Book Napoleon and his Family The Story of a Corsican Clan

Download or read book Napoleon and his Family The Story of a Corsican Clan written by Walter Geer and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1928, this book represents Volume II in a series of three volumes. It covers the Napoleonic period of 1809-1813, following on from Napoleon’s return from Spain and ending with the French Army’s offensive on Russia. “It is impossible to understand fully the drama of the life of Napoleon without taking into consideration two factors, practically ignored by historians, which had a decisive bearing upon his career: his physical heritage, and the influence of his family. “The fame of Napoleon has so overshadowed that of his brothers and sisters that their influence on his career has generally been overlooked. Without disregarding the other cause, which was largely beyond his control, it may be said that the downfall of Napoleon was mainly due to the members of his family, whom he had raised so high, who by their shortcomings and their transgressions became the agents of his decline. “We propose to set forth in these pages the part for which the Family was responsible in the events which brought about the crumbling of the highest fortune that the world has ever seen upraised. “In this drama of Napoleon and His Family there are over twenty persons who take the subordinate roles, and occupy the stage beside the principal actor, but the character of Napoleon dominates the entire play. This, then, is not a life of Napoleon: not a history of his campaigns: not a record of his civil administration—it is only the story of the Family, as it influenced his designs, his acts, and his destiny.”

This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home and Court Life of the Emperor Napoleon and His Family, Vol. 2 of 4: With Pictures of the Most Distinguished Persons of the Time My presentation to the First Consul and Madame Bonaparte was a great affair for mymother; she occupied herself upon my toilet with more minute care than I imagine she had ever bestowed upon her own in the highest tide of her vanity. One thing disturbed her much, no ceremonial. "Nevertheless, he acts the King," said my mother. The truth was that at this time the interior of the First Consul's family was like that of a very rich man, with no more etiquette; Madame Bonaparte had not even yet ladies in waiting. We went to the Tuileries after the Opera, leaving the ballet of Psyche in the middle that we might not be too late, and arrived at ten o'clock. Book Napoleon Volume 2

Download or read book Napoleon Volume 2 written by Michael Broers and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon's life reached its most extraordinary stage, between 1805 and 1810. In 1805, Napoleon was suddenly at war with Britain, Russia, and Austria. He mobilised all his power to confront them, unleashing his magnificent Grande Armée. Its first, resounding victory at Austerlitz was followed by a whirlwind of campaigns, bringing Napoleon and his men to the borders of Russia. These stunning triumphs made Napoleon the master of the continent, but they left Britain unbowed. In the years that followed, this struggle with Britain came to dominate Napoleon's actions, leading him into the bloodbath of the Spanish Peninsular war, and his attempt to blockade Europe against British commerce. In 1809, Austria launched yet another assault on him. By 1810, Napoleon had routed them, and divorced Josephine in order to marry the daughter of the Austrian Emperor. But at a time of such victory, his own family was torn asunder in the struggle for survival.

Book Life of Napoleon Bonaparte Volume II

Download or read book Life of Napoleon Bonaparte Volume II written by Walter Scott and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The island of Corsica was, in ancient times, remarkable as the scene of Seneca's exile, and in the last century was distinguished by the memorable stand which the natives made in defence of their liberties against the Genoese and French, during a war which tended to show the high and indomitable spirit of the islanders, united as it is with the fiery and vindictive feelings proper to their country and climate. In this island, which was destined to derive its future importance chiefly from the circumstance, NAPOLEON BUONAPARTE, or BONAPARTE, had his origin. His family was noble, though not of much distinction, and rather reduced in fortune. Flattery afterwards endeavoured to trace the name which he had made famous, into remote ages, and researches were made through ancient records, to discover that there was one Buonaparte who had written a book, another who had signed a treaty-a female of the name who had given birth to a pope, with other minute claims of distinction, which Napoleon justly considered as trivial, and unworthy of notice. He answered the Emperor of Austria, who had a fancy of tracing his son-in-law's descent from one of the petty sovereigns of Treviso, that he was the Rodolph of Hapsbourg of his family; and to a genealogist, who made a merit of deducing his descent from some ancient line of Gothic princes, he caused reply to be made, that he dated his patent of nobility from the battle of Montenotte, that is, from his first victory.
