Book Narrative of a Journey Into Khoras n

Download or read book Narrative of a Journey Into Khoras n written by James Baillie Fraser and published by . This book was released on 1825 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Baillie Fraser left his native Scotland for India in 1813. After a short and unsuccessful stint working in a trading business in Kolkata (Calcutta), in 1815 he joined his brother William Fraser on an expedition to find the sources of the Jumna and Ganges rivers. He documented the trip in Journal of a Tour through Part of the Snowy Range of the Himālā Mountains, published in 1820. A skilled artist who produced sketches and acquatints of different parts of India, in 1821 Fraser accompanied Dr. Andrew Jukes of the East India Company on a diplomatic mission to Persia. Jukes died in Isfahan in late 1821, but Fraser continued the journey, visiting Tehran, Mashhad, Tabriz, and other cities before returning to London. This book is Fraser's account of his voyage through Khorasān, a historical region that includes parts of present-day Iran, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan. It contains detailed information about the peoples of the region and their customs, religious practices, and forms of government. Appended to the main work is a lengthy "Geographical Sketch of the Principal Districts of Khorasan," with descriptions of the countryside and of towns such as Herat, Afghanistan. At the end are listed the route and travel distances from Mashad to Herat, Herat to Kabul, Kabul to Balkh, and between various other points. Also included are several tables with geographic and meteorological data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of a Journey Into Khorasan, in the Years 1821 and 1822: Including Some Account of the Countries to the North-East of Persia; With Remarks Upon the National Character, Government, and Resources of That Kingdom So many works relating to Persia have of late years appeared before the public, that some account may be expected of the motives for bringing forward another volume upon the same subject. The author when he determined to travel in Persia, resolved also to devote all the time he could command, to exploring new tracts, and thus to exert his best ability in adding to the information already before the public, rather than to follow in the course of former travellers. With this object in view he proposed to himself to leave the beaten track as soon as possible, and as the country to the east of Tehran had not been visited by Europeans for many years, he selected it as a fit field of enquiry; and purposed to proceed through Khorasan, by such route as might promise to be most interesting, to Bockhara and Samarcand, or even further to the eastward, as circumstances might suggest or admit. With the wish of rendering this journey as useful as possible, he supplied himself with the best instruments that India could afford, for taking astronomical observations to fix the latitude and longitude of the various places through which he should pass; and these, as will be seen in the sequel, were constantly and assiduously employed. Download or read book The Pursuit of Pleasure written by Rudolph P. Matthee and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From ancient times to the present day, Iranian social, political, and economic life has been dramatically influenced by psychoactive agents. This book looks at the stimulants that, as put by a longtime resident of seventeenth-century Iran, Raphaël du Mans, provided Iranians with damagh, gave them a "kick," got them into a good mood. By tracing their historical trajectory and the role they played in early modern Iranian society (1500-1900), Rudi Matthee takes a major step in extending contemporary debates on the role of drugs and stimulants in shaping the modern West. At once panoramic and richly detailed, The Pursuit of Pleasure examines both the intoxicants known since ancient times--wine and opiates--and the stimulants introduced later--tobacco, coffee, and tea--from multiple angles. It brings together production, commerce, and consumption to reveal the forces behind the spread and popularity of these consumables, showing how Iranians adapted them to their own needs and tastes and integrated them into their everyday lives. Matthee further employs psychoactive substances as a portal for a set of broader issues in Iranian history--most notably, the tension between religious and secular leadership. Faced with reality, Iran's Shi`i ulama turned a blind eye to drug use as long as it stayed indoors and did not threaten the social order. Much of this flexibility remains visible underneath the uncompromising exterior of the current Islamic Republic.
