Book Memoirs and Narratives of Canadian and American Convicts Sent to Australia

Download or read book Memoirs and Narratives of Canadian and American Convicts Sent to Australia written by Professor Howell and published by Howell & Xie. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few Canadians and Americans, let alone Australians, would realize that Canadians and Americans were among those transported as convicts to Australia. Their collective name was known as the ‘Canadian Patriots’, or ‘Patriotes’, and there might have been up to 200 of them. These were among the Canadian ‘rebels’ who fought against the British crown 1837-1838. The French from Lower Canada never did accept British rule, for after all it was a colony of France before the British defeated France on the Plains of Abraham at Quebec City. Then there were many well-meaning Americans who wanted to get rid of the British. The rebellions against the British were easily defeated, the Patriots lacking the discipline and organisation of the British troops. The Canadians were essentially made up of two groups: * First, there were the ‘rebels’ from Upper Canada, which is now the province of Ontario, and were mainly British Canadians and Americans who joined the rebellion. They were sent to Van Diemen’s Land. * Second, there were the ‘rebels’ from Lower Canada, now the province of Quebec, and these were in the main French Canadians. They were disembarked for five days at Hobart Town and then sent on to Sydney. Within five years most had either won pardons or had escaped. Overall, they were more highly educated than the normal convict, and many wrote of their experiences. We are particularly knowledgeable about the Canadian convicts who were on the HMS Buffalo 1839-1840, though some came on other ships. On board the Buffalo were eighty-two American patriots who had crossed the border through sympathy with the anti-British rebellion, fifty-eight were French prisoners from Lower Canada, and five were civil prisoners. Three French and nine English Canadians and Americans wrote memoirs or narratives of their experiences in Australia. Selections from these narratives are presented to show how they were treated, most would say as slaves.

Book excerpt: Being an Irish man was a consistent, contentious issue in the Canadas. The aim of this book is to provide the firstgendered examination of male Irish migration to Upper and Lower Canada withinthe broader contexts of negative stereotypes about Irish violence and Irishmen'squestionable loyalty to the British Empire. Through examinations of key violent episodes and (in)famous individuals,Violent Loyalties argues that beingan Irishman in the Canadas meant daily negotiations with discrimination, ethnicrivalries, the pressure to become more 'British', and having to base one'ssense of manliness on being the most visible 'other' in the colonies. Irish Catholics faced the burden of beingdual minorities - the 'other' religion within the Anglophone world andEnglish-speaking in the Catholic sphere already established byFrench-Canadians. Irish Protestants alsohad difficulties adapting to their new communities, as the problematicassociation with violent Orangeism and rivalries with Scottish and Englishimmigrants, many of whom were United Empire Loyalists, created obstacles in thequest for upward social mobility. BothCanadian and Irish historiographies are sorely lacking in examinations ofmasculinity compared with those investigating American, French, Australian, orBritish manliness. This gap in theliterature becomes even more apparent outside of a twentieth-centuryfocus. Violent Loyalties aims to fill these lacunae in thehistories of colonial Canada and the Irish diaspora.

Book The Lives and Times of the Patriots

Download or read book The Lives and Times of the Patriots written by Edwin C. Guillet and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1968-12-15 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lives and Times of the Patriots was first published in 1938, the centennial of the Upper Canadian Rebellion and the subsequent Patriot raids over the border from the United States. The Canadian part of the agitation for constitutional and social reform, long a subject of controversy and bitterness, is now generally considered to be, as Sir Wilfrid Laurier put it, a fight "for constitutional rights, not against the British Crown"; but very little in the American movement, allegedly in sympathy, can be justified, its aims and conduct being no better than—and often interior to—the Fenian Raids of some thirty years later. The story of the events and their consequences is unfolded from a wide coverage of source materials, and described from both Tory and Reform, Loyalist and Patriot point of view. Exciting trails and escapes from jails and forts follow one another in quick succession, and the lives and experiences of participants are traced around the world to the prison colony of Van Diemen's Land and home again, as diaries, letters, and narratives tell their story, supplemented and verified by official documents, contemporary newspapers, obituary notices, and tombstone inscriptions. Rare illustrations complement this careful account of what must be taken to be, with all its deficiencies, a notable episode in the history of human freedom.

Book Canadian State Trials Volume II

Download or read book Canadian State Trials Volume II written by F. Murray Greenwood and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2002-12-15 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of the Canadian State Trials series focuses on the largest state security crisis in 19th century Canada: the rebellions of 1837-1838 and associated patriot invasions in Upper and Lower Canada (Ontario and Québec). Historians have long debated the causes and implications of the rebellions, but until now have done remarkably little work on the legal aspects of the insurrections and their aftermath. Given that over 350 men were tried for treason or equivalent offences in connection with the rebellions, this volume is long overdue. The essays collected here, written by prominent Canadian historians, legal scholars, and archivists, break new ground in the existing historiography of the rebellions by presenting the first comprehensive examination of the legal dimensions of the crises. In addition to examining trials and court martial proceedings, the essays examine their political, social, and comparative contexts, including the passage of emergency legislation and executive supervision of legal responses, the treatment of women, and the plight of political convicts transported to the Australian penal colonies. Canadian State Trials, Volume Two contributes significantly to the ongoing reassessment of the rebellion period.
