Book Nanomaterials in Architecture and Art Conservation

Download or read book Nanomaterials in Architecture and Art Conservation written by Gerald Ziegenbalg and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conservation and protection of buildings that constitute our cultural heritage are complex tasks calling for a comprehensive knowledge of the historical background of the buildings, as well as the construction technologies and materials used. Nanomaterials in Architecture and Art Conservation gives a comprehensive overview of the state of the art of using nanomaterials in conservation sciences, mainly for stone, mortar and plaster strengthening, but also for the consolidation of wall paintings. The book compiles and details deterioration mechanisms of stone and historical mortars, as well as methods of characterising and testing consolidation effects. The non- or semi-destructive characterisation methods that will be presented allow additional measurements to characterise objects before and after any interventions. Besides, general aspects of inorganic consolidants are targeted. The focus, in particular, is the application of nanolime as a new consolidation agent. Basic characteristics and application advices as well as beneficial combinations with other consolidation agents, such as silicic acid esters, are emphasised. What makes this book so special is the large number of practical applications described from the viewpoint of different restorers, offering a direct inside view of the procedure for the conservation of historical monuments. Restorers dealing with stone, mortar and plaster conservation; artists; advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level students of conservation science, art and nanotechnology; offices for the protection of monuments and heritage agencies; and researchers in materials science, conservation, nanotechnology and chemistry, especially those with an interest in applied sciences, will find this book a great reference.

Book Materials Characterisation Five

Download or read book Materials Characterisation Five written by Andrea Alberto Mammoli and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, engineering materials could be characterized successfully using relatively simple testing procedures. However, advanced materials technology has led to the development of materials with complex meso-, micro- and nano-structures that can no longer be characterised with simple testing procedures. Materials modelling and characterisation have become ever more closely intertwined. Characterisation, in essence, connects the abstract material model with the real-world behaviour of the material in question. Characterisation of complex materials often requires a combination of experimental and computational techniques. This book contains papers to be presented at the Fifth International Conference, convened to facilitate the sharing of recent work between researchers who use computational methods, those who perform experiments, and those who do both, in all areas of materials characterisation. The papers cover such topics as: Advances in composites; Thermal analysis; Nano-materials; Damage mechanics; Computational models and experiments; Mechanical characterisation and testing; Nano-composites; Energy materials; Chemo-mechanical problems; Innovative experiments; Recycled materials; and Corrosion problems.

  • Pages : 32 pages

Download or read book Nanolime written by DAVID. ODGERS and published by . This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidance is aimed at conservators and those specifying conservation treatments for historic stonework. It will also be of interest to conservation officers, and building owners and managers. Although the past ten years have seen an increase in the use of nanolime as a stone consolidant, not much was known about its properties and performance, and there had been no long-term evaluation of its effect on deteriorated limestone in an external UK environment. Furthermore, there was no consistent guidance regarding application of nanolime. For these reasons, Historic England commissioned a programme of research at the University of Bath and site trials at various English cathedrals. This information will aid practitioners and specifiers to make informed decisions about when and how to use nanolime. This document describes: the performance requirements and essential properties of consolidants in general the scientific theory underpinning the use of nanolime factors that might limit the effectiveness of nanolime the best ways to assess the suitability of stone for treatment with nanolime how to apply nanolime

Book Carbon Management in Tropical and Sub Tropical Terrestrial Systems

Download or read book Carbon Management in Tropical and Sub Tropical Terrestrial Systems written by Probir K. Ghosh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-23 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil organic carbon (SOC), a key component of the global carbon (C) pool, plays an important role in C cycling, regulating climate, water supplies and biodiversity, and therefore in providing the ecosystem services that are essential to human well-being. Most agricultural soils in temperate regions have now lost as much as 60% of their SOC, and as much as 75% in tropical regions, due to conversion from natural ecosystems to agricultural uses and mainly due to continuous soil degradation. Sequestering C can help to offset C emissions from fossil fuel combustion and other C-emitting activities, while also enhancing soil quality and long-term agronomic productivity. However, developing effective policies for creating terrestrial C sinks is a serious challenge in tropical and subtropical soils, due to the high average annual temperatures in these regions. It can be accomplished by implementing improved land management practices that add substantial amounts of biomass to soil, cause minimal soil disturbance, conserve soil and water, improve soil structure, and enhance soil fauna activity. Continuous no-till crop production is arguably the best example. These soils need technically sound and economically feasible strategies to sustainably enhance their SOC pools. Hence, this book provides comprehensive information on SOC and its management in different land-use systems, with a focus on preserving soils and their ecosystem services. The only book of its kind, it offers a valuable asset for students, researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders involved in the sustainable development and management of natural resources at the global level.
