Book University and School Collaborations During a Pandemic

Download or read book University and School Collaborations During a Pandemic written by Fernando M. Reimers and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on twenty case studies of universities worldwide, and on a survey administered to leaders in 101 universities, this open access book shows that, amidst the significant challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, universities found ways to engage with schools to support them in sustaining educational opportunity. In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as "ivory towers" being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach

Book Discontinuous Groups and Automorphic Functions

Download or read book Discontinuous Groups and Automorphic Functions written by Joseph Lehner and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1964-12-31 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written on the theory of discontinuous groups and automorphic functions since 1880, when the subject received its first formulation. The purpose of this book is to bring together in one place both the classical and modern aspects of the theory, and to present them clearly and in a modern language and notation. The emphasis in this book is on the fundamental parts of the subject. The book is directed to three classes of readers: graduate students approaching the subject for the first time, mature mathematicians who wish to gain some knowledge and understanding of automorphic function theory, and experts.

Book Boundaries

  • ISBN : 1589016858
  • Pages : 329 pages

Download or read book Boundaries written by Christine E. Gudorf and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this expanded and revised edition of a fresh and original case-study textbook on environmental ethics, Christine Gudorf and James Huchingson continue to explore the line that separates the current state of the environment from what it should be in the future. Boundaries begins with a lucid overview of the field, highlighting the key developments and theories in the environmental movement. Specific cases offer a rich and diverse range of situations from around the globe, from saving the forests of Java and the use of pesticides in developing countries to restoring degraded ecosystems in Nebraska. With an emphasis on the concrete circumstances of particular localities, the studies continue to focus on the dilemmas and struggles of individuals and communities who face daunting decisions with serious consequences. This second edition features extensive updates and revisions, along with four new cases: one on water privatization, one on governmental efforts to mitigate global climate change, and two on the obstacles that teachers of environmental ethics encounter in the classroom. Boundaries also includes an appendix for teachers that describes how to use the cases in the classroom.

Book Birational Geometry of Algebraic Varieties

Download or read book Birational Geometry of Algebraic Varieties written by Janos Kollár and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major discoveries of the past two decades in algebraic geometry is the realization that the theory of minimal models of surfaces can be generalized to higher dimensional varieties. This generalization, called the minimal model program, or Mori's program, has developed into a powerful tool with applications to diverse questions in algebraic geometry and beyond. This book provides the first comprehensive introduction to the circle of ideas developed around the program, the prerequisites being only a basic knowledge of algebraic geometry. It will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers working in algebraic geometry and related fields.

Book Lectures on Invariant Subspaces

Download or read book Lectures on Invariant Subspaces written by Henry Helson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lectures on Invariant Subspaces grew out of a series of lectures given gave at the University of Uppsala in the spring of 1962, and again in Berkeley the following semester. Since the subject is rather loosely defined the lecture style seemed appropriate also for this written version. The book is written for a graduate student who knows a little, but not necessarily very much, about analytic functions and about Hilbert space. The book contains 11 lectures and begins with a discussion of analytic functions. This is followed by lectures covering invariant subspaces, individual theorems, invariant subspaces in Lp, invariant subspaces in the line, and analytic vector functions. Subsequent lectures cover vectorial function theory, inner functions, range functions, and factoring of operator functions.

Book Percolation Theory for Mathematicians

Download or read book Percolation Theory for Mathematicians written by Kesten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quite apart from the fact that percolation theory had its orlgln in an honest applied problem (see Hammersley and Welsh (1980)), it is a source of fascinating problems of the best kind a mathematician can wish for: problems which are easy to state with a minimum of preparation, but whose solutions are (apparently) difficult and require new methods. At the same time many of the problems are of interest to or proposed by statistical physicists and not dreamt up merely to demons~te ingenuity. Progress in the field has been slow. Relatively few results have been established rigorously, despite the rapidly growing literature with variations and extensions of the basic model, conjectures, plausibility arguments and results of simulations. It is my aim to treat here some basic results with rigorous proofs. This is in the first place a research monograph, but there are few prerequisites; one term of any standard graduate course in probability should be more than enough. Much of the material is quite recent or new, and many of the proofs are still clumsy. Especially the attempt to give proofs valid for as many graphs as possible led to more complications than expected. I hope that the Applications and Examples provide justifi cation for going to this level of generality.

  • Author : Roberto Quesada
  • Publisher : Arte Publico Press
  • Release : 1999-03-31
  • ISBN : 9781611920697

Download or read book The Big Banana written by Roberto Quesada and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 1999-03-31 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his seductively entertaining new novel, The Big Banana, Roberto Quesada invokes the magic of great Latin American fiction as he follows the struggles of an ensemble cast of endearingly eccentric characters chasing their dreams in New York City. Meet Eduardo, the Honduran screen-star-wannabe; his great love, Miriam whose obsession with Bond „ James Bond (the one played by Roger Moore, quite specifically) „ leads to a purely un-accidental international encounter; and a host of zany Central and South American acquaintances „ especially the Chilean Casagrande, the fun-loving, magnanimous, professionally unemployed mystic-philosopher-musician-singer who brings them all together. Against the backdrop of their hardscrabble everyday lives, Quesada wields a bold brush to paint in broad strokes a festive mural awash in the vivid colors of the outlandish fantasies that drive Eduardo and his friends. Ultimately, the elusive prize of friendship and laughter dwarf the seemingly larger goals of money and success.
