Book Literary Names

Download or read book Literary Names written by Alastair Fowler and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do authors use pseudonyms and pen-names, or ingeniously hide names in their work with acrostics and anagrams? How has the range of permissible given names changed and how is this reflected in literature? Why do some characters remain mysteriously nameless? In this rich and learned book, Alastair Fowler explores the use of names in literature of all periods - primarily English but also Latin, Greek, French, and Italian - casting an unusual and rewarding light on the work of literature itself. He traces the history of names through Homer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton, Thackeray, Dickens, Joyce, and Nabokov, showing how names often turn out to be the thematic focus. Fowler shows that the associations of names, at first limited, become increasingly salient and sophisticated as literature itself develops.

Book Personal Names and Naming from an Anthropological Linguistic Perspective

Download or read book Personal Names and Naming from an Anthropological Linguistic Perspective written by Sambulo Ndlovu and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-08-07 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a gap in the literature as it uniquely approaches onomastics from the perspective of both anthropology and linguistics. It addresses names and cultures from 16 countries and five continents, thus offering readers an opportunity to comprehend and compare names and naming practices across cultures. The chapters presented in this book explore the cultural significance of personal names, naming ceremonies, conventions and practices. They illustrate how these names and practices perform certain culture-specific functions, such as religion, identity and social activity. Some chapters address the socio-political significance of personal names and their expression of self and otherness. The book also links the linguistic structure of personal names to culture by looking at their morphology, syntax and semantics. It is divided into four sections: Section 1 demonstrates how personal names perform human culture, Section 2 focuses on how personal names index socio-political transitioning, Section 3 demonstrates religious values in personal names and naming, and Section 4 links linguistic structure and analysis of personal names to culture and heritage.

Book excerpt: Within the great diversity of their world, the assertion of origin was essential to the ancient Greeks in defining their sense of who they were and how they distinguished themselves from neighbours and strangers. Each person's name might carry both identity and origin - 'I am' . . . inseparable from 'I come from' . . . Names have surfaced in many guises and locations - on coins and artefacts, embedded within inscriptions and manuscripts - carrying with them evidence even from prehistoric and preliterate times. The Lexicon of Greek Personal Names has already identified more than 200,000 individuals. The contributors to this volume draw on this resource to demonstrate the breadth of scholarly uses to which name evidence can be put. These essays narrate the stories of political and social change revealed by the incidence of personal names and cast a fascinating light upon both the natural and supernatural phenomena which inspired them. This volume offers dramatic illumination of the ways in which the ancient Greeks both created and interpreted their world through the specific language of personal names.

Book Personal Names in a Medieval Context

Download or read book Personal Names in a Medieval Context written by Valéria Tóth and published by Helmut Buske Verlag. This book was released on 2022-11-17 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book studies general name theoretical questions and universal features of personal name giving and also provides a description of the personal name system of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. The chapters on name theory introduce a cognitive-pragmatic model that is suitable for the characterization of the anthroponym system of any language in any of its historical eras. In the chapters discussing the features of old Hungarian personal name giving and usage we can find a specific application of the theoretical model. The medieval Carpathian Basin provides an excellent opportunity for such an analysis for several reasons. On the one hand because this region was at the crossroads of languages and cultures in the Middle Ages and this also clearly influenced its anthroponym systems. On the other hand, the time period under scrutiny, the Middle Ages (and more precisely the Old Hungarian Era between 895 and 1526) witnessed the restructuring of the name system on multiple levels, including the appearance and ensuing dominance of personal names of a Latin origin as a result of the country becoming a Christian nation and the emergence of family names as a new personal name category. The book also provides a detailed overview of the historical process in which personal name categories and personal name types were built and relied on one another.

Book Personal Names Hitler and the Holocaust

Download or read book Personal Names Hitler and the Holocaust written by I. M. Nick and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-05-13 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal Names, Hitler, and the Holocaust: A Socio-Onomastic Study of Genocide and Nazi Germany provides readers with an increased understanding of and sensitivity to the many powerful ways in which personal names are used by both perpetrators and victims during wartime. This book concentrates on one of the most terrifying and yet fascinating periods of modern history: the Holocaust. In particular, it examines the different ways in which personal names were used by Nationalist Socialists to hunt and destroy the victims of their genocidal ideology. Even before requiring Jewish residents to wear a yellow Star of David and have the letter “J” stamped on their passports, Nazi leaders had decreed that all Jewish women and men must add the names “Sara(h)” and “Israel” to their documentation. It did not take long for the perfidious logic behind this naming (onomastic) legislation to become frighteningly clear: it made it that much easier to pinpoint Jewish residents for discrimination, marginalization, relocation, deportation, and ultimately extermination. Through compelling first-hand accounts from Holocaust survivors, in-depth interviews with descendants of Nazi war criminals, and a plethora of chilling cases extracted directly from the meticulous records kept by the National Socialists, this work presents a harrowing historical account of the way personal names were used during the Third Reich to achieve Hitler’s homicidal vision. Importantly, the use of personal names and naming to target and annihilate victims is not a historical anomaly of World War II but a widespread sociolinguistic practice that has been demonstrated in many modern-day acts of genocide. From Rwanda to Bosnia, Berlin to Washington, when governmental controls are abridged and ethical boundaries are crossed, very quickly, something as simple as a person’s name can determine who lives and who dies.

Book A Lexicon of Greek Personal Names

Download or read book A Lexicon of Greek Personal Names written by T. Corsten and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-03-04 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Lexicon of Greek Personal Names offers scholars a comprehensive listing of all named individuals from the ancient Greek-speaking world. The information needed has been compiled from all written sources, literary, epigraphical, papyrological, and numismatic, within a chronological range from the eighth century BC to approximately 600 AD; the geographical limits match the use of the Greek language in antiquity, from Asia Minor to the Western Mediterranean, the Black Sea to North Africa. With the present volume, LGPN moves into Asia Minor (modern Turkey), to the areas of Pontos, Bithynia, Mysia, the Troad, Aiolis, Ionia, and Lydia. Asia Minor is particularly interesting since it differs from most other regions covered so far in its ethnic and cultural diversity. Personal names are known in abundance from almost all cultures to be found in this area, and they therefore play a prominent role in the study of ethnicity and acculturation.

Book Studies in the Personal Names of Genesis 1 11

Download or read book Studies in the Personal Names of Genesis 1 11 written by Richard S. Hess and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 2009 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Genesis 1-11 is a text that may well have received more attention than any other in the history of literature. Nevertheless, what do we know about the personal names that occur in these chapters and whose influence has permeated all of Western literature? Hess provides a thorough investigation of the ancient Near Eastern background of these names and discusses how each played a key role in adding significance to the stories and genealogies in which they are found. By studying both the linguistic contexts in the surrounding cultures and the wordplay in the biblical texts, the author provides the first comprehensive study of the importance of these names and traces the implications of his results for the antiquity and power of the familiar stories in which they appear." -- Publisher description.
