Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Western civilization founded by ancient Egyptians and Phoenicians? Can the ancient Egyptians usefully be called black? Did the ancient Greeks borrow religion, science, and philosophy from the Egyptians and Phoenicians? Have scholars ignored the Afroasiatic roots of Western civilization as a result of racism and anti-Semitism? In this collection of twenty essays, leading scholars in a broad range of disciplines confront the claims made by Martin Bernal in Black Athena: The Afroasiatic Roots of Classical Civilization. In that work, Bernal proposed a radical reinterpretation of the roots of classical civilization, contending that ancient Greek culture derived from Egypt and Phoenicia and that European scholars have been biased against the notion of Egyptian and Phoenician influence on Western civilization. The contributors to this volume argue that Bernal's claims are exaggerated and in many cases unjustified. Topics covered include race and physical anthropology; the question of an Egyptian invasion of Greece; the origins of Greek language, philosophy, and science; and racism and anti-Semitism in classical scholarship. In the conclusion to the volume, the editors propose an entirely new scholarly framework for understanding the relationship between the cultures of the ancient Near East and Greece and the origins of Western civilization. The contributors are: John Baines, professor of Egyptology, University of Oxford Kathryn A. Bard, assistant professor of archaeology, Boston University C. Loring Brace, professor of anthropology and curator of biological anthropology in the Museum of Anthropology, University of Michigan John E. Book Ancient Egyptian Calligraphy

Download or read book Ancient Egyptian Calligraphy written by Henry George Fischer and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1988 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The aim of this book is twofold: first, to provide beginning students with step-by-step guidance in drawing hieroglyphs; and secondly, to supplement the observations of Gardiner in the Sign List at the back of his Egyptian Grammar. The examples include all 24 of the common forms of "alphabetic" (monoconsonantal) signs, and a selection of other signs that are either difficult to draw or that call for additional comment - a total of about 200 in all. Comparative material, emphasizing Old Kingdom models, is presented in 175 line drawings. By familiarizing themselves with this material, along with the points made in the Introduction, students will, at the same time, learn a good deal about hieroglyphic palaeography"--Publisher's description.

Book Egypt and Western Asia in the Light of Recent Discoveries

Download or read book Egypt and Western Asia in the Light of Recent Discoveries written by L. W. King and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2006-02-01 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [T]he veil which has hidden the beginnings of Egyptian civilization from us has been lifted, and we see things, more or less, as they actually were, unobscured by the traditions of a later day. Until the last few years nothing of the real beginning of history in either Egypt or Mesopotamia had been found... Nor was it seriously supposed that any relics of prehistoric Egypt or Mesopotamia ever would be found. -from "Chapter I: The Discovery of Prehistoric Egypt" A very exciting time for historians, the beginning of the 20th century saw dramatic new discoveries that greatly expanded our understanding of the ancient world...and opened up new ranges of questions to be answered and mysteries to be solved. In 1910, two members of the Department of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum published this journal of the latest news from the realm of Egyptology, a breathless, almost ecstatic, but always scholarly rundown of the most recent findings uncovered in the deserts of yore, from startling archaeological revelations about the Neolithic peoples of Egypt to the unearthing of hitherto unknown dynastic tombs. A fascinating document of the history of the study of history, this beautiful book, replete with 100 plates and illustrations, will delight amateur Egyptologists and armchair archaeologists alike. Among many other works of classical history, H. R. HALL also wrote Babylonian and Assyrian Sculpture in the British Museum (1928), and L. W. KING, A History of Sumer and Akkad (1910).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's the cradle of civilization, the wellspring of three of the world's most powerful faiths, a place where vestiges of the ancient past remain vibrantly alive today—but what do we really know about the day-to-day lives and defining culture of the people of Israel and Canaan? Ancient Canaan and Israel takes readers beyond the scriptural portrayals of the region and into the everyday lives of Canaanites and Israelites. It draws on recently discovered archaeological evidence and fresh interpretations of biblical and extrabiblical texts to show how archaeologists and other researchers reconstruct the many facets of these civilizations—political, geographic, social, economic, religious, technological, and aesthetic. For experienced scholars or enthusiastic newcomers, it is an enlightening portrayal of the people and the land of Canaan and Israel, which traces many well-known spiritual and cultural traditions back to their ancient roots. It is also an objective introduction to a number of much-debated topics, such as the fate of the Canaanite cultures, the origins of the Israelites, and the historical accuracy of the Bible.
