Download or read book Writing Namibia Literature in Transition written by Sarala Krishnamurthy and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing Namibia: Literature in Transition is a cornucopia of extraordinary and fascinating material which will be a rich resource for students, teachers and readers interested in Namibia. The text is wide ranging, defining literature in its broadest terms. In its multifaceted approach, the book covers many genres traditionally outside academic literary discourse and debate. The 22 chapters cover literature of all categories in Namibia since independence: written and performance poetry, praise poetry, Oshiwambo orature, drama, novels, autobiography, womens writing, subaltern studies, literature in German, Ju|hoansi and Otjiherero, childrens literature, Afrikaans fiction, story-telling through film, publishing, and the interface between literature and society. The inclusive approach is the books strength as it allows a wide range of subjects to be addressed, including those around gender, race and orature which have been conventionally silenced.

It lays bare the hearts of nearly 100 poets who have with courage, honesty, and love, spilled their thoughts, tears, rage, regrets, love and laughter onto the pages of this book. This collection celebrates the country's natural beauty, stands in awe of the strength of our people, expresses anger at the inequality and injustices present in our society and imagines idyllic dreams and hopes for a better future. The poems display rich poetic nuances, vary in length and form and give a textured view of the poets and the environments they represent, a true reflection of Namibian diversity, and a glimpse into our soul.

Book Culture and Customs of Namibia

Download or read book Culture and Customs of Namibia written by Anene Ejikeme and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-07-22 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the history, culture, and society of Namibia, a country on which little information in English exists. Namibia is a sizeable and significant country in southern Africa that is little known to the outside world. A vast country of startling beauty with a storied history, including one of the world's worst genocides and a war of independence that lasted nearly a quarter century, this "land between two deserts" is a fascinating result of its African, German, and English influences. Culture and Customs of Namibia is one of very few English language works written about Namibia's history, culture, and society. The book reveals details about Namibian daily life, gender relations, modern youth culture, and the influence of traditional cultures that allow readers to appreciate this country's unique character. A section on tourism explains how Namibia—an extremely arid country with an immense number and diversity of wildlife—is on the cutting edge of ecotourism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich collection of captivating and remarkable chapters, Writing Namibia Coming of Age presents research of senior academics as well as emerging scholars from Namibia. The book includes wide ranging topics in literature written in English and other Namibian languages, such as German, Afrikaans and Oshiwambo. Almost thirty years after independence, Namibia literature has come of age with new writers experimenting with different genres and varied aspects of literature. As an aesthetic object and social phenomenon, Namibian literature still fulfils the function of social conscience and as new writers emerge, there is ample demonstration that, pluri-vocal as they are, Namibian literary texts relate in a complex manner to the socio-historical trends shaping the country. The Namibian literary-critical tradition continues to paint some versions of Namibia and what we find in this new and highly welcome volume is a canvas of rich voices and perspectives that demonstrate an intricate diversity in terms of culture, language, and themes.

Book It is No More a Cry

Download or read book It is No More a Cry written by Henning Melber and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of poetry written by students at the United Nations Institute for Namibia (Lusaka), reflecting the hopes and commitment of the younger generation to the struggle for independence and national reconstruction in Namibia. The editor has contributed an introductory essay - "Colonialism, culture and resistance: the case of Namibia" (p. 11-23) - outlining the historical process and the ideological character of colonial rule in Namibia. He shows how non-European cultures were objects of violent conquest, and that the prevailing ideology denied any meaningful sense to the existence of indigenous cultures. In the present era, he argues, the aim of the National Party has been to integrate cultural aspects on a tribal basis as a tool of perpetuating colonial structures under the cover of "separate development". (Eriksen/Moorsom 1989).

Written especially for students, this book selectively surveys the topic in a clear and accessible way. Included are roughly 600 alphabetically arranged entries on writers, genres, and major works. Many entries cite works for further reading, and the volume closes with a selected, general bibliography. Africa is a land of contrasts and of diverse cultures and traditions. It is also a land of conflict and creativity. The literature of the continent draws upon a fascinating body of oral traditions and lore and also reflects the political turmoil of the modern world. With the increased interest in cultural diversity and the growing centrality of Africa in world politics, African literature is figuring more and more prominently in the curriculum. This book helps students learn about the African literary achievement. Written expressly for students, this book is far more accessible than other reference works on the subject. Included are nearly 600 alphabetically arranged entries on authors, such as Chinua Achebe, Athol Fugard, Buchi Emecheta, Nadine Gordimer, and Wole Soyinka; major works, such as Things Fall Apart and Petals of Blood; and individual genres, such as the novel, drama, and poetry. Many entries cite works for further reading, and the volume closes with a selected, general bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English language as spoken in Namibia has virtually been overlooked in most textbooks, handbooks, and surveys of varieties of English around the world, or else has only been mentioned in passing. However, this variety of English has recently attracted the attention of several researchers and the present volume brings together most scholars actively involved in the research on English in Namibia from various linguistic fields to present their current research. It covers a wide range of linguistic issues, such as empirical analyses on various levels of linguistic description and use, as well as the application of diverse methodologies, from questionnaire surveys, sociolinguistic interviews and focus group discussions, to corpus linguistics, linguistic landscaping, and digital ethnography. This book represents the first comprehensive collection of articles and in-depth discussions of this emerging variety of World Englishes.

Book Ancestors and Other Visitors

Download or read book Ancestors and Other Visitors written by D. Stevenson and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pursued through poetic pastures of faith, love, and time by an Omuhimba muse who alternately challenges and enchants him, D. Stevenson presents Ancestors and Other Visitors, a poetry anthology that is as sweepingly existential as it is personal and as sagely simple as it is complex. An immigrant, artist and spoken wordsmith observing the world through a traveler soul, Stevenson journeys through time and literary style to pay homage to influence such as e.e. cummings, W.B. Yeats and Robert Hayden in a wonderfully intimate selection of poems. Set primarily in Windhoek, Namibia, Stevenson’s home of 37 years, Ancestors is at once a musing on self, surroundings and the local artists who inflame his imagination: a young Namibian painter, a dance troupe that inspired ‘Arc magnificent’ and ‘Unseen’, with original ballet, and the assorted upcoming poets who fees his passion and whose stage he shares. Offering up exposition as well as desperate, imagined and curious conversations. Ancestors is a welcome and unprecedented addition to the Namibian poetry landscape.
