Book excerpt: "Natanz” is a fast-paced story, involving cockpit power-plays, engine failures, near misses, and international intrigue. Tom is a skilled executive jet pilot working for an obnoxious boss. Threatened with the sack for canceling a charter when the senior pilot freezes during a near miss, almost killing them all, he resigns and purchases a struggling charter company. Sinking all he has into the venture, he struggles to build the company, while his relationship with his cabin attendant girlfriend is falling apart. When Tom foils an attempt on the life of one of his new customers, saving his crippled plane from a seemingly unrecoverable loss of control, he becomes the target of the would-be assassin. Recovering from the attempt on his life, he is approached by the CIA to fly a defecting scientist from Iran under the guise of a charter flight. Against his better judgment he accepts the mission and flies into Iran. On the flight out, he declares an emergency, and drops below radar height, landing at night on a country road to affect the pick up. For the next three hours, he must fly at low level, avoiding searching aircraft. Discovered, and fired upon, his aircraft is badly damaged and crashes in Saudi Arabia. Tom is trapped in the burning wreck, convinced he is about to die. Reviews: 'If you like John Nance aviation books, you won't be disappointed!' 'Fast-paced, tightly-written, page-turner for anyone who likes aviation-related stories.' 'This is, without a shadow of doubt, the best flying book I've ever read. Could not put it down and even woke up at night to read a chapter. Much better than Tom Clancy who I find to be pedantic.' read the sequel. Well done.

Book excerpt: A top cybersecurity journalist tells the story behind the virus that sabotaged Iran’s nuclear efforts and shows how its existence has ushered in a new age of warfare—one in which a digital attack can have the same destructive capability as a megaton bomb. “Immensely enjoyable . . . Zetter turns a complicated and technical cyber story into an engrossing whodunit.”—The Washington Post The virus now known as Stuxnet was unlike any other piece of malware built before: Rather than simply hijacking targeted computers or stealing information from them, it proved that a piece of code could escape the digital realm and wreak actual, physical destruction—in this case, on an Iranian nuclear facility. In these pages, journalist Kim Zetter tells the whole story behind the world’s first cyberweapon, covering its genesis in the corridors of the White House and its effects in Iran—and telling the spectacular, unlikely tale of the security geeks who managed to unravel a top secret sabotage campaign years in the making. But Countdown to Zero Day also ranges beyond Stuxnet itself, exploring the history of cyberwarfare and its future, showing us what might happen should our infrastructure be targeted by a Stuxnet-style attack, and ultimately, providing a portrait of a world at the edge of a new kind of war.

Book excerpt: The most successful film franchise of all time, Star Wars thrillingly depicts an epic multigenerational conflict fought a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. But the Star Wars saga has as much to say about successful strategies and real-life warfare waged in our own time and place. Strategy Strikes Back brings together over thirty of today's top military and strategic experts, including generals, policy advisors, seasoned diplomats, counterinsurgency strategists, science fiction writers, war journalists, and ground‑level military officers, to explain the strategy and the art of war by way of the Star Wars films. Each chapter of Strategy Strikes Back provides a relatable, outside‑the‑box way to simplify and clarify the complexities of modern military conflict. A chapter on the case for planet building on the forest moon of Endor by World War Z author Max Brooks offers a unique way to understand our own sustained engagement in war-ravaged societies such as Afghanistan. Another chapter on the counterinsurgency waged by Darth Vader against the Rebellion sheds light on the logic behind past military incursions in Iraq. Whether using the destruction of Alderaan as a means to explore the political implications of targeting civilians, examining the pivotal decisions made by Yoda and the Jedi Council to differentiate strategic leadership in theory and in practice, or considering the ruthlessness of Imperial leaders to explain the toxicity of top-down leadership in times of war and battle, Strategy Strikes Back gives fans of Star Wars and aspiring military minds alike an inspiring and entertaining means of understanding many facets of modern warfare. It is a book as captivating and enthralling as Star Wars itself.

Book Enemies of the Ayatollahs

Download or read book Enemies of the Ayatollahs written by Mohammad Mohaddessin and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens in post-war Iraq may well be decided by what happens in Iran. In this powerful account of its theocratic regime, the author pays particular attention to the Iranian factor in the 2003 Iraq war, and the likely impact of the continuation of the mullahs' regime and its tendency to interfere in its neighbour's affairs. He reveals startling new information about Iran's continued links with fundamentalist Islamic organizations abroad, the pursuit of its nuclear ambitions, and its ongoing use of terrorism against its own opponents - all of which justify a high level of international concern. The author argues that, in contrast to the ruling regime, the main Iranian opposition is essentially democratic, nationalist and in favour of a separation of religion and state. He raises fundamental questions about Islamic fundamentalism, and sets out a liberating, compassionate, tolerant and democratic version of Islam which can hold out hope for the Middle East as a whole.

Book Iran s Perilous Pursuit of Nuclear Weapons

Download or read book Iran s Perilous Pursuit of Nuclear Weapons written by David Albright and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Institute of Science and International Security’s new book Iran’s Perilous Pursuit of Nuclear Weapons chronicles the Islamic Republic of Iran’s efforts to build nuclear weapons. The book draws from original Iranian documents seized by Israel’s Mossad in 2018 in a dramatic overnight raid in Tehran. The “Nuclear Archive” allows deep insight into the country’s effort to secretly build nuclear weapons. The book relies on unprecedented access to archive documents, many translated by the Institute into English for the first time. The first part of the book concentrates on Iran’s crash nuclear weapons program in the early 2000s to build five nuclear weapons and an industrial complex to produce many more. By 2003, responding to growing pressure from European powers to freeze its publicly known nuclear programs and fearing a possible U.S. military attack, Iran’s leaders decided to downsize, but not stop, their secret nuclear weapons effort. The second part of the book discusses Iran’s nuclear path post-2003, revealing a careful plan to continue nuclear weapons work, overcome bottlenecks and better camouflage nuclear weapons development activities. Since 2003, the Islamic Republic’s nuclear scientists and weaponeers have concentrated on establishing capabilities to make weapon-grade uranium and developing more reliable, longer-range ballistic missiles."--Publisher description.
