Book excerpt: Nanny Reilly and her dog Henry Daly are tricked by a mean leprechaun king into kidnapping his niece Princess Tara. Nanny's kindness and innocence brings out the best in King Brian and they are invited to the leprechaun dance on midsummer's eve. Nanny, Henry Daly and their new friend Ned dress up in their Sunday best and go to the dance. On their way to the dance, Princess Tara and her father King Rory are caught by a mean man named Bull Cullen. Bull is looking for the crock of gold and is ready to surrender Princess Tara and King Rory to the Banshee, a mean old witch who takes all her victims into her Banshee's Cradle in the heart of the forest. Nanny, Ned and Henry Daly rescue them. For their bravery, they are presented with a gold whistle each and two magic ponies. The gold whistles give them the same magic powers as a leprechaun. One day, while out beachcombing on their ponies, they come across footprints in the sand. They follow the prints and find a distraught fisherman named Fran O'Toole whose friend Mike Donovan has been captured by the Banshee. These footprints are the beginning of a magical adventure, which land them deep within the Banshee's Cradle.

Book Nanny State

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Harsanyi
  • Publisher : Crown
  • Release : 2007-09-18
  • ISBN : 0767928458
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Nanny State written by David Harsanyi and published by Crown. This book was released on 2007-09-18 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When did we lose our right to be lazy, unhealthy, and politically incorrect? Move over Big Brother! An insidious new group has inserted itself into American politics. They are the nannies—not the stroller-pushing set but an invasive band of do-gooders who are subtly and steadily stripping us of our liberties, robbing us of the inalienable right to make our own decisions, and turning America into a nation of children. As you read this, countless busybodies across the nation are rolling up their sleeves to do the work of straightening out your life. Certain Massachusetts towns have banned school-yard tag. San Francisco has passed laws regulating the amount of water you should use in dog bowls. The mayor of New York City has french fries and doughnuts in his sights. In some parts of California, smoking is prohibited . . . outside. The government, under pressure from the nanny minority, is twisting the public’s arm into obedience. Playground police, food fascists, anti-porn crusaders —whether they're legislating morality or wellbeing—nannies are popping up all over America. In the name of health, safety, decency, and—shudder—good intentions, these ever-vigilant politicians and social activists are dictating what we eat, where we smoke, what we watch and read, and whom we marry. Why do bureaucrats think they know what's better for us than we do? And are they selectively legislating in the name of political expediency? For instance, why do we ban mini-motorbikes, responsible for five deaths each year, and not skiing, which accounts for fifty deaths each year? Why is medical marijuana, a substance yet to claim a single life, banned and not aspirin, which accounts for about 7,600 deaths? Exhaustively researched, sharply observed, and refreshingly lucid, Nanny Sate looks at the myriad ways we are turning the United States into a soulless and staid nation—eroding not only our personal freedoms but our national character.

Book Sidney Reilly

Download or read book Sidney Reilly written by Benny Morris and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing biography of Sidney Reilly, the early twentieth-century virtuoso of espionage Sidney Reilly (c. 1873–1925) is one of the most colorful and best–known spies of the twentieth century. Emerging from humble beginnings in southern Russia, Reilly was an inventive multilingual businessman and conman who enjoyed espionage as a sideline. By the early twentieth century he was working as an agent for Scotland Yard, spying on émigré communities in Paris and London, with occasional sorties to Germany, Russia, and the Far East. He spent World War I in the United States, brokering major arms deals for tsarist Russia, and then decided to become a professional spy, joining the ranks of MI6, Britain’s foreign intelligence service. He came close to overthrowing the Bolshevik regime in Moscow before eventually being lured back to Russia and executed. Said to have been the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s iconic James Bond character, Reilly was simultaneously married to three or four women and had mistresses galore. Sifting through the reality and the myth of Reilly’s life, historian Benny Morris offers a fascinating portrait of one of the most intriguing figures from the golden age of spies.

Book Ride the Revolution

Download or read book Ride the Revolution written by Suze Clemitson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ride the Revolution represents the best new writing on cycling from women involved in the sport at all levels – as fans, key personnel, riders, photographers, journalists and presenters. When Marie Marvingt decided to ride the 1908 Tour de France she was told 'absolument, non!' by M. Degranges and the Societe du Tour de France. Instead she rode each stage 15 minutes after the official race had departed and finished all 4,488 kms of the parcours - a feat that only 36 of the 110 men who entered the race could equal. Her motto? "I decided to do everything better, always and forever." It's in the spirit of Breakneck Marie that this book has been written. This is not an anthology of women writing about women's cycling. Nor is it an anthology of women writing about men's bottoms in lycra, or peloton crushes or the curse of helmet hair. This is an book that celebrates the diversity of women's writing about the glorious, sometimes murky, often bizarre and frequently hilarious world of cycling in all its soapy operatic glory - from the professional sport to the club run, on the roadside and in the saddle, behind the scenes and on the massage table. These fresh and vibrant voices examine the sport from a new perspective to provide insights that rarely make it into the mainstream - what is it like to be a top women rider or work in their support team? Where is the women's sport heading and when will more women be represented at the highest level of sport's governance? And how do you get out and ride your bike when the news is full of stories of cyclists dying and you can't get clothing that fits?

Book Nannies Migration and Early Childhood Education and Care

Download or read book Nannies Migration and Early Childhood Education and Care written by Elizabeth Adamson and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2016-11-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, changes in the labor market, including an increase in the number of young working mothers, has led to a rapid growth of employment for nannies throughout the Western world. That rapid growth, however, has come with an increase in long, nonstandard working hours and in the context of a lack of regulation or of affordable, flexible solutions to the demand for early childhood education and care. This book offers empirical research and comparative analysis of in-home childcare in Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada, three nations where governments are actively recruiting migrant workers as an affordable childcare solution, showing how in-home childcare is ultimately, if indirectly, supported by government early childcare policy and migration policy.

Book The New Blue Media

Download or read book The New Blue Media written by Theodore Hamm and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at the journalists and satirists who’ve helped transform the political landscape in the twenty-first century. The New Blue Media traces the rise during the Bush years of new media stars: the news-saturated satire of The Onion, The Daily Show, and The Colbert Report; the polemical assaults of Michael Moore and Air America; and the instant-messaging politics of MoveOn, Daily Kos, and the netroots. With the exception of Air America, all of these new media outlets have found commercial success—marking, says Hamm, a new era in liberal politics. Does this new media matter? In 2004, both Michael Moore and MoveOn became major players; more recently, the influence of the netroots has sparked upheaval and debate within the Democratic Party. The New Blue Media examines this phenomenon in depth, and the reshaping of both the style and the substance of progressivism.

Book excerpt: Roma Downey--best known as the beloved angel on the TV show Touched by an Angel--has created a beautiful book filled with encouragement and hope, assuring us of God's comforting presence in our lives. Ever since she was a little girl, Roma has seen butterflies as a reminder of God's presence. They have appeared to her in moments when she needed encouragement and reminded her she is not alone. In this deeply personal book, Roma shares stories from her life, alongside quotes, poems, scripture, and artwork that she prays will uplift you as they have her. Each grace-filled chapter of this beautiful full-color book covers topics such as courage, strength, gratitude, love, and kindness. Reminiscent of the message of her popular television series, Touched by an Angel, this book's central theme is that there is a God, He loves you, and that even in your most difficult moments, He is by your side. That though you may feel alone, you are never truly alone. The subtle butterfly theme reminds us that the wonder of God's love and kindness is sometimes reflected in the gentle whispers of his creation and that we all have the power to transform from simple caterpillars into exquisite butterflies. Written in a way that encourages you to 'dip in and out' of its flowing content, this inspiring book invites you to return to its pages again and again, as life brings new challenges or you find yourself in need of new inspiration.
