They soon realize Bobo and Lulu are changing...for the worse. Eventually they drift apart for good. Timothy enjoys running with his spirit horses that only he can see. On his birthday Dad and Grandfather give him a horse he names Chief. The spirit horses bid him a sad farewell, and he knows he is growing up and doesn't need their companionship anymore. He's concerned about alcoholism on the reservation. His dad was, and Joe's dad is, an alcoholic. When Joe's dad dies Timothy has a bad dream about the disease, and Grandfather says it's time for the sweat lodge and the vision quest ceremonies. This is where Timothy receives his Indian name, Little Eagle. During a winter blizzard Joe steals Chief, so he can pretend for a little while Chief is his. Timothy, brother Kenny and Dad find Joe, who is trapped under a fallen log, leg broken. Timothy forgives him, knowing how lonely he is with no grandfather to bond with. The day after New Years Grandfather passes on to the spirit world. Timothy goes to the sweat lodge to grieve, and hears Grandfather's voice in the wind, assuring him he'll always be with him. He determines to carry on the teachings and traditions he has learned from his beloved grandfather.

Book excerpt: In Once Upon a Time: My Life with Children's Books Sheila Egoff tells the story of her working life, from her early voracious reading, through all her significant contributions to libraries in Canada and to our national understanding of our own literature for children. She brings both a critical eye and a personal touch to this book, which reads as a memoir and as an account of important developments in Canadian writing and librarianship. In this time of cuts to budgets for books and for librarians, there is much here to reflect upon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ways of Our Grandfathers compliments David D. Plains previous book, The Plains of Aamjiwnaang. While his first book focused on the history of the Anishinabek (Chippewa) of Aamjiwnaang territory, Ways of Our Grandfathers describes Anishinabek culture and traditions from the pre- and early-contact period with Europeans. It covers such anthropological topics as social life, economic life, and religious life. Clear descriptions of characteristics, language, political structure, band designations, and their totemic system are illustrated. Gatherings, games, and stories are depicted with vivid illustrations. Construction of their dwellings and canoes are described, as well as methods of hunting, fishing, and sugar-making. Trade routes and places of trade are given as well as types of trade goods. Religious life is detailed and includes a description of the political structure of the Midwiwin Medicine Society, healing practices, and death customs. The book includes an appendix listing many traditional medicines. Another appendix provides a detailed description of a Midwiwin initiation ceremony performed on the banks of the St. Clair River recorded verbatim by a local missionary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brief History of the Saugeen Peninsula is historical non-fiction and as the title suggests it is by no means exhaustive. The first section of the book highlights the historical periods of the settling of the peninsula by the Ojibwa through the War of 1812. This is followed by the treaty-making era and relationships with missionaries. The historical section finishes with the paternalism of the early days of the Indian Act through modern times. The second section of the book gives a glimpse into the culture of the Anishnaabek. Topics such as Ojibwa characteristics, language, religion, and trade. Band designations, wampum and dodems are explained as well as gatherings, games and stories. Lifestyle is also covered illustrating the cyclical movements throughout the territory following the seasons from the main villages to hunting camps in winter, to sugar making in the early spring, to the fishing camps in late spring.

  • Pages : 400 pages

Download or read book A Second Look written by Andie Peterson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-10-19 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four-hundred-twenty-five books are reviewed in this superb collection. A Second Look, Native Americans in Childrens Books gives a thorough examination of the books as a guide for parents, teachers, librarians, and administrators interested in books for children. Anyone involved in selecting books will find this guide useful in working through the maze of available materials. Andie Peterson, one of the few women to be awarded an Eagle Feather, has provided a meaningful criteria to help in judging books. She outlines ways for objectively studying books to draw conclusions as to the suitability for the reader. She writes candidly about books filled with stereotypes, hurtful images, and damaging text and illustrations. She writes eloquent, glowing reviews of the books that are real treasures. She writes: On a daily basis, children must face the hidden curriculum that lets them know where they fit in, whether they can achieve their goals, whether they even dare to dream. An overwhelming part of that hidden curriculum begins with books that are more narrative and illustrations; they are books that carry a message of politics and values. Andie advises that in selecting Native American books, the non-Native child must be considered, also. She counsels that hurtful books set in motion attitudes of prejudice that persist for years. She states that she has reviewed books with older copyrights because they are still on the shelves in libraries and available via the Internet. She says reading the older books helps to understand how adults have formed ideas about Native people. She says: After all, if its in a book in the library, people believe it to be true. Its time to disturb the peace and end the ritual of damage. A Second Look, Native Americans in Childrens Books By Andie Peterson

Book Ojibwa Narratives of Charles and Charlotte Kawbawgam and Jacques LePique 1893 1895

Download or read book Ojibwa Narratives of Charles and Charlotte Kawbawgam and Jacques LePique 1893 1895 written by Charles Kawbawgam and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ojibwa Narratives presents a fresh view of an early period of Ojibwa thought and ways of life in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the south shore of Lake Superior. This fascinating collection of fifty-two narratives features, for the first time, the tales of three nineteenth-century Ojibwa storytellers-Charles and Charlotte Kawbawgam and Jaques LePique-collected by Homer H. Kidder. By the late nineteenth century, typical Ojibwa life had been disrupted by the influx of white developers. But these tales reflect a nostalgic view of an earlier period when the heart of Ojibwa semi-nomadic culture remained intact, a time when the fur trade, together with seasonal roving, traditional transportation, and indigenous practices of child rearing, religious thought, art, and music permeated daily life.
