Book excerpt: In this anthology of new and classic articles, fifteen noted feminist philosophers explore contemporary ethical issues that uniquely affect the lives of women. These issues in applied ethics include autonomy, responsibility, sexual harassment, women in the military, new technologies for reproduction, surrogate motherhood, pornography, abortion, nonfeminist women and others. Whether generated by old social standards or intensified by recent technology, these dilemmas all pose persistent, 'nagging, ' questions that cry out for answers. Unlike other anthologies in feminist ethics, this book encourages critical thinking about concrete, contemporary social and moral issues. Each engaging, clearly written article is followed by discussion questions, making the book useful for students of women's studies, philosophy, sociology, and political science

Book excerpt: The pace of life is such that we rarely have the luxury to stop and think. We take so much on trust or assume that we know why something happens or the way things work. It is only when we stop and think that nagging doubts or questions creep into our subconscious? For those of us blessed (or is it cursed?) with an enquiring mind, once the seed of a question has been planted, we need to find the answer. The purpose of this book is to shed light on some of those nagging and irritating questions. There is no overarching design behind the fifty questions. They are just some of the topics that have puzzled me, a self-confessed ignoramus on all matters scientific, over the years; and I have now had the time to find the answers. Fortunately, greater brains than mine have grappled with some of the issues and carried out bizarre experiments or made quantum leaps of logic to push out further the frontiers of human knowledge. This book celebrates this quest and thirst for knowledge.

Are you curious about where and to whom you belong? Could someone possibly love you forever, with a love that never changes? Do you long to know you’re accepted unconditionally, even if your inner secrets are known? Do you know a prodigal? If your answers to some or even one of those questions is “YES!” then this book may be the proverbial answer to your prayers. There are four biblical truths that—when applied to our lives—will forever change us. These truths are so simple we often struggle with their application. However, when we fully embrace them, they radically transform us and provide the answer to our deepest desire for acceptance. This book is intended for the prodigals in our lives as well as those already walking with God every day. Using Jesus’s timeless parable of the prodigal son, we’ll explore four things that God does not know. We’ll learn how those truths can answer questions that have gone unanswered for far too long.

Book excerpt: A man recounts his investigation into spirituality and into what he really believed about religion following the September 11th terrorist attacks. Suddenly, Brian Causey found himself stumbling over life’s greatest questions: Why are we here? How did the universe and life begin? Why is there suffering in the world? What happens after we die? If there is an afterlife, how do I get there? A portfolio manager at a large investment company, Brian would leave the trading floor each day with these questions swirling in his head. What he came to realize was that he had to make a decision: would he trade the god he had been following, under which he could make his own rules, without subscribing to any larger organization or authority?for the “real” God? The more he researched the difficult questions of life; the clearer God’s truth became. Brian ultimately concluded that the evidence points in the direction of God’s existence. In Trading Gods, he shares his personal journey, rationale for faith, and the supporting research that explains why the real God is the best answer to life’s biggest questions. “We all serve gods of one sort or another in our life. Brian’s story of being a trader who, after the tragedy of 9/11, found his way to the true God of Scripture, is both illuminating and inspiring.” —Justin Brierley, editor at Premier Christianity and host of the Unbelievable? radio show and podcast “For both Christian and non-Christian alike, I encourage you to take this journey with Brian. You won’t regret it!” —Nate Sala, president, A Clear Lens

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover how healthy buildings, culture, and people lead to high profits Organizations and employees now spend an average of $18,000 per year per employee for health costs, a 61% increase in 10 years. Book Lacan Reframed

  • Author : Steven Z. Levine
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2011-07-26

Download or read book Lacan Reframed written by Steven Z. Levine and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07-26 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are your students baffled by Baudrillard? Dazed by Deleuze? Confused by Kristeva? Other beginners' guides can feel as impenetrable as the original texts to students who 'think in images'. "Contemporary Thinkers Reframed" instead uses the language of the arts to explore the usefulness in practice of complex ideas. Short, contemporary and accessible, these lively books utilise actual examples of artworks, films, television shows, works of architecture, fashion and even computer games to explain and explore the work of the most commonly taught thinkers. Conceived specifically for the visually minded, the series will prove invaluable to students right across the visual arts. Single-handedly responsible for the influential and ominous notion of 'the gaze', quoted by everybody yet fully understood by few, Lacan's work can be difficult to grasp. Going back to basics, this introduction guides the reader through Lacan's key concepts by looking at art from the Mona Lisa through to Bridget Riley's paintings, and by looking afresh at key works discussed by Lacan himself, from Holbein's famous 'The Ambassadors' to Velazquez's 'Las Meninas'. Making sense of Lacan's sometimes convoluted style, this highly readable introduction to one of the most frequently quoted thinkers also explores the reasons why human beings make - and look at - art.

Book excerpt: Jesus is very candid about what He calls us to do, whether its prayer, love, confession, judgment, or even just to trust in Him. But often the last thing we do is the first thing He requires, which is to simply obey. Obey is a candid look at the way Jesus calls us to live through His words and commands. It is a reflection of one followers journey, beginning on a mission in poor, rural South Africa, to fully appreciate the power of obedience to Jesus. What he found was that Jesus never gave unclear, ambiguous instructions for lifeHe was very straightforward. While His commands are not always easy, they are life-changing for those who choose to listen, pray, and act on them. Obey provides a challenging, but inspirational, starting point to achieving the power of the obedient life.

Book What Were the Early Rabbis

Download or read book What Were the Early Rabbis written by Jack N. Lightstone and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-06-05 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the first eight centuries CE, the religious cultures of Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and many European lands transformed. Worship of "the gods" largely gave way to the worship of YHWH, the God of Israel, under Christianity and Islam, both developments of contemporary Judaism, after Rome destroyed Judaism's central shrine, the Jerusalem Temple, in 70 CE. But concomitant changes occurred within contemporary Judaism. The events of 70 wiped away well-established Judaic institutions in the Land of Israel, and over time the authority of a cadre of new "masters" of Judaic law, life, and practice, the "rabbis," took hold. What was the core, professional-like profile of members of this emerging cadre in the late second and early third centuries, when this group first attained a level of stable institutionalization (even if not yet well-established authority)? What views did they promote about the authoritative basis of their profile? What in their surrounding and antecedent sociocultural contexts lent prima facie legitimacy and currency to that profile? Geared to a nonspecialist readership, What Were the Early Rabbis? addresses these questions and consequently sheds light on eventual shifts in power that came to underpin Judaic communal life, while Christianity and Islam "Judaized" non-Jews under their expansive hegemonies.
