbers anywhere in the world. Long shrouded in obscurity and overshadowed by scholarship on slavery and race, the free black community in the Americas has become a growing and vibrant field of study. Historians have recently uncovered vast material on this important group, revealing how they lived, how they shaped society, and how they transformed the history of every nation in the Western Hemisphere.Encyclopedia of Free Blacks and People of Color in the Americas is the first reference to cover this crucial subject and provides a wealth of information not available anywhere else. Nearly 400 signed articles cover every country, colony, state, city, and region in the Americas with a significant presence of free blacks, and biographies, thematic articles, and entries on related subjects shed additional light on this vital and fascinating topic."

Book Encyclopedia of African American History 1619 1895

Download or read book Encyclopedia of African American History 1619 1895 written by Paul Finkelman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-06 with total page 1556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is impossible to understand America without understanding the history of African Americans. In nearly seven hundred entries, the Encyclopedia of African American History, 1619-1895 documents the full range of the African American experience during that period - from the arrival of the first slave ship to the death of Frederick Douglass - and shows how all aspects of American culture, history, and national identity have been profoundly influenced by the experience of African Americans. The Encyclopedia covers an extraordinary range of subjects. Major topics such as "Abolitionism," "Black Nationalism," the "Civil War," the "Dred Scott case," "Reconstruction," "Slave Rebellions and Insurrections," the "Underground Railroad," and "Voting Rights" are given the in-depth treatment one would expect. But the encyclopedia also contains hundreds of fascinating entries on less obvious subjects, such as the "African Grove Theatre," "Black Seafarers," "Buffalo Soldiers," the "Catholic Church and African Americans," "Cemeteries and Burials," "Gender," "Midwifery," "New York African Free Schools," "Oratory and Verbal Arts," "Religion and Slavery," the "Secret Six," and much more. In addition, the Encyclopedia offers brief biographies of important African Americans - as well as white Americans who have played a significant role in African American history - from Crispus Attucks, John Brown, and Henry Ward Beecher to Olaudah Equiano, Frederick Douglass, Sarah Grimke, Sojourner Truth, Nat Turner, Phillis Wheatley, and many others. All of the Encyclopedia's alphabetically arranged entries are accessibly written and free of jargon and technical terms. To facilitate ease of use, many composite entries gather similar topics under one headword. The entry for Slave Narratives, for example, includes three subentries: The Slave Narrative in America from the Colonial Period to the Civil War, Interpreting Slave Narratives, and African and British Slave Narratives. A headnote detailing the various subentries introduces each composite entry. Selective bibliographies and cross-references appear at the end of each article to direct readers to related articles within the Encyclopedia and to primary sources and scholarly works beyond it. A topical outline, chronology of major events, nearly 300 black and white illustrations, and comprehensive index further enhance the work's usefulness.

Book South Carolina Negroes 1877 1900

Download or read book South Carolina Negroes 1877 1900 written by George Brown Tindall and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of African Americans in South Carolina after Reconstruction and before Jim Crow First published in 1952, South Carolina Negroes, 1877–1900 rediscovers a time and a people nearly erased from public memory. In this pathbreaking book, George B. Tindall turns to the period after Reconstruction before a tide of reaction imposed a new system of controls on the black population of the state. He examines the progress and achievements, along with the frustrations, of South Carolina's African Americans in politics, education, labor, and various aspects of social life during the short decades before segregation became the law and custom of the land. Chronicling the evolution of Jim Crow white supremacy, the book originally appeared on the eve of the Civil Rights movement when the nation's system of disfranchisement, segregation, and economic oppression was coming under increasing criticism and attack. Along with Vernon L. Wharton's The Negro in Mississippi, 1865–1890 (1947) which also shed new light on the period after Reconstruction, Tindall's treatise served as an important source for C. Vann Woodward's influential The Strange Career of Jim Crow (1955). South Carolina Negroes now reappears fifty years later in an environment of reaction against the Civil Rights movement, a a situation that parallels in many ways the reaction against Reconstruction a century earlier. A new introduction by Tindall reviews the book's origins and its place in the literature of Southern and black history.
