  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book The Law of the Olympic Games written by Alexandre Miguel Mestre and published by T.M.C. Asser Press. This book was released on 2011-08-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am deeply honoured and very pleased indeed to have been invited to write the Foreword to this book, especially as the great success of and excitement generated by the Beijing Olympics last Summer is still fresh in all our minds! This is the first work on this important subject – the Olympic Games having been well described as ‘the greatest sporting show on earth’ – and the author, Alexandre Miguel Mestre, a distinguished Portuguese international sports lawyer, is to be warmly congratulated on producing it. The book covers the historical development of ‘Olympic Law’ and the current legal status of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as an NGO (non-g- ernmental organisation) under Public International Law, and its various constituent members and organs. The UN resolutions on the Olympic Truce of which the latest one is published in the book, are of a recommendatory nature (‘soft law’), but well illustrate the wide range of international legal instruments, which constitute the corpus of so-called ‘Olympic Law’, including the inter-State Nairobi Treaty on the Protection of the Olympic Symbol – the famous five interconnected rings. The book also addresses some contemporary legal issues affecting the Olympic Movement, including eligibility criteria, dual participation in the Olympics and the Paralympics as well as environmental concerns and the protection of the so-called ‘Olympic Properties’ – in other words the valuable intellectual property rights of the IOC including TV rights – without which the Olympic Games could not be financed and staged.

Book Olympic Marketing

Download or read book Olympic Marketing written by Alain Ferrand and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Olympic Games have become the definitive sports event, with an unparalleled global reach and a remarkably diverse constituency of stakeholders, from the IOC and International Federations to athletes, sponsors and fans. It has been estimated, for example, that 3.6 billion people (about half of the world population) watched at least one minute of the Beijing Games in 2008 on television. The driving force behind the rise of the modern Olympics has been the Olympic marketing programme, which has acted as a catalyst for cooperation between stakeholders and driven the promotion, financial security and stability of the Olympic movement. This book is the first to explain the principles of Olympic marketing and to demonstrate how they can be applied successfully in all other areas of sports marketing and management. The book outlines a strategic and operational framework based on three types of co-productive relationships (market, network and informal) and explains how this framework can guide professional marketing practice. Containing case studies, summaries, insight boxes and examples of best practice in every chapter, this book is important reading for all students and practitioners working in sports marketing, sports management or Olympic studies.

Book Protecting Intellectual Property in the Arabian Peninsula

Download or read book Protecting Intellectual Property in the Arabian Peninsula written by David Price and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the endeavours of the Arabian Peninsula States – namely the Gulf Cooperation Council member States of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as well as Jordan and Yemen as prospective GCC members – in establishing national intellectual property protection regimes which both meet their international treaty obligations and are also congruent with their domestic policy objectives. It uses the WTO’s TRIPS Agreement of 1995 as the universal benchmark against which the region’s laws are assessed. The challenges faced by the States in enforcing their intellectual property laws receive particular attention. Protecting Intellectual Property in the Arabian Peninsula considers the changing nature of the States’ intellectual property laws since 1995. It argues that the decade immediately following the TRIPS Agreement was marked by a period of foreign forces shaping or influencing the character of the States’ intellectual property legislative regimes, primarily through multilateral or bilateral trade-based agreements. The second and current decade, however, see a significant shift away from foreign influences and a move towards domestic and regional imperatives and initiatives taking over. The work also examines regional initiatives for the protection of traditional knowledge and cultural heritage, as areas of intellectual property which fall outside the parameters of the TRIPS Agreement, but which are of significant concern to the States and other developing countries, and to which they are giving increasing attention in terms of providing proper protection.

Book Basics of International Intellectual Property Law

Download or read book Basics of International Intellectual Property Law written by G. Gregory Letterman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This basic guide to intellectual property law, from the point of view of international commerce, clearly demarcates the ground on which any contract involving intellectual property must be based. It describes and analyzes the legally valid guidelines by which any commercial entity may: facilitate the sale of a protected product in foreign markets; prevent the use of protected property by competitors at home and abroad; and forestall the manufacture abroad of identical or misleadingly similar items. The author considers both the variety of national requirements and the international intellectual property regime that is now in place under the WTO/GATT, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and multilateral treaties. In connection with both technology and proprietary information, emphasis is on the need to determine, on a country-by-country basis: which "ideas" are subject to intellectual property protection; which "persons" can seek and obtain intellectual property protection; which special use permits may apply; and which technical requirements must be met. Basics of International Intellectual Property Law is a fundamental resource for any business person or counsel considering entry into foreign markets. The information and guidance it provides is easy to understand and use, and will help any cross-border business venture to proceed smoothly and successfully. Published under the Transnational Publishers imprint.
