Book excerpt: Adelbert DeVillargennes joined the French Navy in 1807 as an apprentice and managed to climb to the post of Midshipman but transferred to the ranks of the Grande Armée. He fought as a lieutenant in Austria, although wounded he returned to active service in Spain where he was captured by the British. Interred in Britain as a prisoner of war he returned to fight at Napoleon’s side in 1815 during the Waterloo campaign. Eventually he emigrated to America and rose to be Italian Vice-Consul. His short but pithy reminiscences are filled with anecdotes of the life of a campaigning subaltern in Napoleon’s army.

Book The Illustrious Dead

Download or read book The Illustrious Dead written by Stephan Talty and published by Scribe Publications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Illustrious Dead is another triumph of narrative nonfiction from the author of the New York Times bestselling Empire of Blue Water. In the spring of 1812, Napoleon was at the height of his power. Forty-five million called him emperor. Unstoppable in his relentless pursuit of territory and authority, he held sole command of a nation that was the richest and most potent on earth, the most cultured, the furthest advanced in medicine and science and technology; In that fateful year, Napoleon turned toward Moscow at the helm of the largest invasion force in the history of mankind. His army was a thing of martial beauty, honed by constant warfare and brilliantly led. No army on earth could stop Bonaparte from conquering the world. But there was something waiting in the Russian steppes that would test Napoleon to his limit and bring his dreams of a world empire to a shocking close. It was not a brilliant general or an unseen alliance, but the tiny typhus microbe. The Illustrious Dead tells the tale of these two unstoppable historical forces meeting on the road to Moscow in a clash of killer pathogen and peerless army.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The never-before told story of how Napoleon's top brass escaped to America after Waterloo. Empire's Eagles is colorful, new, and an effectively unknown chapter in American history. In its center is the mystery of whether Napoleon's "Bravest of the brave," Marshal Ney, cheated a firing squad to escape under an alias and reinvent himself in America. At sunset on June 18, 1815 Napoleon Bonaparte was in desperate flight from the battlefield at Waterloo. Racing to reach Paris, he abandoned on the road his armored coach and Imperial necessaire containing a fortune in precious gems and cash. Would he stand and fight again or flee to the United States of America? On the run and with his options dwindling by the day, Napoleon came within one hour of secretly slipping to America on a Baltimore privateer with the active collusion of the United States consul in Bordeaux. Empire's Eagles tells the details of this story for the first time ever.

Book The Bonapartes in America

  • Author : Clarence Edward Macartney
  • Publisher : Pickle Partners Publishing
  • Release : 2019-01-13
  • ISBN : 1789123712
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book The Bonapartes in America written by Clarence Edward Macartney and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amazing and exciting, as romantic as it is realistic and historically authentic, THE BONAPARTES IN AMERICA was the first published work to contain in one volume all available material, much of it newly discovered by them, on every member of the Bonaparte family that lived in the United States or was connected in any way with the country. Dr. Macartney, distinguished historian, former head of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, and Major Dorrance, author and publisher, roamed afar in their quest of new and important material. Research in the British Museum, and special trips through France and to Corsica, to mention but a few, went into their book of old romance, which was first published on the 100th anniversary of the former King Joseph Bonaparte’s final return to Europe from the United States. This one famous and colorful family has placed a great if hitherto little known part in the building of America, our native land. THE BONAPARTES IN AMERICA contains fascinating chapters on Jerome Bonaparte and Elizabeth Patterson; Charles J. Bonaparte of Baltimore; Joseph Bonaparte at Philadelphia, Bordentown, New Jersey, and Lake Bonaparte New York; the Murats of Florida; Napoleon III in New York City; Napoleon III and Mexico; The Napoleonic Exiles in Alabama; Texas and the Champ d’Asile; Marshal Ney and North Carolina; Napoleon and the Louisiana Purchase; Napoleon’s American Son in California; and American Plots to Rescue Napoleon from St. Helena. THE. BONAPARTES IN AMERICA is beautifully illustrated with old portraits and engravings, including pictures of Napoleon, Jerome and Elizabeth. Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte. Charles J. Bonaparte, Joseph Bonaparte, Joseph’s I Philadelphia home, “Point Breeze” and Bonaparte I park at Bordentown, Lake Bonaparte, Prince and Princess Achille Murat, Napoleon III, Letizia Bonaparte, mother of Napoleon, John Gordon Bonaparte of San Francisco and the Napoleon House at New Orleans.

Book French Napoleonic Infantryman 1803 15

Download or read book French Napoleonic Infantryman 1803 15 written by Terry Crowdy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-12 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating look at the realities of day-to-day life as a Napoleonic Infantryman. This title draws on contemporary testimonies of life in Napoleon's army, documenting the reality of conscription, training, camp life and combat action for the common infantry soldier. In contrast to most works on this period, it calls into question the propagandist views expounded by numerous Bonapartists - the romantic notion of La Gloire is very much tempered by some hard-hitting recollections of the horror and misery of military life 200 years ago. Packed with prints taken from contemporary sources and superb colour illustrations, it provides a concise, revealing and authentic portrait of life in the Grand Armée.
