Book excerpt: This book tells the stories of the Greek Gods and Goddesses from their own unique points of view, allowing their archetypal energies to manifest from within the cultural unconscious of our modern world. These are not stories for children, although told in poetic form. They are intended for an mature audience, who choose to better understand where they've come from and where they are going in this modern world. Western culture is largely based on Greco-Roman archetypes, and these myths speak directly to behaviors that manifest in our modern world. This book is intended for ages 16+.

Book Myth and the Making of Modernity

Download or read book Myth and the Making of Modernity written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this collection of essays on the literary use of myth in the early twentieth century and its literary and philosophical precedents from romanticism onwards draw on a range of disciplines, from anthropology, comparative literature, and literary criticism, to philosophy and religious studies. The underlying assumption is that modernist myth-making does not retreat from modernity, but projects a mode of being for the future which the past could serve to define. Modernist myth is not an attempted recovery of an archaic form of life so much as a sophisticated self-conscious equivalent. Far from seeking a return to an earlier romantic valorizing of myth, these essays show how the true interest of early twentieth-century myth-making lies in the consciousness, affirmative as well as tragic, of living in a human world which, in so far as it must embody value, can have no ultimate grounding. Although myth may initially appear to be the archaic counterterm to modernity, it is thus also the paradigm on which modernity has repeatedly reconstructed, or come to understand, its own life forms. The very term myth, by combining, in its modern usage, the rival meanings of a grounding narrative and a falsehood, encapsulates a central problem of modernity: how to live, given what we know.

Book The Mythic Voice of Statius

Download or read book The Mythic Voice of Statius written by William J. Dominik and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1994-10-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first thematic study of Statius' Thebaid to be published in monograph form in English in the past twenty years. It examines in detail the thematic design and intent of the Thebaid and considers the question of its contemporary relevance. The book focuses on the central theme of power — how it is exercised on the supernatural and human levels and the consequences of its pursuit and abuse in terms of the human condition. An ensuing discussion explores the political undercurrents of the epic. This discussion is in four main parts: (1) 'Use and Abuse of Supernatural Power'; (2) 'Pursuit and Abuse of Monarchal Power'; (3) 'Consequences of the Abuse of Power'; and (4) 'Political Relevance to Contemporary Rome'. The views expressed represent a fundamental departure from previous studies and constitute a critical reassessment of the Thebaid. The provision of translations makes the book accessible to the Latinless reader.

Book Gothic Voices

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matt Foley
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2023-02-28
  • ISBN : 1009194550
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Gothic Voices written by Matt Foley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element provides new ways of reading the soundscape of the Gothic text. Drawing inspiration from the field of 'sonic Gothic' studies, which has been spearheaded by the writings of Isabella van Elferen, as well as from Mladen Dolar's articulation of the psychoanalytic 'object' voice, this study introduces the critical category of 'vococentric Gothic' into Gothic scholarship. In so doing, it reads important moments in Gothic fiction when the voice takes precedence as an uncanny, monstrous or seductive object. Historically informed, the range of readings proffered demonstrate the persistence of these vocal motifs across time (from the Gothic romance to contemporary Gothic) and across intermedia forms (from literature to film to podcasts). Gothic Voices, then, provides the first dedicated account of voices of terror and horror as they develop in the Gothic mode from the Romantic period until today.

Book The Bible s Many Voices

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Carasik
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2014-04-01
  • ISBN : 0827609353

Download or read book The Bible s Many Voices written by Michael Carasik and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most common English translations of the Bible often sound like a single, somewhat archaic voice. In fact, the Bible is made up of many separate books composed by multiple writers in a wide range of styles and perspectives. It is, as Michael Carasik demonstrates, not a remote text reserved for churches and synagogues but rather a human document full of history, poetry, politics, theology, and spirituality. Using historic, linguistic, anthropological, and theological sources, Carasik helps us distinguish between the Jewish Bible’s voices—the mythic, the historical, the prophetic, the theological, and the legal. By articulating the differences among these voices, he shows us not just their messages and meanings but also what mattered to the authors. In these contrasts we encounter the Bible anew as a living work whose many voices tell us about the world out of which the Bible grew—and the world that it created. Listen to the author's podcast.

Book Wake Siren

Download or read book Wake Siren written by Nina MacLaughlin and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fierce, textured voices, the women of Ovid's Metamorphoses claim their stories and challenge the power of myth I am the home of this story. After thousands of years of other people’s tellings, of all these different bridges, of words gotten wrong, I’ll tell it myself. Seductresses and she-monsters, nymphs and demi-goddesses, populate the famous myths of Ovid's Metamorphoses. But what happens when the story of the chase comes in the voice of the woman fleeing her rape? When the beloved coolly returns the seducer's gaze? When tales of monstrous transfiguration are sung by those transformed? In voices both mythic and modern, Wake, Siren revisits each account of love, loss, rape, revenge, and change. It lays bare the violence that undergirds and lurks in the heart of Ovid’s narratives, stories that helped build and perpetuate the distorted portrayal of women across centuries of art and literature. Drawing on the rhythms of epic poetry and alt rock, of everyday speech and folk song, of fireside whisperings and therapy sessions, Nina MacLaughlin, the acclaimed author of Hammer Head, recovers what is lost when the stories of women are told and translated by men. She breathes new life into these fraught and well-loved myths.
