Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holidays are a key to helping us understand the transformation of national, regional, community and ethnic identities. In Celebrating Canada, Matthew Hayday and Raymond Blake situate Canada in an international context as they examine the history and evolution of our national and provincial holidays and annual celebrations. The contributors to this volume examine such holidays as Dominion Day, Victoria Day, Quebec’s Fête Nationale and Canadian Thanksgiving, among many others. They also examine how Canadians celebrate the national days of other countries (like the Fourth of July) and how Dominion Day was observed in the United Kingdom. Drawing heavily on primary source research, and theories of nationalism, identities and invented traditions, the essays in this collection deepen our understanding of how these holidays have influenced the evolution of Canadian identities.

Book Cajun Literature and Cajun Collective Memory

Download or read book Cajun Literature and Cajun Collective Memory written by Mathilde Köstler and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-12-19 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does Cajun literature, emerging in the 1980s, represent the dynamic processes of remembering in Cajun culture? Known for its hybrid constitution and deeply ingrained oral traditions, Cajun culture provides an ideal testing ground for investigating the collective memory of a group. In particular, francophone and anglophone Cajun texts by such writers as Jean Arceneaux, Tim Gautreaux, Jeanne Castille, Zachary Richard, Ron Thibodeaux, Darrell Bourque, and Kirby Jambon reveal not only a shift from an oral to a written tradition. They also show hybrid perspectives on the Cajun collective memory. Based on recurring references to place, the texts also reflect on the (Acadian) past and reveal the innate ability of the Cajuns to adapt through repeated intertextual references. The Cajun collective memory is thus defined by a transnational outlook, a transversality cutting across various ethnic heritages to establish and legitimize a collective identity both amid the linguistic and cultural diversity in Louisiana, and in the face of American mainstream culture. Cajun Literature and Cajun Collective Memory represents the first analysis of the mnemonic strategies Cajun writers use to explore and sustain the Cajun identity and collective memory.

Book Coming Home

Download or read book Coming Home written by Alfred J. Hudon and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-12-04 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seemed they werent too pleased to have a new man in Bathurst cutting in on their illegal business activities. As for me, there were only two issues I was concerned about, one was their involvement in private security work. Besides Jim I was fortunate to have another friend, Frenchie, a police officer who usually kept me up-to-date as to what was happening around the police station. One evening, after a break-in at a Canadian Tire store, I received a call from Frenchie saying that I should check Sgt. Levines car because he had four new tires on, which he said came from the break-in. I wasnt surprised to hear that because back in the latter part of the seventies and into the mid-eighties, it was said, and not only by Frenchie, that a number of police officers were being accused of some sort of theft. As for me checking out the tires on Sgt. Levines vehicle, I wasnt interested because I had my own problems to concentrate on. Furthermore if the tires had come from a break-in that was a police matter.

Book The Acadians

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Laxer
  • Publisher : Anchor Canada
  • Release : 2010-05-14
  • ISBN : 0385672896
  • Pages : 346 pages

Download or read book The Acadians written by James Laxer and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2010-05-14 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evocative and beautifully written history of some of Canada’s earliest settlers, and their search for a definitive home. In 1604, a small group of migrants fled political turmoil and famine in France to start a new colony on Canada’s east coast. Their roughly demarcated territory included what are now Canada’s Maritime provinces, land that was fought over by the British and French empires until the Acadians were finally expelled in 1755. Their diaspora persists to this day. The Acadians is the definitive history of a little-known part of the North American past, and the quintessential story of a people in search of their identity. In the absence of a state, what defines an Acadian is elusive and while today’s Acadian community centred in New Brunswick is more confident than ever, it is entering a contentious debate about its future. James Laxer’s compelling book brilliantly explores one of Canada’s oldest and most distinct cultural groups, and shows how their complex, often tragic history reflects the larger problems facing Canada and the world today.

Book Canada Through American Eyes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how Canada is imagined primarily by US writers, and what readers and scholars on both sides of the Canada-US border can learn from these recent depictions by examining a selection of US-authored fiction from 9/11 to the present. The novels — and occasionally paintings, films, and musicals — that are the subject of the book provide a deliberately varied set of case studies to probe how US texts, along with works of art produced on both sides of the Canada-US border, uncover moments in Canadian historical and literary studies that have been buried or occluded to protect Canada's self-representation as an exceptional nation.
