Book Puerto Rican Mothers of Children Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Factors that Impact the Treatment Seeking Process

Download or read book Puerto Rican Mothers of Children Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Factors that Impact the Treatment Seeking Process written by Lilliam Martinez and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although researchers have focused a vast amount of research on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with diverse groups, few have addressed specific ethnic groups such as Puerto Ricans. This study explored the concerns of Puerto Rican mothers of children diagnosed with ADHD. This research addressed how factors such as acculturation and cultural beliefs within Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Model impacted the process that Puerto Rican mother experienced while obtaining treatment for their children diagnosed with ADHD. Utilizing a qualitative research method and Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model, the narratives of ten mothers of Puerto Rican descent with children between the ages of 7–11 were questioned. The questions consisted of semi-structured interviews to assess how culture and acculturation within an ecological system impacted the process of obtaining mental health services by Puerto Rican mother's children for their children diagnosed with ADHD. The results yielded eight themes that were embedded within Bronfenbrenner's Ecological System's theory that emphasized the importance of how Puerto Rican culture and acculturation level impacted the process of obtaining services. The mothers narratives exposed the barriers and the fears they faced as Puerto Rican mothers with children diagnosed with ADHD within the Unites States. Recommendation supported the need to address the barriers and fears that Puerto Rican mothers faced as they sought treatment for their children diagnosed with ADHD. Future research suggest further exploration of this research to empower this population and enhance the process to obtain treatment.

Book ADHD and Maternal Resiliency

Download or read book ADHD and Maternal Resiliency written by Patricia E. Neff and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increased prevalence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) among Canadian and American children has introduced a surge in 'self-help' books marketed toward mothers. The perceived necessity for this has been shored up by scholarly and popular belief that raising an ADHD child is a stressful, burdensome and over-whelming responsibility. The perception is that these mothers are in need of advice and guidance in order to rise to the challenge. ADHD, marked by impulsivity, inattention and hyperactivity, is frequently misinterpreted as a result of poor mothering despite professional efforts to define it as a biologically predetermined disorder independent of socialization. Despite professional allegiance to the biological definition of the disorder, much academic focus has been directed toward discovering maternal pathology and dysfunction. This book provides a much needed counter perspective to current stereotypes about mothers of ADHD children as ill-quipped or pathological. Relying on large-scale quantitative data, Patricia E. Neff provides a detailed analysis of the impact of raising an ADHD child, as compared to a non-ADHD child, on maternal well-being. This is the first book of its kind to address the subject of mothering an ADHD child using two nationally representative and cross-cultural samples of Canadian and American mothers and children. A unique picture of how Canadian and American mothers are influenced by the ADHD status of their child, as well as their child's behavior and use of medication is revealed. This research is also concerned with the role of social support in mediating the effects of ADHD on maternal well-being. While numerous studies have examined the influence of social support in families of children experiencing an illness or handicap, this is the first to systematically explore the utilization of social support among mothers of ADHD children. According to Neff, the use of small, homogenous and clinically referred samples has contributed to negative characterizations of mothers of ADHD children. This is a timely piece of work as ADHD is now the most frequently diagnosed and treated disorder among school age children across Canada and the United States. ADHD and Maternal Resiliency provides a critical new perspective on mothering an ADHD child that will be of interest to sociologists, psychologists, clinicians, and educators, as well as mothers and families of ADHD children. Recommendations are advanced to increase research efforts toward gaining a greater understanding of the strengths and resources which enable mothers to successfully cope with the associated difficulties of mothering an ADHD child.

Book Acculturation Cultural Values and Latino Parental Beliefs about the Etiology of ADHD

Download or read book Acculturation Cultural Values and Latino Parental Beliefs about the Etiology of ADHD written by Kathryn E. Lawton and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent mental health disorders of childhood, but despite the availability of several evidence-based interventions, Latino children are more likely than non-minority children to have an unmet need for services related to ADHD. Because parental beliefs about the etiology of ADHD likely influence which services are sought, more research is needed to examine this aspect of help-seeking behavior in order to address the unmet need among Latino families. Specifically, research needs to focus on cultural factors that likely influence parental beliefs about the etiology of child behavior problems. Thus, the goal of the current study was to investigate the role of acculturation and cultural values of familismo, respeto, spirituality, and traditional gender roles in explaining parental etiological beliefs about ADHD in Latino parents. Participants in this study included 74 Latino parents. After watching a video portraying a Latino child exhibiting core symptoms and common functional problems associated with ADHD, parents completed a semi-structured interview that assessed etiological beliefs about the behavior of the child in the video, as well as a demographic questionnaire and measures of acculturation and cultural values. Neither Anglo orientation nor Latino orientation was significantly correlated with biopsychosocial or sociological/spiritual etiological beliefs. Additionally, none of the cultural values were significantly correlated with biopsychosocial etiological beliefs. The cultural values familismo and traditional gender roles were significantly positively correlated with sociological/spiritual beliefs. Exploratory analyses also were conducted to further examine sociological/spiritual beliefs. After controlling for SES, familismo and traditional gender roles accounted for 30.5% of the total variance in sociological/spiritual beliefs about ADHD. Finally, post hoc analyses were conducted to examine individual categories of etiological beliefs. The current study adds to our knowledge about how Latino parents understand child behavior and has important implications for both research and mental health services with Latino parents. The results support the inclusion of etiological beliefs and cultural factors in research examining help-seeking and access to mental health services among Latino families and suggest that the incorporation of alternative etiological beliefs about child behavior may be an important factor in culturally-appropriate mental health services.

Download or read book Take Your Pills and Go to Your Room written by Janice Jones and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raising a child with ADHD is simply life times ten. I am ten times blessed. I am ten times loved. I am ten times alive. This is the true story of a mother raising a child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It's the story of the challenges, the blessings, and the rewards of parenting these special children, and her book includes helpful suggestions for diagnosis, medication, schooling, and tips for successful day-to-day management. Life with a child who has ADHD can be exhausting. Parents are inundated with information, overwhelmed by decision-making, and often numb and fatigued from meeting everyday challenges. But there is hope and beauty in every day. There is progress and victory in every hour. And there is an abundance of laughter and love in every moment. As I journeyed through the years of my son's upbringing I often said, "Life is an adventure! And I am going to give it everything I have." What I have is what God gives to me, and God richly blessed me with a child who has ADHD.

Book Stories from the Margin

Download or read book Stories from the Margin written by Lorelei Rita Carpenter and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carpenter and emerald have enabled readers a rare glimpse into experiences that are erased or perhaps never represented as they cause discomfort for those who can more easily live within the boundaries of the normal. When these mothers' stories become visible, they interrupt the smooth plotlines of the dominant stories of good mothering and cause unease. As they explore the contexts in which mothers of children with ADHD and ASD try to compose their lives, they highlight both the contradictory and complex intersection of diagnoses and treatment with ontological questions around disability and difference.... As Carpenter and emerald point out 'the problem is when different is taken to be deficit, especially when the deficit is located in the individual'. This book is an essential resource for professionals working with mothers who have children with ADD or ASD The narrative of these mothers is powerful and provides insight into the challenges of mothering children who are 'different'. These women's stories tell of isolation, marginalisation and attempts to silence their reality; they speak of resilience, self-sufficiency and courage.

Book Attention deficit hyperactivity Disorder Diagnosis Amongst Latinos and Other Non English Speakers

Download or read book Attention deficit hyperactivity Disorder Diagnosis Amongst Latinos and Other Non English Speakers written by Troy Zelones and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurobehavioral disorder, and also among the most prevalent chronic health conditions affecting school-aged children. The literature states that Latinos are at a greater risk to have ADHD, yet the studies also show that they are less likely to be diagnosed. The Latino population in the United States is the fastest growing ethnicity. The main purpose of this study is to identify whether being Latino and/or speaking a primary language other than English in the home will decrease the likelihood of being diagnosed with ADHD. California Health Interview Survey 2007 Child questionnaire data were analyzed to discern if either being Latino and/or speaking a language other than English in the home had an effect on ADHD diagnosis for California children 11 years and under. Both hypotheses were found to decrease the likelihood of being diagnosed with ADHD. Results, conclusions and future suggestions were discussed.

Book Empowering Latino Parents Advocating for Elementary Aged Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder ASD

Download or read book Empowering Latino Parents Advocating for Elementary Aged Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder ASD written by Crystal Maria Perez and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the experiences that Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Latino parents of children with Autism have had in working with school systems. The sample consisted of 3 families with children in grades kindergarten through third grade. The parents interviewed in all families were mothers of male children with Autism. This case study used narrative research methods to examine the personal stories of Latino parents of elementary age students with ASD who are currently attending schools in urban communities predominantly composed of CLD families. Parents participated in two individual interviews and a platica, which were all composed of a structured series of questions. The data collected through these interviews and platica helped create a story for each participant. Additionally, educational documents acquired through the families were reviewed and analyzed. There were numerous factors found impacting the experiences of these Latina mothers. This study exposed that special education professionals need to improve the quality, consistency, and tactful approaches in collaboration with CLD Latino families. By investigating the perspectives and experiences these Latina mothers had, this aimed to describe specific occasions in which these parents felt marginalized and disengaged. Some of these factors included cultural differences, language barriers, available parent participation, lack of advocacy skills, and parent confidence level.
