This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of Voyages and Commercial Enterprises, Vol. 1 of 2 The character of the citizens of New England for enterprise and industry is very generally acknowledged. Being, for the most part, obliged to seek their own fortunes, they are early accustomed to the endurance of privations, and to those industrious and frugal habits, which lead to competence and wealth. In the pursuit of that independence of which all are more or less desirous, there have been instances of daring enterprise, of persevering determination, of disregard of fatigue a. d suffering, which are very remarkable; but which pass unobserved from their frequency, no less than from the unobtrusive habits of the actor. A simple account of such enterprises, drawn from journals and letters written at the time the events therein related occurred, is here given to the public. More than forty-five years have elapsed since the first of the voyages here narrated was undertaken; and more than twenty since the completion of the last. Book Life With the Esquimaux Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Life With the Esquimaux Vol 1 of 2 written by Charles Francis Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life With the Esquimaux, Vol. 1 of 2: The Narrative of Captain Charles Francis Hall of the Whaling Barque "George Henry," From the 29th May, 1860, to the 13th September, 1862 As this book is to be a work of narrative and adventure, and not one of argument and discussion, I shall touch but very lightly upon those subjects which might lead to the latter, while I endeavour to give as much variety and as much fulness of detail as possible to the former. That argument and discussion may arise from portions of what I advance is very probable but, if so, it will be better to enter upon such in another form than this. Readers very naturally expect to be entertained, as well as, perchance, instructed in what a voyager or traveller puts before them. Long, prosy dissertations are seldom wanted. All that most people require is a truthful report of personal doings in strange lands, and a faithful record of incidents, discoveries, and interesting events connected with them. Such, then, is the task I have taken in hand, with the hope that a ready excuse will be granted for all those imperfections necessarily consequent upon the mode and manner of my carrying on the work in which I was engaged. I pledge myself as to the literal accuracy of what I state, and my readers will be able to see, as they move onward with me through my narrative, how difficult it was - alone, and with no other pair of hands, no other mind, no other thought, sense, or perception but my own - to record, day by day, the occurrences that came under my eye. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mardi, Vol. 1 of 2: And a Voyage Thither At length, dead before the equatorial breeze, we threaded our way straight along the very Line itself. Westward sailing, peering right and peering left, but seeing naught. It was during this weary time that I experienced the first symptoms of that bitter impatience of our monotonous craft, which ultimately led to the adventures herein recounted. Book A Voyage Round the World 2 vols

Download or read book A Voyage Round the World 2 vols written by George Forster and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Forster's A Voyage Round the World presents a wealth of geographic, scientific, and ethnographic knowledge uncovered by Cook's second journey of exploration in the Pacific (1772-1775). Accompanying his father, the ship's naturalist Johann Reinhold Forster, on the voyage, George proved a knowledgeable and adept observer. The lively, elegant prose and critical detail of his account, based loosely on his father's journal, make it one of the finest works of eighteenth-century travel literature and an account of prime importance in the history of European contact with Pacific peoples. The Forsters' publications reveal the sophistication and enthusiasm they brought to their observation of Polynesian peoples as well as a sensitivity to the moral ambiguities of contact. The two volumes of George Forster's work include substantially richer descriptions of encounters with island inhabitants than either his father's classic work (Observations Made during a Voyage round the World, UH Press, 1996) or Cook's official narrative, and its confident, even visionary, style incorporates a good deal of polemic, particularly in its criticism of the treatment of islanders by Cook's crew. In addition to the range and depth of its anthropological considerations, it provides a thrilling account of life aboard one of Cook's vessels. In its author's German translation, this work becomes a classic of natural history writing, but its original English version has long been neglected by anglophone scholars. This new scholarly edition makes this important book readily available for the first time since its initial publication more than two centuries ago. But it also presents the work in fresh terms, making it more accessible and relevant to a contemporary audience. The valuable introduction and annotations draw on the wide range of anthropological and ethnohistorical scholarship published since the 1960s and contextualize the book in relation to both the cultures of Oceania documented by the Forsters and the history of European voyaging in the Pacific. Appendixes include a translation of the introduction to the German edition and the polemical pamphlets by George Forster and the ship's astronomer William Wales, in which some of the book's more controversial claims were debated. A Voyage Round the World brings the disciplines of history and anthropology to bear on Cook's voyages in an illuminating and readable fashion. This edition will help complete the corpus of basic documents on Cook's voyages--a crucial resource for researchers in cultural, Pacific, and maritime history; archaeologists, anthropologists, and art historians; and most recently for scholars engaged in revisionist interpretations of eighteenth-century exploration and colonization.
