Book Escape Escapism Escapology

Download or read book Escape Escapism Escapology written by John Limon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Escape, Escapism, Escapology: American Novels of the Early Twenty-First Century identifies and explores what has emerged as perhaps the central theme of 21st-century American fiction: the desire to escape-from the commodified present, from directionless history, from moral death-at a time of inescapable globalization. The driving question is how to find an alternative to the world within the world, at a time when utopian and messianic ideals have lost their power to compel belief. John Limon traces the American answer to that question in the writings of some of the most important authors of the last two decades-Chabon, Diaz, Foer, Eggers, Donoghue, Groff, Ward, Saunders, and Whitehead, among others-and finds that it always involves the faux utopian freedom and pseudo-messianic salvation of childhood. When contemporary novelists feature actual historical escape, pervasively from slavery or Nazism, it appears in their novels as escape envy or escape nostalgia-as if globalization like slavery or Nazism could be escaped in a direction, from this place to another. Thus the closing of the world frontier inspires a mirror messianism and utopianism that in US novels can only be rendered as a performative, momentary, chiasmic relationship between precocious kids and their ludic guardians.

Book The Escapist

Download or read book The Escapist written by Gabriel Filippi and published by HarperCollins Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survival comes at a price In The Escapist, one of Canada’s foremost mountaineers, Gabriel Filippi, shares a life spent in and out of the Death Zone and proves an old axiom true: no climber returns from a summit the same person as when he began his ascent. The Escapist is an unflinching account of extreme feats and devastating loss that takes you to six continents as Filippi dissects both what it takes to get to the top of the world, and what that quest takes out of you. Over the course of twenty years spent scaling the world’s highest peaks, Filippi has repeatedly cheated death. From a Taliban attack on a mountainside in northern Pakistan that felled ten of his climbing companions to the deadliest disaster in Everest’s history, Filippi has survived again and again. A story about human perseverance and triumph in the pursuit of one man’s dreams, The Escapist helps to explain why some people will never give up on trying to climb to the top of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the National Jewish Book Award · New York Times Bestseller "A brilliant and heart-wrenching book, with universal and timely lessons about the power of information—and misinformation. Is it possible to stop mass murder by telling the truth?" — Yuval Noah Harari, bestselling author of Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind and Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow A complex hero. A forgotten story. The first witness to reveal the full truth of the Holocaust . . . Award-winning journalist and bestselling novelist Jonathan Freedland tells the astonishing true story of Rudolf Vrba, the man who broke out of Auschwitz to warn the world of a truth too few were willing to hear. In April 1944, Rudolf Vrba became one of the very first Jews to escape from Auschwitz and make his way to freedom—among only a tiny handful who ever pulled off that near-impossible feat. He did it to reveal the truth of the death camp to the world—and to warn the last Jews of Europe what fate awaited them. Against all odds, Vrba and his fellow escapee, Fred Wetzler, climbed mountains, crossed rivers, and narrowly missed German bullets until they had smuggled out the first full account of Auschwitz the world had ever seen—a forensically detailed report that eventually reached Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and the Pope. And yet too few heeded the warning that Vrba had risked everything to deliver. Though Vrba helped save two hundred thousand Jewish lives, he never stopped believing it could have been so many more. This is the story of a brilliant yet troubled man—a gifted “escape artist” who, even as a teenager, understood that the difference between truth and lies can be the difference between life and death. Rudolf Vrba deserves to take his place alongside Anne Frank, Oskar Schindler, and Primo Levi as one of the handful of individuals whose stories define our understanding of the Holocaust.

Book Sidewalks in the Kingdom The Christian Practice of Everyday Life

Download or read book Sidewalks in the Kingdom The Christian Practice of Everyday Life written by Eric O. Jacobsen and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians often talk about claiming our cities for Christ and the need to address urban concerns. But according to Eric Jacobsen, this discussion has remained far too abstract. Sidewalks in the Kingdom challenges Christians to gain an informed vision for the physical layout and structure of the city. Jacobsen emphasizes the need to preserve the nourishing characteristics of traditional city life, including shared public spaces, thriving neighborhoods, and a well-supported local economy. He explains how urban settings create unexpected and natural opportunities to initiate friendship and share faith in Christ. Helpful features include a glossary, a bibliography, and a description of New Urbanism. Pastors, city-dwellers, and those interested in urban ministry and development will be encouraged by Sidewalks in the Kingdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all have free will, and are answerable for our actions, but when our most important life decisions are based on childhood brainwashing, abuse, mis-information, and societal pressures, we are destined to make some poor decisions. Should we be forced to suffer for these poor decisions our entire life, or do we have the right to escape from those bad decisions, even if it causes distress for others. The author says yes, we do. We have a right to change the course of our lives such that we free ourselves to pursue the correct path that leads us to happiness and fulfillment. This is the theme of Escaping the Plantation. The plantation in this case being the marriage, corporation, government or religious group that demands we slave for them with little or no reward, and seeks to punish us if we refuse. Only by removing ourselves from the plantation can we ever hope to be truly free. And so that is what we must do. Escape. That is the theme of the five short stores contained herein. The first and last are true and are based on the authors personal experience. The other three are mostly fictional but are representative of the predicaments many of us find ourselves in. I'm sure you will enjoy all five and benefit from them. Steve Walker

Book The Transcendent Vision of Mythopoeic Fantasy

Download or read book The Transcendent Vision of Mythopoeic Fantasy written by David S. Hogsette and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-07-22 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ever-expanding critical library on fantasy fiction requires an analysis of why the genre is so ubiquitous, enduring and beloved. This work analyzes the mythic elements in foundational fantasy texts, arguing that mythopoeic fantasy reveals timeless truths that link human cultures past and present. Through close readings of works like Phantastes, The King of Elfland's Daughter, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, A Wizard of Earthsea, The Neverending Story, A Wrinkle in Time and Out of the Silent Planet, this book explores how mythopoeic fantasy speaks to the deepest concerns of the human heart. It investigates the genre's use of an imagination that is sometimes atrophied by the demands of contemporary life, and explores how fantasy provides restoration, consolation and hope within a cultural context that too often decries such ideas. Each chapter focuses on a representative text, providing author background and engaging relevant scholarship on a variety of relevant thematic issues. Offering new insights on these classic texts by drawing upon post-secular critical approaches, this work is suitable for both new and seasoned students of fantasy.
