Book No Way to Treat a Child

Download or read book No Way to Treat a Child written by Naomi Schaefer Riley and published by Bombardier Books. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kids in danger are treated instrumentally to promote the rehabilitation of their parents, the welfare of their communities, and the social justice of their race and tribe—all with the inevitable result that their most precious developmental years are lost in bureaucratic and judicial red tape. It is time to stop letting efforts to fix the child welfare system get derailed by activists who are concerned with race-matching, blood ties, and the abstract demands of social justice, and start asking the most important question: Where are the emotionally and financially stable, loving, and permanent homes where these kids can thrive? “Naomi Riley’s book reveals the extent to which abused and abandoned children are often injured by their government rescuers. It is a must-read for those seeking solutions to this national crisis.” —Robert L. Woodson, Sr., civil rights leader and president of the Woodson Center “Everyone interested in child welfare should grapple with Naomi Riley’s powerful evidence that the current system ill-serves the safety and well-being of vulnerable kids.” —Walter Olson, senior fellow, Cato Institute, Robert A. Levy Center for Constitutional Studies

Book Narratives of Neglect

Download or read book Narratives of Neglect written by Jacqui Karn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the process leading up to the demolition of a small council estate in the north of England and its subsequent regeneration. Based on extensive ethnographic research, it addresses the local governance of security and the ways in which the community engaged with attempts to improve the 'quality of life' of its residents and to attract wealthier new residents in the future. It explores in particular the meaning of notions of 'social capital' and 'partnerships' which often take little account of local power dynamics, seeking rather to find ways of mobilizing popular support for enforcement and exclusion rather than drawing on local knowledge of problems. In following the process of consultation with residents this book explores the levels of miscommunication across social divides, and the differing narratives of change produced by residents and professionals. Residents' narratives display an important interplay between constitution of identity, community, sense of security, attribution of blame and ascription of responsibility for dealing with local problems explored in this book through detailed analysis of case studies. In the final section of the book the author puts forward an alternative vision for participatory urban governance, bringing together notions of justice, rights, inclusion and sustainability.

She never went to school or the doctor, and rarely glimpsed sunlight. Desperately malnourished, she couldn't talk and had never been toilet-trained. The social worker who took her into care had never heard of a case so horrific. The doctors believed Dani would never recover from such a terrible start in life. Then she met the Lierows - a unique, blended family who were seeking to adopt a child. Despite being warned that she was way beyond hope of a normal life, they were instantly drawn to her and sensed a bright light behind her pale complexion. When they finally adopted her, they showered Dani with so much affection and encouragement that she came to life for the first time. Proving all the experts wrong, Dani would go on to open up and express herself in a way that no-one could have expected. Dani's remarkable and heartwarming story is a testament of the power of kindness to overcome even the most seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our current era of helicopter parenting and stranger danger, an unaccompanied child wandering through the city might commonly be viewed as a victim of abuse and neglect. However, from the early twentieth century to the present day, countless books and films have portrayed the solitary exploration of urban spaces as a source of empowerment and delight for children. Fantasies of Neglect explains how this trope of the self-sufficient, mobile urban child originated and considers why it persists, even as it goes against the grain of social reality. Drawing from a wide range of films, children’s books, adult novels, and sociological texts, Pamela Robertson Wojcik investigates how cities have simultaneously been demonized as dangerous spaces unfit for children and romanticized as wondrous playgrounds that foster a kid’s independence and imagination. Charting the development of free-range urban child characters from Little Orphan Annie to Harriet the Spy to Hugo Cabret, and from Shirley Temple to the Dead End Kids, she considers the ongoing dialogue between these fictional representations and shifting discourses on the freedom and neglect of children. While tracking the general concerns Americans have expressed regarding the abstract figure of the child, the book also examines the varied attitudes toward specific types of urban children—girls and boys, blacks and whites, rich kids and poor ones, loners and neighborhood gangs. Through this diverse selection of sources, Fantasies of Neglect presents a nuanced chronicle of how notions of American urbanism and American childhood have grown up together.

I was begging for some milk. She told me there was no milk and I started to cry. She told me to stop crying but I couldn't and she slapped me in the mouth. Even though I still cried I didn't get hit again. I was four years old at the time. I'm fourteen now and I can remember so many times I've been hit, kicked, slammed against the wall, and beat with a belt buckle. His is the first of eight short stories outlining abuse and neglect experienced by African American youth. This book is unique in that it is told from the perspective and in the voice of these youths. It is an important guide for caregivers, social workers, school personnel, and mental health professionals to assist in the healing process of youth who are victims of child abuse and neglect. Development of the trauma narrative is among the keys to effective treatment of victims of child maltreatment. To assist with the building of the trauma narrative short stories reflecting physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and domestic violence are presented. This books' goal is to educate and facilitate this process by providing examples of traumatic exposure experienced by the silent majority of abuse and neglect victims. It is ultimately intended as a tool that gives a voice to youth of color who are often overlooked in the abuse and neglect literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a true story of child abuse and neglect. It's not a novel. It's an actual diary, kept day-by-day, documenting what neighbors witnessed, and a mother who was out of control. What would you do if you heard child abuse in the apartment next door, night after night? What if the police and state agencies couldn't protect a three-year-old from his sick and twisted mother, and the father who claimed he slept through it all? This real-life diary tells the true story of Kevin. It's one of the worst true child abuse stories, told by Kevin's next-door neighbor. In this book, you'll read what happened, day by day, as the legal system failed this little boy. Don't expect a "happily ever after" novel. In this book, you'll read an actual diary as it was written during more than a year of child neglect and abuse. As the tragedy unfolded, it took its toll on everyone involved... including those who knew what was going on and couldn't stop it. It's a harsh plea for increased child abuse awareness. "What Happened to Kevin" contains the full text of two true child abuse stories -- "Momma, Don't Hit Me!" and "Momma, Stop! I'll Be Good!" -- published separately. This book tells what happened to a little boy named Kevin, between November 2011 and May 2013. (Previously published as "Kevin's Story.")

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SUMMARY: SONGS OF NEGLECT Songs of Neglect is a passionate book that centres on a certain African culture that does not value orphans, widows, commoners, girl child and inputs from children or youths, but believes strongly that old age with grey hairs, mostly from royalty, can speak wisdom that can save the people. They believed that children and youths must grow to their ages before they have a say in life. Green, a young boy, was faced with battered experiences in life, such that he gets angry and wants to fight with death. Though he couldn't hold it concretely, he stubbornly enslaved his heart, rejecting peace, smiles, friendship and happiness because his father and mother died without nursing him. His aged grandmother, full of promises about life who later took care of him, followed the same route immediately. So he was thrilled to partner with tombs, rats, cockroaches, crickets, lizards and birds in the silent cemetery where he visited often and slept. Despite his stubbornness, Green was blessed with wisdom, knowledge and intelligence. His credibility in matters exposed him to a lonely chief who had similar experiences in life, though not as young as the young death hunter. The older man was sure of his bright future, so he tried as much as he could to lure Green out of death experiences. Finally, his curiosity to speak with his late parents and grandmother after several years of deafening silence exposed him to smiles preached by them. However, royalty invaded Green's territory such that "songs of neglect" could not be sung as usual as he challenges and changed ancient narratives and could deliver help, smiles, freedom and justice to widows, orphans, commoners, slaves, girls, women, children and youths before he sits on the throne as a ten-year-old boy.
