Book The Military Memoir and Romantic Literary Culture 1780 1835

Download or read book The Military Memoir and Romantic Literary Culture 1780 1835 written by Neil Ramsey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the memoirs and autobiographies of British soldiers during the Romantic period, Neil Ramsey explores the effect of these as cultural forms mediating warfare to the reading public during and immediately after the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. Forming a distinct and commercially successful genre that in turn inspired the military and nautical novels that flourished in the 1830s, military memoirs profoundly shaped nineteenth-century British culture's understanding of war as Romantic adventure, establishing images of the nation's middle-class soldier heroes that would be of enduring significance through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As Ramsey shows, the military memoir achieved widespread acclaim and commercial success among the reading public of the late Romantic era. Ramsey assesses their influence in relation to Romantic culture's wider understanding of war writing, autobiography, and authorship and to the shifting relationships between the individual, the soldier, and the nation. The memoirs, Ramsey argues, participated in a sentimental response to the period's wars by transforming earlier, impersonal traditions of military memoirs into stories of the soldier's personal suffering. While the focus on suffering established in part a lasting strand of anti-war writing in memoirs by private soldiers, such stories also helped to foster a sympathetic bond between the soldier and the civilian that played an important role in developing ideas of a national war and functioned as a central component in a national commemoration of war.

Book The English Dane

Download or read book The English Dane written by Sarah Bakewell and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2005 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jorgen Jorgenson was a Dane who made Britain his adopted country. Restless for adventure and inspired by his hero Captain Cook, he came to London, and at twenty-three was among the small party who established a new colony - Tasmania. Amid many twists of fortune, he captained a ship for France against Britain, but then sailed with British traders to Iceland. This was his long-dreamed of moment of glory: staging an outrageous coup, for two months he ruled Iceland, proclaiming it free from Danish rule, its ancient rights restored. He was not yet thirty. Much lay ahead, including imprisonment in the hulks, patronage by Joseph Banks, and travels in Europe as a British spy. But Jorgenson was always dogged by his own excesses. Inevitably he spiralled downwards, until he was transported as a convict to Tasmania, the very colony he helped to found. Here he rose again. He bacame an explorer, cutting through the bush on desperate missions in icy mountains and across flooded rivers; and despite his sympathy for the people, he was caught up in the terrible Aboriginal clearances, described here." "Sarah Bakewell tells this tale using unpublished sources and letters. The odyssey she describes, crossing the world from island to island, illuminates the murky workings of British power while it also reveals her hero's charisma and painful self-division."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: A study of the one man who in himself summed up and embodied the greatness of the possibilities which Sea Power comprehends, --the man for whom genius and opportunity worked together, to make him the personification of the Navy of Great Britain...The name of Nelson is enrolled among those few presented to us by History, the simple mention of which suggests, not merely a personality or a career, but a great force or a great era concrete in a single man, who is its standard-bearer before the nations

Book Bhotan and the Story of the Dooar War

Download or read book Bhotan and the Story of the Dooar War written by David Field Rennie and published by . This book was released on 1866 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dooar (or Duār) War of 1864-65 began as an attempt by the authorities in British India to annex from Bhutan the territory known as Duārs in order to stop what they claimed were incursions into India from Bhutan. David Field Rennie, who participated in the conflict as a military surgeon, wrote this book on his four-month voyage back to England. Bhutan, which is located at the eastern end of the Himalaya mountain range, was at that time one of the world's most isolated countries. Rennie's intention was to make Bhutan and its people better known in Europe. His work contains an account of the war and observations on the geography, history, people, and languages of the country. As a consequence of the war, Bhutan was forced to cede Duārs to British India. Duārs now constitutes a portion of the states of Assam and West Bengal in India. The book contains a large-scale foldout map of Bhutan.
