Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of a Tour in North America, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprising Mexico, the Mines of Real Del Monte, the United States, and the British Colonies; With an Excursion to the Island of Cuba IN venturing to submit the following Work to public notice, the Author is by no means influenced by the vain ambition of seeing himself in print, but is induced by the higher motive of endeavouring to do justice to a much-abused and slandered people, Whose fate it has hitherto been to be mis represented by those who ought to have cherished the very opposite feeling. The voyage across the Atlantic was undertaken for the purpose of re-establish ing a state of health somewhat impaired, as also of visiting the only quarter of the globe which the writer had not seen; and in order to behold, among the wonders of the New World, the magnificent Cataract of Niagara. Download or read book Mexico in the Time of Cholera written by Donald Fithian Stevens and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This captivating study tells Mexico’s best untold stories. The book takes the devastating 1833 cholera epidemic as its dramatic center and expands beyond this episode to explore love, lust, lies, and midwives. Parish archives and other sources tell us human stories about the intimate decisions, hopes, aspirations, and religious commitments of Mexican men and women as they made their way through the transition from the Viceroyalty of New Spain to an independent republic. In this volume Stevens shows how Mexico assumed a new place in Atlantic history as a nation coming to grips with modernization and colonial heritage, helping us to understand the paradox of a country with a reputation for fervent Catholicism that moved so quickly to disestablish the Church.

Book excerpt: However urban slave societies might have differed from their rural counterparts, they still relied on a concerted assault on the psychological, social, and cultural identity of their African-descended inhabitants to maintain power and control. This ambitious book looks at how people of African descent in two such societies--Havana and New Orleans in the nineteenth century--created and maintained their own forms of cultural resistance to the slave regime's assault and, in the process, put forth autonomous views of sell and the social landscape. In Havana's annual Dia de Reyes festival and in the weekly activities that took place at New Orleans's Congo Square, author Daniel Walker identities specific cultural beliefs and activities that Africans brought to the New World and modified in order to withstand and contest the dehumanizing effects of oppression. "No More, No More crosses disciplinary boundaries as well, elucidating the economic, social, cultural, and demographic operations at work in two cities and the wide-scale efforts at cultural resistance embodied in public performances.
