Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterpiece of Arabic love poetry in a new and complete English translation The Translator of Desires, a collection of sixty-one love poems, is the lyric masterwork of Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi (1165–1240 CE), one of the most influential writers of classical Arabic and Islamic civilization. In this authoritative volume, Michael Sells presents the first complete English translation of this work in more than a century, complete with an introduction, commentary, and a new facing-page critical text of the original Arabic. While grounded in an expert command of the Arabic, this verse translation renders the poems into a natural, contemporary English that captures the stunning beauty and power of Ibn ‘Arabi’s poems in such lines as “A veiled gazelle’s / an amazing sight, / her henna hinting, / eyelids signalling // A pasture between / breastbone and spine / Marvel, a garden / among the flames!” The introduction puts the poems in the context of the Arabic love poetry tradition, Ibn ‘Arabi’s life and times, his mystical thought, and his “romance” with Niẓām, the young woman whom he presents as the inspiration for the volume—a relationship that has long fascinated readers. Other features, following the main text, include detailed notes and commentaries on each poem, translations of Ibn ‘Arabi’s important prefaces to the poems, a discussion of the sources used for the Arabic text, and a glossary. Bringing The Translator of Desires to life for contemporary English readers as never before, this promises to be the definitive volume of these fascinating and compelling poems for years to come.

Book excerpt: Poetry. Middle Eastern Studies. Translated from the Arabic by Michael Sells. BEWILDERED contains new translations of Ibn al-'Arab? Tarjuman poems in modern poetic English. The translator of a highly praised volume of pre-Islamic qasidas, Desert Tracings, and STATIONS OF DESIRE, the first renderings of Ibn al-'Arab? Tarjuman, Michael A. Sells carries into his translations the supple, resonant quality of the original Arabic, so that the poems come to life in English. Expert yet unaffected, [Michael Sell's translations in BEWLIDERED] capture the original Arabic even as they introduce a figure as eminent as Rumi who is little-known in the West. Furthermore, by revisiting past translations, Sells's work confirms that literature is best rendered not in a single English version, but many.--Kevin Blankinship

Book Mystics

  • Author : William Harmless
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2007-12-19
  • ISBN : 9780198041108
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Mystics written by William Harmless and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-19 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mystics are path-breaking religious practitioners who claim to have experience the infinite, word-defying Mystery that is God. Many have been gifted writers with an uncanny ability to communicate the great realities of life with both a theologian's precision and a poet's lyricism. They use words to jolt us into recognizing ineffable mysteries surging beneath the surface of our lives and within the depths of our hearts and, by their artistry, can awaken us to see and savor fugitive glimpses of a God-drenched world. In Mystics, William Harmless, S.J., introduces readers to the scholarly study of mysticism. He explores both mystics' extraordinary lives and their no-less-extraordinary writings using a unique case-study method centered on detailed examinations of six major Christian mystics: Thomas Merton, Bernard of Clairvaux, Hildegard of Bingen, Bonaventure, Meister Eckhart, and Evagrius Ponticus. Rather than presenting mysticism as a subtle web of psychological or theological abstractions, Harmless's case-study approach brings things down to earth, restoring mystics to their historical context. Harmless highlights the pungent diversity of mystical experiences and mystical theologies. Stepping beyond Christianity, he also explores mystical elements within Islam and Buddhism, offering a chapter on the popular Sufi poet Rumi and one on the famous Japanese Zen master Dogen. Harmless concludes with an overview of the century-long scholarly conversation on mysticism and offers a unique, multifaceted optic for understanding mystics, their communities, and their writings. Geared toward a wide audience, Mystics balances state-of-the-art scholarship with accessible, lucid prose.

Book Aldous Huxley from Poet to Mystic

Download or read book Aldous Huxley from Poet to Mystic written by Jerome Meckier and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aldous Huxley began as a poet. He perfected the voice of the modern satirical poet of ideas, who used art against itself to produce a parodic poetry of breakdowns, collapses, stalemates, and dead ends best suited to the apparent pointlessness of the post-war era. His cleverest, most irreverent poems are contrapuntal: they, in effect, silence venerable poets and cancel traditional formats. Huxley's poetic personas either fail to preserve conventional forms or purposely sabotage them. By 1920, Huxley became the parodic equivalent of the formative intelligences (i.e., Dante, Goethe, and Lucretius) who once synthesized their respective eras positively. In this book, author Jerome Meckier explicates most of Huxley's poems, including Leda, his masterpiece, an ironical modern myth. Meckier traces Huxley's development in terms of the poets he inserted in five of his eleven novels, along with their poems. These poets mostly fail as poets, their different stances falling apart one after another. But Huxley began to detect a spiritual significance underlying the creative urge. This allowed him to rehabilitate many of the Romantic and Victorian poets he formerly ridiculed as frauds and liars. Eventually, he celebrated mystical contemplation as silent poetry, positing a utopia in which everyone is a poet to the limits of his or her potentiality. Huxley became the perennial philosopher, a neo-Brahmin: the sage-like figure he initially personified parodically. His paradigmatic career took him from a Pyrrhonic silencing of outmoded poems and poets to the advocacy of a poetry of silence. (Series: "Human Potentialities". Book Selected Heart Poems

    Book Details:
  • Author : Zoe Williamson

  • ISBN : 1466963689
  • Pages : 91 pages

Download or read book Selected Heart Poems written by Zoe Williamson and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected Heart Poems accompanies Love Chronicles (my first poetry collection) as a selection of poems about love, spirituality, and journeys. The verse that has been collected here communicates more experiences of romance and the web of emotions that stem from complex feelings for another person. It also explores how we feel love for our children and our unconditional bond with them. On a spiritual level, there is a relationship between the self and the recognition that our lives are constantly changing yet finding reassurance that we can come to terms with this through understanding several Buddhist concepts. The key, perhaps most profoundly, is that of the connection between our happiness and the happiness of everyone else. There are collected poems that are connected with past travels across Europe and the Middle East and throughout my time in South America. The attempt here is to paint a vast canvas with my encounters of cultures and people, their customs and beliefs, backdrops to unbelievable meteorology and breathtaking scenery. With this in mind, it is possible to recall the excitement of the past and still move forward with extended belief and profound faith. Simplified, my poems are illustrations of my perceptions toward the world according to my personal experiences of love. This includes my fondness of travel, my interest in people, my love of the arts and also the magic language of dreams and how they interpret into daily life. Primarily, my love poems are passionate and filled with intrigue and sensuality; they themselves narrate stories rich in romance and emotions connected with the heart.
