Book The Invisible Influence

Download or read book The Invisible Influence written by Alexander Cannon and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black magic. Telepathy. The Universal Mind. Such wonders are real, insists spiritualist Alexander Cannon in this 1933 tome, all manifestations of the invisible influence all around us. Subtitled "a story of the mystic Orient with great truths which can never die," this florid and enthusiastic narrative, structured as a conversation between Cannon and a series of mystics, yogis, and other sages, offers anecdotes of crystal gazing, levitation, hypnotism, distant-touching, and other weird phenomena as evidence of this "invisible influence." A breathless document of the fascination with the occult that gripped the early years of the 20th century, these tales of the paranormal continue to beguile today. British physician and psychiatrist ALEXANDER CANNON (b. 1896) also wrote Sleeping Through Space, The Shadow of Destiny, Science of Hypnotism, and Powers That Be.

Download or read book The Mystic Ark written by Conrad Rudolph and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-09 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Conrad Rudolph studies and reconstructs Hugh of Saint Victor's forty-two-page written work, The Mystic Ark, which describes the medieval painting of the same name. In medieval written sources, works of art are not often referred to, let alone described in any detail. Almost completely ignored by art historians because of the immense difficulty of its text, Hugh of Saint Victor's Mystic Ark (c.1125–30) is among the most unusual sources we have for an understanding of medieval artistic culture. Depicting all time, all space, all matter, all human history and all spiritual striving, this highly polemical painting deals with a series of cultural issues crucial in the education of society's elite during one of the great periods of intellectual change in Western history.

Book excerpt: A simple act of kindness brings two unlikely friends together in this profound picture book about the transformative power of friendship. A bear sits in his quiet, colorless home in a forgotten place. He feels invisible; no one comes to see him, and he spends his days alone. Then someone moves in next door. Madame Odette is sound and sunshine, and at first, the bear isn't sure about this colorful new neighbor. But through an act of kindness, the bear and the Madame Odette meet, and as time goes by, they become friends. And in the end, they are both forever changed by the gifts they bring each other. The first book from author-illustrator Cécile Metzger, The Invisible Bear is a powerful and beautiful meditation on the beauty of friendship and how two people can save each other just by being themselves.

Book Through a Speculum That Shines

Download or read book Through a Speculum That Shines written by Elliot R. Wolfson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive treatment of visionary experience in some of the main texts of Jewish mysticism, this book reveals the overwhelmingly visual nature of religious experience in Jewish spirituality from antiquity through the late Middle Ages. Using phenomenological and critical historical tools, Wolfson examines Jewish mystical texts from late antiquity, pre-kabbalistic sources from the tenth to the twelfth centuries, and twelfth- and thirteenth-century kabbalistic literature. His work demonstrates that the sense of sight assumes an epistemic priority in these writings, reflecting and building upon those scriptural passages that affirm the visual nature of revelatory experience. Moreover, the author reveals an androcentric eroticism in the scopic mentality of Jewish mystics, which placed the externalized and representable form, the phallus, at the center of the visual encounter. In the visionary experience, as Wolfson describes it, imagination serves a primary function, transmuting sensory data and rational concepts into symbols of those things beyond sense and reason. In this view, the experience of a vision is inseparable from the process of interpretation. Fundamentally challenging the conventional distinction between experience and exegesis, revelation and interpretation, Wolfson argues that for the mystics themselves, the study of texts occasioned a visual experience of the divine located in the imagination of the mystical interpreter. Thus he shows how Jewish mystics preserved the invisible transcendence of God without doing away with the visual dimension of belief.

Book Revival Primitive Mentality 1923

Download or read book Revival Primitive Mentality 1923 written by Lucien Levy-Bruhl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primitive mind does not differentiate the supernatural from reality, but rather uses "mystical participation" to manipulate the world. According to Bruhl, moreover, the primitive mind doesn't address contradictions. The modern mind, by contrast, uses reflection and logic. Bruhl believed in a historical and evolutionary teleology leading from the primitive mind to the modern mind.

They acquire permission to board and retrieve supplies for the trip back home, but upon entry, no one is there to greet them. Their quest takes them further into the station’s labyrinth-like depths, and what started as a search for supplies becomes a battle of survival as the crew discovers the hidden mysteries that are buried within the recesses of the station. Living Ink: Ascension is a psychological thriller that will take its readers to the edge of reality and beyond. Appeals to fans of The Matrix, Inception, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
