Download or read book Art and the Nation State written by Róisín Kennedy and published by . This book was released on 2021-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art and the Nation State is a wide-ranging study of the reception and critical debate on modernist art from the foundation of the Irish Free State in 1922 to the end of the modernist era in the 1970s. Drawing on art works, media coverage, reviews, writings and the private papers of key Irish and international artists, critics and commentators including Samuel Beckett, Thomas MacGreevy, Clement Greenberg, James Johnson Sweeney, Herbert Read and Brian O'Doherty, the study explores the significant contribution of Irish modernist art to post-independence cultural debate and diverging notions of national Irish identity. Through an analysis of major controversies, the book examines how the reputations of major Irish artists was moulded by the prevailing demands of national identity, modernization and the dynamics of the international art world. Debate about the relevance of the work of leading international modernists such as the Irish-American sculptor, Andrew O'Connor, the French expressionist painter, Georges Rouault, the British sculptor Henry Moore and the Irish born, but ostensibly British, artist Francis Bacon to Irish cultural life is also analysed, as is the equally problematic positioning of Northern Irish artists.

Book Messines to Carrick Hill

Download or read book Messines to Carrick Hill written by Thomas Burke and published by Mercier Press Ltd. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is structured around a collection of letters written by a nineteen year old Irish officer in the 6th Royal Irish Regiment, 2nd Lieutenant Michael Wall from Carrick Hill, near Malahide in north Co. Dublin. Michael was educated by the Christian Brothers in Dublin and destined to study science at UCD before being seduced by the illusion of adventure through war. By contextualising and expanding the content of Wall's letters and setting them within the entrenched battle zone of the Messines Ridge, Burke offers a unique insight into the trench life this young Irish man experienced, his disillusionment with war and his desire to get home. Burke also presents an account of the origin, preparations and successful execution of the battle to take Wijtschate on 7 June 1917 in which the 16th (Irish) and 36th (Ulster) Divisions played a pivotal role. In conclusion Burke offers an insight into the contentious subject of remembrance of the First World War in Ireland in the late 1920s

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the centuries, many artists have been captivated by the unique light and landscape of Greece; from early cartographers to the impressionistic responses of the late nineteenth century, the Greek scene has continued to exert its fascination. This very personal anthology of depictions of Greece explores the changing attitude of travelers to Greece from medieval to modern times. A number of the selections relate to the historic events surrounding the War of Independence, including Lord Byron’s participation in it, which led to his death. Particular emphasis is given to the German painters of the 1830s and their pupils, who are comparatively little known in the English-speaking world. Framed by a text describing the relationship of artists to Greece, these images evoke the many moods of the country. The book is enhanced by succinct comments on the illustrations, a biographical index of the artists featured, and an introduction that discusses the development of the painterly approach to Greece.

Book excerpt: One of the most accomplished and internationally celebrated artists of the eighteenth century, Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807) established her reputation with sensitive portraits as well as ambitious history paintings. This major study explores the artist's work and career by considering how Kauffman reconciled the public and presumed masculine pursuit of painting with her role as woman artist and arbiter of private taste. Featuring a wealth of new information, this illustrated book demonstrates Kauffman's role in shaping European visual culture, shedding new light on the history of women artists and on art history as a critical discipline.

Book Negative Space

Download or read book Negative Space written by Cristín Leach and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This searingly intimate literary debut from top Irish art critic Cristín Leach weaves words and art with an unravelling of self that comes when a marriage breaks. In a series of layered essays, art critic Leach writes about the gaps between reality and perception, about writing and anxiety, body and brain, breaking and making, succeeding and failing, conventionality and independence. The non-linear structure of the essays, with repeats, retakes, and deliberately unsaid or missing information, mimics the gaps in memory and understanding that are part of the human condition, especially during times of great stress. It’s about art and writing as a fundamental way of explaining and understanding the world, perhaps saying what cannot be said, or revealing without showing. Negative Space is a memoir about writing as a salve and a means of escape, marriage as a refuge and a trap, the nature of home, and what happened when everything fell apart.
